Counter-steering: How it works and why it is the essential backcountry riding skill

Counter-steering is as natural as breathing for experienced backcountry snowmobilers, but most new riders struggle with it. There are already lots of excellent *how* to counter-steer videos, so here’s an explanation of *why* counter-steering makes your sled turn and sidehill. 👍 nice from the other side of the world … planning one more ride for the year - was a crappy winter conditions wise
What's the approx elevation you live at. Looks pretty special as always around ur place
800M at the house, up to 1150. Other nearby zones peak a couple of hundred meters higher.
Shot after we left?
Yes. You left, the snow came back, one month of paradise.
Were you guys able to get your hands on the 858.???
No, only the 600, which was a good ride. Unfortunately 858 prices are completely insane in Japan-exchange rate has killed it, and the way the Cat business is structured here has made them cost more than even a turbo Doo. Equivalent of a full year’s salary for most of the guys who would be buying one. Ain’t gonna happen.
@@AkatarawaJapan man. That’s really too bad. We rode them this weekend. They feel pretty good. It’s tough not to buy but I’ve been waiting way too long to pass it up.

Great to see you out with a video Akatarawa! This one didn't appear to be one of your April Fools videos though. ;-)
Nothing but facts around here, any month of the year.

great to see some snowmobiling
Happy to see you in action!!!
Everything hurts but nothing is broken-I’ll take it.
Thanks for the video, the BRP instruction webpage did not have the install instruction (even it said in the added paper info in the box i could download it) so thanks to this video i got more sure on what places to mount the toe-hold´s. i have made one ride with them now. and so far i have only been able to "lay it down" as you do then we had more snow this winter. that was without the toe-holders and i was putting my toes under the plastic hood without thinking. Anyhow i need to wressel my Lynx Xterrain from 2020 a bit more to be able to replicate what i see in this video 😄 i will be right back, need to test and train now! seee you later!
Cheers. Hope you found some snow.
I booked my flight. See you in a few days. Oh, I'm shipping my fleet (2) to you. Expect them sometime in May. Right when the season starts up. Cheers.
May could be tricky for snow, but send the fleet anyway and I will look after them for you.
the throttle blipping is very "Asian" if you seen the bikes with super long exhaustion pipes. they sound super silly. like a "legendary snowmobile blipping" 🤣
hahaha that ex video with the boy´s blipping away, lols that was isane. but i know i blipp cuz i feel my throttle is often hart to have the speed i want with steady throttle pos. but i am pretty sure i can get rid of the blipping. (this is my 4th winter on a sled so i am a novice.) both on my old sled (Arctic Cat 2001 ) and my new for this winter Lynz XTerrain 2020 i alway felt the throttle to be a bit "agressive" on the low end. but i am pretty sure i just need to get used to the throttle character.
i am a "old" bikerider, counter steering is natural on my Yamaha R6 or my Husaberg FS650. but i never thought riding a snowmobile was SO similar to ride a bike, not entierly. i did see it another video. and i do see on the extreme snowmobile riders it looks very alike a bike rider. so i tride my self now that we had much much more snow and had deep powder snow in Sweden. And yes it was mindblowing. i applied some of my bike thinking and skill. and the sled where just going there i looked without thinking. I am still very novies as a sled rider. and i have to practise more and my throttle control needs to be improved. but what i can say is sense the day i understood it was very similar as bikeriding many things become easer and more flow in my riding. to add some context, i did ride for 3 years a Arctic Cat zr 440 with a 600cc EFI engien. low, flat wide toad. but this winter i upgraded to a Lynx Xterrain 600R and that is much narrower and taller. and you sit in a very different posision compare to my 20 year old Arctic Cat. so the Lynx is more suited for "bike like" riding. Counter steering on my Yamaha R6 makes the bike "fall in to" the corner i am turning in.
This is actually such a good and accurate review! Very impresssive
Thanks Mate. They are both great sleds.
What do you got for snow up there?
Not much so far. We’re riding but it has mainly fallen north or south of us.
@@AkatarawaJapan ya pretty much the same here in east central Minnesota, we’re one of the snowiest states in the country and we had 3” now it’s all gone, states south and east of us got tons, just kind of a weird winter
I'm hesitating between a gen 4 summit 850, 2018 mountain cat and an axys rmk 800. I want a snowmobile that is maneuverable, easy ot ride and reliable. On the Polaris I am undecided about the reliability, on the cat the same thing and on the ski doo the maneuverability. I would like to hear your opinion about that. Thank you and very good comparison video
Ideally you would find a way to try each of them and see which suits you best. If the Cat has got an Alpha rail it is super easy to get on one ski and unbeatable in powder. I rode a Gen 4 for a couple of seasons. Stonking engine but the bump steer got to me in the end. Have only been on an Axys twice so don’t know much about them. Reliability-who knows.
@@AkatarawaJapan Thank you for your answer and as you say I will try them to see which one best suits my needs.
What’s your name?
FU TNY!
We are also having a fantastic snowmobiling season here in Wellington. January is definitely our busy month. Just a question re your marketing - if you remove all the vowels to get your name how come the name is egggggfrrrrrr. Isn’t E a vowel? Perhaps it isn’t in Japan? If you’re interested in a joint venture we should talk. I have loads of clients that would like to tour with you. If you have any spare bookings once the Nigerians have gone - sing out.
I’ve heard that Wellington is up there with Okinawa in terms of riding terrain-great to hear you are having a strong season. You make a good point about the potential website name. E is still a vowel in most prefectures of Japan but its pronunciation is closer to our Q so I tend to give it honorary consonant status. Also, I really like eggs and frankfurters. FCK Y TNY!
Here in northern Sweden we have -40 CELSIUS and over a meter of snow already. Its gonna be an unusually long season I think. That being said, snowmobiling in Japan always look amazing, what month is that footage taken? Looks like May?
Jaysus that’s two tee-shirt weather. Peak season here is mid-January to mid-February but for the Good Guide Guys Guides the concept of having a peak season is still mainly aspirational.

Your application sounds very promising. Do you speak any other languages? Nigerian would be helpful. Also any experience with angry mothers?
Hi Akatarawa, great to see you post a video! And as always, they're fun to watch and laugh at. As of the moment it is snowing in NE Oregon USA with just short of a foot on the ground in town and three feet in the mountains (not a lot for this time of year unfortunately).
Ahh......his Ryoal High ness emailed me to become a part of that trip. I sent him my down payment and been waiting for my flight tickets. Should be arriving any time now. Can't wait to snowmobe in Jaapaan.
He is a very trustworthy guy and frankly a good friend to me. But he is a bit slow replying to emails. I know he is getting everything ready though because the bank transfers have gone very smoothly and he did get back to request an additional payment to cover bank fees which are apparently quite punishing at his end, so I helped him out with that. See you here soon!

@@AkatarawaJapan What does it cost to bring a sled over there?!
You actually can’t ride a bike, motored or not, without counter steering. It’s caused by gyroscopic precession.

I've been riding Cats of all sizes forever, my last was m8000 limited .This year I thought I have to try a Polaris before I get to old so I thought I"ll try used first, found a 2019 pro rmk 800 with 700 miles. Been out on it 3 times so far and have to say it feels like the best sled I've ever had , I am worried about the engine problems we all hear about but I'll find out I guess . I am certainly not knocking Cats but I'm very happy so far, great reviews by the way keep it up.
Thanks. I am getting to really like the Khaos too, but I still find the Alpha suits me better in tight trees. Just so easy to roll over in neutral. Not surprised your Poo feels much better than the M8. All the Cat mountain sleds have been a trail sled makeover compromise… until now. Should be able to try a Catalyst 600 soon.
Many thanks for this inspirational video about following your passion to its logical conclusion. I have taken the liberty of using this on my famous 'Be the best version of you by paying me to be the best version of me telling you how to be you' course. This is the first course in my 'Climbing Mount You' series in which I use inspritaitonal footage from the real world of outdoor pursuits as an inspiration to inspire people who see themselves as themselves to see themselves as me, but by using other people's ideas and creativity. I quit my guiding job in the country to bring my country wisdom to the city where people are souless, robotic, over-stimulated and inauthentic. Sure, I have to live on the street, but with modern tools like an internet computer in a public library and a food bank you don't need a lot of money to deliver transformational insight by following your dream. Join me in Ueno park. I have photocopy leaflets and a loud voice. You could be part of my outreach team and embrace the 'Mount You Lifestyle Warriors' lifestyle -- it's authentic and real!
I am very interested in your Climbing Mount You course, and would be prepared to attend it for a nominal fee of, say, three thousand pounds. Once I receive your payment I will inform you of the other conditions for my participation.
That is great news! I understand you well! I look forward to receiving three thousand pound in yen equivalent in cash, then you can begin learning with me. @@AkatarawaJapan

So sad to hear this. Condolences to you and the family. My best friend and first dog I've ever owned is an Aussie and just turned 13, so we just make sure we enjoy every day with him and give him lots of extra treats these days.
First of all, love the videos. I just moved to Japan (Nagasaki prefecture), and previously had my motorcycle license in the US. I was wondering how I can get starting e-biking on a surron/talaria/e-bike pro, and if I need a license. I was considering buying a motorcycle, but I’ll only be here for 3 years, and I know that shipping motorcycles can get tricky. Do you think it would be a better investment to get an e-motorcycle? Sorry to ask so many questions haha
Cheers, and welcome to Japan. No license required for off-road. Can’t advise you what to do but I can promise you it is hard to have more fun than a Surron on forest single track.
@@AkatarawaJapan I'm waiting for Yamaha to respond to the Talaria Sting/SurRon. However, I understand Japan is more interested in hydrogen power for its economy?
