Any recommendations for anime with both English and Japanese subtitles? My first language is Chinese so always tend to focus on the Kanji and ignore the Hiragana and Katakana naturally. Any advice?

I think this video is very helpful in knowing Japan and learning Japanese by expressing small daily life. The video is not very long, so it's even better to watch it a several times. I'm very happy to know this channel.

Is it possible to learn Japanese with a lisp? I have trouble pronouncing my 'R' and can't really tell if I'm getting the word or sentence right. My friends and I are hoping to travel to japan in 26, and I wish to try and learn as much as I can, so we don't insult anyone, but it's difficult to structure words when a lot have that 'r' in them.

The hardest part for me in translating while listening to Japanese, was trying to keep all the information from the beginning of the sentence in my head until the end. This was really tiring! This video was really helpful in getting me to understand how a sentence is built in Japanese. Zooming in vs zooming out is a really elegant way to describe the difference between Japanese and English. Thank you for making this video.

Great!what a valuable and useful information, I knew the word order was different from English but never realized or been told in form of this concept of zoom in and out.And as usual Fumi sensei has such an enticing,soothing, peaceful and smooth voice, could listen to her reading phonebook and still enjoy it!

I'm very uncreative so I just went with what I was literally seeing lmao The sentence I ended up coming up with at 12:00 was 「昨日、雨降っていましたから、ドアを開けてびっくりしました」. Thinking again, it might be more natural to say something like...昨日、雨が降っていたとドアを開けてびっくりしました Hopefully one of those sentences is alright :) Thank you for the video! I'm at the point where I can watch movies and stuff and follow along with the general plot and general topics of conversations, but my biggest hurdle for growth with Japanese is 1) I just have to keep building up my vocabulary still; 2) I need to be more disciplined about bettering my reading skills; 3) I can't get out of my own head when it comes to things like translating what I hear, or being worried about if I sound unnatural or incorrect when I speak to people, and I think a lot of that is because I hesitate and tend to translate a lot in my head still. I'm going to practice applying this video to how I engage with Japanese right away! One slight critique: This video is obviously not meant for beginners. The concept itself is something you shouldn't even be worried about until you've mastered the essential grammar concepts, like past tense, te form, particles, etc. As such, I'd appreciate it if you used more kanji instead of writing everything in hiragana. As someone who's not scared of kanji,「昨日行ったレストランで食べたお寿司は、おいしかったです」　is way easier for me to read than きのういったレストランでたべたおすしは、おいしかったです」(well neither are exactly "hard" to read but hopefully you get my point lol)

Learning about other languages always reminds me how little I know about my native language.

When hearing the zooming concept, I wondered how が fits in. You usually get told that with が, the important point comes before the particle. That would be "zooming out", if I understood correctly.

Thank you so much for posting a video on this kind of topic. I don’t remember the last time I commented on a CZcams video but since you said you read the comments, I feel I have to tell you this. Between formal classes in college and self study, I’ve been studying Japanese for probably five years; however, lately I have felt extremely discouraged at my lack of progress, specifically with my inability to understand native speakers when they talk. I am a native English speaker and it feels like my instincts for where to expect certain information to be when I’m listening to Japanese are completely wrong. This makes the problem of translating in my head even worse and I feel like my comprehension is worse than that of a Japanese toddler. This became so discouraging that I had recently decided to give up Japanese and try Spanish, which is closer to my native language and for which sentence construction and listening come much more naturally. The topic of your video is precisely what I needed to encourage me and now I think I want to resume my Japanese. I feel like consciously approaching Japanese with this outside to inside mindset is just what I need to help break my mind of the English instincts which have been impeding my ability to understand more complex Japanese sentences. Every bit of progress I make from today forward I owe to you and this video because I had resolved to give up Japanese for good. Thank you thank you!!

It's interesting how this is the first time I've heard of this "zoom in" idea since it seems to make the most sense right away! I find it hard to translate into Japanese since English isn't my first language and my brain sometimes goes from Finnish sentence to English and finally to Japanese.. so confusing haha. But I think this will help me a lot in the future, thank you Fumi-sensei!

As a bengali speaker, i didn't need to create the japanese brain. The structure of japanese is 1:1 same as bangla, except for particles. It just makes sense and when I learn the language, I don't meet the same wall as other western language learners. Guess I got lucky, いつもありがとうございます。

Hello FumiSan, a question: I speak German Italian and English fluently, a bit of Spanish, too. I started Japanese, and I'm having a hard hard time 😁. For all languages I know, I have a dedicated part of the brain so I directly think in that language (and dream in that language). With Japanese there are so many aspects to consider that I'm having much more difficulties creating the brain for it: -words: (how you name it); -phrase construction: (how you put it together); -grammatic: (particles, conjugations, negative verb, or negative or past adjective, て-forms, etc...); -accent; -intonation; -whatever more... To create a self standing brain for a language the best is to think the less possible, and follow the flow. What should I focus on to make this happen? Thank you very much, 🙏🏻🌞

THIS was the key that I was missing!!! You just unlocked a part of my brain. I have only started studying Japanese about a year ago and made a lot of new friends while I was out there who I still talk to. Now Im working on the N3 level and you were spot on with how I was thinking. First in English. Then trying to translate into Japanese. Just extra unnecessary steps when all I needed to do was “Zoom in.” I can’t thank you enough! This just made everything a lot easier!!!

The most rewarding experience regarding talking to a Japanese in Japanese is realising that you have massive balls of steel - it was awesome as hell that you actually pulled that off even though in the back of your mind that you made some mistakes. So yeah, just do it - balls deep.
