Barbie is still being an excellent mom to her clutch of adoptees, fussing about them, showing them what is good food, and in general teaching them all about chickening. Barbie had just rotten luck with her clutch this year. I gave her 12 eggs, of which 3 hatched, but none of the hatchlings lived, unfortunately. So I bought 8 young chicks for her. It's been a long, cold and snowy winter, but the flock has finally had an opportunity to stretch their wings, so to speak. Or at least wander around, looking for bugs (nor that there's much of that as yet), bits of green stuff, and generally enjoy themselves.

The flock is happy and doing well, despite the winter temperatures! A couple of the girls have ahd, or are having, hard molts (like the white hen in the video. She is definitely getting perkier though!) At the time I was filming this, a couple of the girls were inside the coop, one came out just after I had stipped filming, singing egg-song, so I guess that's what they were about!

My rooster likes to hang out with the other youngsters. He is still quite young himself and I guess he needs to grow up a bit more before he is ready to take his proper place in the flock. He technically has Discovered Girls, but isn't really showing much adult behavior except for getting his ashes hauled at least once that I have seen. Food fight

The feathered youngsters seem to enjoy a good food fight as much as any human ones! One of them finds a nice tidbit, and that seems to be a signal for one or more of the others to run over and try to steal it. Rinse and repeat until the original food item is gone, or another one finds something that looks better.

I decided to let the youngsters out of the chicken run for a little bit this evening - it was the first time Outside for them! They were not outside for a long while - maybe half an hour - and I was watching over them the entire time, mainly due to the local predators. The babies are definitely getting more teenagery now. They have started flying (not that chickens are strong flyers in general) and doing well in general. I'm looking forward to them getting big enough that I can let them out into the big, bad world outside the chicken run, but there are just so many things out there that will regard the youngsters as nice, bite-sized snacks

Since the babies got an early release from the brooder some days ago, I decided I might as well let them mingle with the rest of the flock, and it seems to be working quite well.
