I believe that a person with tattoos and a disproportionate face is only capable of speculating on other people’s thoughts or repeating them like a parrot, but is not capable of teaching the TRUTH. He just shows off and “wants to appear.”

Hi Robert, your book How to Think Like a Roman Emperor which I recommend to almost everybody was one of my life-changing books that changed me on how to live a virtuous life and continuing practicing stoicism on everyday life especially who's living in a third-world country where corruption in politics is relevant and virtues & values are no longer relevant. I look forward to purchasing this book in my near local bookstore or for this year's upcoming bookfair. This book must reach to Bestselling list!

I absolutely loved this book! I recently read 'How to think like a Roman emperor' and read 'Verissimus' straight after, it's a great combination as the story really comes to life with the drawings. I feel these books have changed my life. In high school I once wrote an essay on Seneca and stoicism. I found it fascinating at the time, but in later years kind of forgot about it. After my studies I've worked for some time at the legal philosophy department at university and ironically enough that made me lose interest in philosophy in a way. It was highly academical, highly theoretical and quite frankly for a large part incomprehensible 😆. It was such a breath of fresh air to read your books about Stoicism and Marcus Aurelius, and to realize that philosophy can also be very practical, simple, and something you can apply in every day life. This was a real eye opener and it has revived my interest in philosophy and Stoicism. So thanks very much for your great books, Donald 🙏!

Maybe "president" was an attempt to render "Princeps" into English. The term means "first citizen"/"first man of the Senate," so president, odd though it may sound to modern ears, isn't too far off.

Today, I watched the movie Seneca, together with two other members of the Hannover Stoics group. Our response was mediocre; there were aspects of the film we liked (e.g. the beautiful, at times theater-like cinematography), however all of us disliked the way Seneca was portrayed as being nothing but a cowardly hypocrite. There are also aspects regarding his his wife or slaves, which I think are not correct (at least from the available sources). I don‘t think it‘s a black comedy, it is rather deeply dark and unsettling in quite a few scenes. The trailer is clearly misleading in this regard. The alterations already mentioned concerning Nero‘s title are definitely a means of referencing to our present, as there are some more, which I won‘t spoil right now. Altogether the apporach reminds me of Baz Lurman‘s version of Romeo and Juliette from the late 90s. I‘d really like to get into further discussion about the movie and the character of Seneca as he‘s portrayed, when more have watched it.

The end quote with Seneca 'playing Socrates' seemed rather somber to me and I wonder if he is contemplating taking his own life after Nero's orders and comparing it to Socrates similar end? Perhaps.

Seems to me that the trailer is reminiscent of the style of Brittanica. A blend of authentic historical events with post-modern interpretations might explain the anachronisms. Post-modernist criticism often blends historical events and contemporary idioms. Just a wild thought.
