I liked this. Photos changed a bit quickly for my elderly eyes. Thank you.
oh no wernert it disappeared where is it *W H E R E I S W E R N E R T*
My younger brother and sisters went to this school
I believe the wrecked bridge and ship are when in April of 1957 the ship broke loose from its moorings and crashed into the Fasset Street Bridge. As I have been told by my grandmother and mother: My grandmother, my mother (8 years old) and her sister, my aunt Robin (10 months old) were driving over the bridge to pick up my grandfather, who was just off work from the old Toledo Terminal Railroad. Both my grandmother, and mother told me that they were half way over the bridge, or maybe a little more than half-way, when people got out of their cars and were waving frantically for my grandmother to speed up. She claimed that she didn't know why they were doing that, but after she was the last car over the bridge to Fasset St., she pulled over, got out of the car, and saw what was happening. I don't claim it as fact, merely the story I was told several times when I was a young man in the mid to late 1970's. If 100% accurate, and they had not made it across, and the car fell into the Maumee River on a cold April day, I assume all 3 would have died, which means I never would have been born. To me, personally, I find this story interesting. I hope that you did, too.
Lived on North over. First year driving a car. You couldn't stop or you got stuck..
Is time go on the more this town gets screwed up by the politicians running it
All those road slowly built just to get to the donut shop. The decline from it's own success as the traffic became to great to get into it. A tale as old as time.
I’m surprised there weren’t any photos of the Toledo Scale Company, or Brondes Ford. My grandfather was a millwright for the Scale Company, my father worked the line, and my mother worked in the office. My dad went from there to Brondes as a salesman until 1983.
1954 to 1964, I lived in the Old West End as a small boy. Wonderful neighborhood to grow up in. It had a diverse make-up: Norwegian, German, East European and typical midwestern Americans, of course. Young families and elderly. I lived on the corner of Virginia and Maplewood. Just a few blocks from the Art Museum and Swayne Field Shopping Center ( W.T.Grant store). Went to Glenwood Elementary. Moved away when the freeway was built and cut into the neighborhood😢. Came back in 1972 for technical college downtown. Lived across from Art Museum in the Plaza Hotel. Things were much differentby then. But fond memories of Toledo.
Bob yates popcorn stand at miracolemile shoping center god bless
This bring back to memories
Unfortunately, You can't go to school in Ohio. 💀💀💀
Dead meme
I would have liked to see the west toledo public library on sylvania and willys as well as Augsburg Lutheran church next door. Loved their architecture.
WOOOOWWWW THE FRIGGIN MEMORIES!!!! THANK YOU!! JUST WOW!!!!!! IN MY FEELS NOW.
Dad graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948 and accepted a job as a salesman for the Owens-Illinois Glass Company. We lived on Prescott Street until 1950 when Dad was transferred to the Baltimore Branch. We returned to Toledo in 1952 and lived at 1655 Crestwood Road until 1954, then at 2458 Evans Street until 1957. After five years with the Cincinnati Branch, O-I brought Dad back to Toledo again for a year living at 4131 Sheraton Road in Ottawa Hills, then a final transfer to the Chicago Branch in 1963. I remember Longfellow School for kindergarten in 1953-1954, Nathan Hale Elementary School for grades 1, 2, and 3 in 1954-1957, then freshman high school year at Ottawa Hills High School in 1962-1963. My memories of Toledo are vivid and voluminous. It was a wonderful place for my childhood. The public schools were terrific. The video reminded me of when in 1956 my grandmother took me to see "Run for the Sun" at the Colony Theatre a great film with Richard Widmark, Jane Greer, and Trevor Howard. Toledo, you will always be a part of me. Thanks for the memories.
I lived on Crestwood. 1600 block. Family owned house for over 50 years.
Thanks!
I love Toledo, and I love this video. But, to see the picture of the Edmund Fitzgerald sitting there was very eerie. My mother used to manage the Don’s drive-ins at all three locations that I knew of.
It's all gone. The best of times. It's amazing to look back and see what Toledo had to offer. I can't say that now. So sad. Goodbye, old friend.
Churchills. I had a friend as a kid and he was ..well…from a family with more income lol. His mom used to take us to the grocery store and churchills was so nice compared to the store my parents had to shop at.
I grew up there. Went to Little Flower and Hawkins for grade school…Mctigue for JR high and Rogers HS. I haven’t been back in 20+ years. Got into medicine and settled down south. Maybe it’s time to go visit. The Magic shop photo drew me in…I went to school with the owners son. He was such a cool dude to hang with in high school. He introduced me to flash paper and a fake thumb lol! I can’t remember his name . Damn, hope he is doing well for himself.
Walked to Denman's Red & White almost daily through the 50's. Mom liked fresh bread & milk daily, what with 5 boys to rear. TY for taking me back to the best of times.
Granny creampie
Who remembers Center Supermarket where later Banner Mattress was? Those were great memories.
Times sure have changed since then , I wish we could all go back to those times, when there were no cell phones.
Really great video thank you. The south end of Toledo is where I grew up and the 60's and 70's were great
Southwyck regular back in the day. Although I grew up all over the world, Southwyck Mall was a special place for me. Employment, entertainment, fine clothes, and even love.
Wow Betsy Ross and White Hut! I remember both of those from my childhood. Brings back so many memories. Thank you for sharing!
We drive to Toledo from Indianapolis every so often to visit the art museum. It has a fine restaurant. I usually carry on long, sometimes heated conversations with the curators (in my head) about the choices they’ve made. No other art museum engages me in the same way. It’s always a great visit.
What can I say😥! Brought back memories of a completely different world. It was a good place to raise a family then. I'm officially old cause I remember🙂
8:15 View out the window overlooks the house I lived in for K-2 at Wernert back in the mid-70s. Jumped over the back fence to go to school. 2nd grade class was in one of those portables that are now gone.
I was born in 1955 at Mercy Hospital, a baby boomer. Thanks for those memories!
The only one left in Toledo is Franklin park. So sad. The malls years ago in Toledo were always a good time.
Is that where the Toledo Goaldiggers played? 4:14 I remember my aunt and uncle taking me to see the games in the early 80s.
I literally want to say thank you for posting these videos of toledo. I subscribe to you a couple of weeks back because I wanted to see a lot of vintage Toledo stuff. Love your video of the blizzard.
I worked at Franklin Park Mall for about 2 years in the 80s. It was nice then. I loved to eat at Olga's and the little French bakery place. 😋
Brings back great memories from 1940's-50's Toledo. Streetcars, Tiedtke's and LaSalles, Miracle Mile, Adams Street Woolworth's and Kreske's, the Bargain Barn, the Toledo Zoo and so much more.
That was the good old days
Edward's at Miracle Mile was great! R.I.P.
Royal-Pain-In-The-Ass Transmission!
Spot on! Hinkle's Donuts was indeed the crown jewel of Wernert's Corners . . . and pretty much the only reason to go through that intersection.
Wow! This video is 30 years old now.
Thankyou so much for this!
Grew up 18 years in Toledo and left for Texas for a year now. Is that ice cream igloo on Douglas not still there? I'll be back in a week and it was one of the childhood places to think of going.
I wish i could get a White Tower Double Bacon Butterburger!
Gas 6/7/22 = $5.39/gallon!! Over $70 dollars to fill up a little 13 gallon tank today!! I remember when it was under $1 per gallon ... it was usually somewhere between $0.69 and $0.89/gallon when I started driving!!
Born and raised in Temperance, MI right on the border of Toledo. Went to Bedford HS. Beautiful memories. Thanks for this! 👍🏻
This is how life was when I was growing up as a kid. I miss those days, thank you for the nice memories.
I basically grew up at the Cypress bar next to the donut shop
I spent a lot of time there myself in the late 80s
Omg this is my school I still go there but now this is the last year for wernert
I remember seeing Return of the Jedi with my parents at that theater. 2:19 I remember the line going out the door and we're standing next to those windows.
