Live Stunt Shows: Disneyland vs Universal Studios
A recent (and rare for me) family vacation to CA got me thinking about what makes for a good stunt show, and some of the roles they play within our stunt and stage combat ecosystem. Let's look at Disneylands's Marvel Campus vs. Universal's Waterworld shows and see what we find!

Polishing and maintaining Aluminum props
zhlédnutí 23Před 21 hodinou
Super simple, but it makes a difference! Aluminum is a great option for both stage and screen props, as a stand-in for steel, but it can get a bit... dull. It also burrs up, although it tends to mash rather than form chips or splinters or sharper burrs like steel, and because it's softer it also just files out quickly. But those finishing touches? Let's take a moment to look at those! Products ...

Time for another Prop Talk video, and this one actually isn't about props.... it's about other tools of the trade. Been seeing glimpses of these online, and just had to give it a try.

How wide is the blade of the Honshu broadsword at its widest point?

Can this video get any gayer
I mean... it's pride month now. Is that a challenge?
Great stuff 😊
Ordered the HF Armory HEMA Bag for my son for Xmas. It too came wrapped in plastic wrap.
The swords were used by inexperienced fencers. No fighting manuals from the medieval to renaissance periods show edge on edge parrying. Accidents in real life or death situations are bound to happen though. Deliberately destroying your expensive and sharp sword is madness. You have to turn your sword deliberately to hit your cutting edge against your opponents which takes longer than parrying with the flat and striking. People watch too many films and do not enough research. John Clements manuals are an excellent and informative read.
These were used for stage combat, not fencing (they aren't foiled blunts for fencing anyway), and in stage combat edge parries are standard. I only use the flat when I want a deflection instead of an actual parry. I was also part of the group back in the 90s when Clements was first picking fights with the rest of the HEMA community, about edge parries and many other things, and for many many reasons I've chosen to believe the vast majority of other reliable sources over Mr. Clements (who banned me from the HACA site for daring to ask him a follow-up question about a statement of his). Here's a good summary of arguments should you want to do more research yourself, but there's plenty more out there: hroarr.com/article/about-the-flat-parry
czcams.com/video/i6JZvgh3DGc/video.htmlsi=w022kuVGrFmRrCYq is another good one.
@@fightdesigner Thank you for replying and the information that you sent me and it was very interesting and informative. Do you think that a 45 degree angle would both protect the hands and the cutting edge?
@@petesouthwales867 maybe, but that’s not always what’s wanted. Check out some of the interesting stuff Dimicator has done with fencing with sharps, or that others have done using rough textured trainers to approximate the bite… I think at times the edge use was completely deliberate. Especially on the forte, which is rarely involved in cutting anyway, so there’s no need for it to have a thin edge grind there.

I was considering the Honshu and I found the extra information I needed to decide to buy it, thanks.
How's the comfort with a finger over the cross? Two? Also, how's it holding up almost two years later?
I thought it was fine, but I don't do the two finger grip. Sadly it hasn't gotten much use since so far!
@@fightdesigner What type of use has it gotten, even if it hasn't gotten much?
Just me playing around. That 3M production went with a different model, and I moved right before the next such production happened that would have used it. I guess the next test sadly is rust resistance, as I slowly unpack things post-move, and see how well the oil protected the finish from surface rust. I'll use it and some others for a workshop in October, at least.@@matthewpham9525
What do you have to do in order to film with a gun that has a orange tip that has been painted over? I don't want to get the cops called on me because people believe that I am using a real firearm.
I cover this in both The Theatrical Firearms Handbook and The Screen Combat Handbook, but basically any time you can be seen or heard by folks not working on your production, you need to alert the authorities (and there are often overlapping jurisdictions), alert locals and post signage, and quite possibly get permits, which can involve being required to hire police to be on set that day.

Went to box up that old one having sold it... and the old CPVC broke! Had to re-do the PVC and some other parts that night so I could still send it out as promised... but that's life!
How do the weights of the 3 poly. swords compare?
I don't have a good postage scale or anything like that, but the Cold Steel was the heaviest definitely. Their website says 31.7oz. According to Amazon, the package shipping weight for the Honshu is about 25.7oz. Museum Replicas says the other one is about 11.4oz. I'm not sure I believe all those are accurate, but since mine are cut down and packed up right now, I can't really check.
It’ll take some time and multiple attempts but you can definitely straighten polypropylene swords. Try it

So is the red dragon training sword not worth it ? I was researching it before I stumbled across this video i am deciding between the Honshu and the red dragon
Depends on what you're looking for. It's lighter and more flexible, which makes it a much better option for sparring - that's really what it's designed for. But it's slick, which I'm not a fan of, and it readily takes a bend, and for solo practice I just didn't like the feel as much. But I wouldn't want to spar with the Honshu, unless you have great rigid armor for the whole body.
@@fightdesigner thank you I was looking for something to do beginner sparing with , this information will be helpful!
Hi there, how does the Retay mod 92 handle firing? Does it have any problems 1 should look out for?
Not sure - don't have the Retay 92.
Where did you get that shield?
Honestly, I think that one was eBay...
Would love a good source for lighter weight hide-style shields (and I don't really care about historical accuracy of construction, so polypropylene or something is fine)... let me know if you find one! And sorry, PewTube is my alternate account for theatrical and film firearms-specific content.
How did you take the retay xr orange tip I been twisting for hours and nothing it won’t evwn budge
I don't remember about that one in particular, but often I have to use vice grips or a clamp on the tip. Some of them have a sleeve that will just turn, over the threaded inner tip, so to actually unscrew it you need to mush down the outer metal layer until you get down to the inner layer. -Kevin/Fightdesigner
I have Bruni 1911 front fire and I have the same problems I'll never buy one again I bought it because it's a good replica and it's a classic. I have to retay XR and I have to paint the slide black to cover up all the white crap it says retail
Yeah, I kinda wish Retay or Zoraki made a decent 1911 (maybe even a modern railed one!) because the Bruni and Kimar just aren't very good...
Why can't we get umarex Glock Walter and so forth. It's only retail Bruni and they're guns are soft metal. All the umarex Europe or Italy. How can we get our hands on the Glock Walter and so on
Yeah, Umarex USA decided to stop importing blank guns back around 2016/2017 or something, and most other companies won't ship to the US. It's sad. Zoraki and Retay are okay, but Umarex is good quality, trademarks, and the revolvers work with crimp blanks.... I really wish we still had that option!

They aren't legally firearms... but that might not mean a felon wouldn't be charged with firearm offenses if they used one in a confrontation. nice! did you replace the blade also? doesn't seem to have the musketeer blade anymore. Also, how did you give shape to the quillions? I'm about to get the duelist rapier. The cup is matte finish steel?
I actually requested a shlager style blade, and they were open to small customizations like that. Yes, cup and other fittings were matte steel, sort of a sand-blasted finish. The quillions had that twist in the one I originally ordered through Etsy, but then when they first sent me a picture before shipping (a nice thing to do) it didn't have those, so I asked for the twisted ones to match the style I'd ordered, and after a couple weeks they were able to make that change.
Seeing it in slow motion, maybe I should have put those mesh vents in the side like I'd originally planned... might make it balloon/flop up into frame less on set. Hm...

Are they fireproof
Polypropylene is a plastic, so no. Probably melts at about 340F/171C according to a quick Google search, and melting synthetics are not something you want in close proximity to humans (that was one of the first lessons when I did burn stunts). If you want swords for a fire-spinning act or something like that, there are a few vendors who make blades specifically for that, often metal with a way to thread a wick-like rope along it.

Excellent video! How do these Hanwei swords compare to Rogue Steel? Have they held up well over the years of use?
A bit of an unfair comparison... Hanwei mass produces and isn't specializing in any one market, and has a wide range of lines. Rogue Steel really specializes in stage combat, and is a smaller business more personally overseen I think by Neil Massey. So depends on what you're looking for, what you want to pay, how you want to use it, etc.
Where can I buy this blank gun?
Not sure where you're located, and that can make a big difference. It keeps changing who has them in stock anyway. Just do a web search.

How big is the restrictor hole diameter?
That's going to vary for different models, depending on the blank load it's designed for, the barrel length, etc... when you get Hollywood style restrictor for real guns, they need to know which blanks and what barrel length in addition to the caliber. So there's really no one right answer to this question I'm afraid.
omg this is so cool.
