Untying shoes without jamming – Professor Shoelace

Perfect the lesson, It's so useful for daily life. Thank you so much Mr.Ian.
You're welcome, I'm pleased that the lesson helped you to learn the “Ian Knot”. Congratulations! Hopefully it will find its way comfortably into your daily routine. Enjoy the knot!
Wow! Mr. Ian You can wonder positive stuff. Thanks.
Thanks, it's a kind of interesting knot for which I haven't yet found an application - but which others may still find interesting (and hopefully useful).
Thanks for the video chetta❤️
You're welcome - enjoy the lacing.
Very helpful video! ❤
I'm happy that it helped you. Enjoy the lacing!
Am I stupid?
Probably not - you found your way to this video! (*grin*)
i do this right and it’s just 2 lines
Two lines? You have me puzzled.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻

*Left over right starting knot:* Right loop, left end around the back/far (your perspective, the ”toe”) side of the loop.† Left loop, right end around the front/near (heel) side of the loop. *Right over left starting knot:* Left loop, right end around the back/far (toe) side of the loop.‡ Right loop, left end around the front/near (heel) side of the loop. If you’re used to grabbing one loop and going around the _front/near/heel_ side of the loop and getting a granny knot (as I was), you can simply change the starting knot and finish up tying your laces as you did before. †What Ian does here 0:25. ‡What Ian does here 2:21
Thanks for passing on the valuable advice about the un-balanced “Granny Knot”. As you correctly noted, simply reversing the “Starting Knot” restores balance without having to re-learn the more complex second stage of the knot.
Thanks !!
You're welcome!

@@ProfShoelace bro you invented the fastest shoe lace tying method, you don't get enough credit. Also how did you come up with all of the shoe tying methods and did shoe tying stuff for 10 years? Also you should keep uploading vids. I always hate seeing a good video the ian knot tutorial, and look at there channel and they don't upload anymore.
Thanks for your kind words! You're right, I haven't uploaded for a *very* long time. A few unfortunate events triggered this: My video camera died, then my computer died, then my father died. In the meantime, my website and social media suffered. I'm almost caught up now and hope to resume videos soon. I have plenty more to share!
@@ProfShoelace dang im sorry
I learned to cris-cross my shoestrings on my newly cleaned shoes. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome, I'm pleased to have helped you get your shoes nicely finished off.
I read about the Ian knot on your website about 15 years ago and it’s like having a super power! Like Doctor Who using his sonic screwdriver on a piece of string, changing it into a knot. I’ve used it to tie my laces but also to put balls in a Christmas tree, beautiful and super fast with just a ribbon, I use it when sailing to tie up the sail and other things, etc. I do use the last technique with the pinkies though. Thanks a lot for inventing and sharing!
I'm pleased to hear that you're enjoying the “Ian Knot” - congratulations on learning it! It's also cool that you're using it for more than just tying shoes. As you noted, it's really fun having a super-fast knotting ability at your disposal!
Im 14 thank u so much 😭
You're welcome, I'm happy you learned the knot.
I love how you pioneered the Ian Knot! I've been tying my shoes this way since like 2016/2017 after seeing and saving an ifunny video with this technique that blew my mind. So cool that you invented that!
Thanks, it's equally cool that you've been enjoying the technique long before discovering its origin. Congratulations on learning it, and may you continue enjoying the “Ian Knot” throughout your lifetime.
Thank you professor... You saved my life... Seriously
You're most welcome, I'm pleased that a simple shoe lacing technique could have had such a profound effect on your life. Enjoy the lacing.
I tried this and it destroyed my shoelaces. After a month or two the shoelaces got weak and ripped. 🙁 idk if i did it wrong or something
That's the most surprising comment I've ever read about this lacing technique! It's possibly something to do with the shoe rather than something you're doing wrong. For example, a rough bit of one eyelet, which was previously being bypassed when laced with regular lacing, but which is now being scraped across with this slightly different path. Hope you resolve the mystery!
Great video because the directions are clear. Lately, I have watched and studied many shoelace videos and would describe them as crap because the demonstrations are not clear. Very difficult to see or understand. I eventually did understand a bunch of them but it took around twenty tries. I understood your video the first time I saw it. Thank you.
Thank you, Rick, I really appreciate your kind words. It's harder than most people realize to strike just the right balance of enough information but not too much, as well as going fast enough but not too fast. I'm pleased to hear that I managed to get it right. Best of all, you managed to learn the knot - congratulations!
Thank u so much I have finally learned to tie my laces
I'm pleased that my video helped. Congratulations!
Thank you

Thank you!❤
You're welcome, enjoy the lacing.
I tried this knot, but I personally prefer the Parisian knot, with an extra "twist around" on the initial left over right granny knot. It just holds better than this knot for me.
On my website, I list the “Starting Knot” and “Double Starting Knot” separately, the idea being that the more secure variant can be used to make *any* knot more secure. You're welcome to add the “Double Starting Knot” to this knot if you wish.
I've been tying this same knot for years since my dad, who works for a Power Plant, showed me how he ties his work boots so they don't come untied (he used to do a LOT of walking). If you don't want to "have to hold the original knot tight" while you get the ears going, simply loop the lace back under again, and pull tight. To illustrate - Left over Right starting knot -> bring that left lace back under again for a second "loop". Then tie the double loop with the ears. You won't have to hold it tight.
Your Dad set a good example using a secure shoelace knot on his work boots. Your comment about beginning with a Double Starting Knot is also good advice. In my experience, the centre of the knot ends up very w-i-d-e due to the doubled start plus doubled finish knots. For greater security, wriggle the knot to get the centre tightly bunched.
Thank you
You're welcome, enjoy the lacing.
my dad made me learn this knot when I was probably seven or eight, shortly after this video came out because "you'll thank me later" and "it's good to learn these things when your brain is malleable" and I've never been so mad he was right haha
(*smile*) That's great - well done, Brooke's Dad! I'm pleased that you've benefited from this knot for all these years. Congratulations, Brooke!

You're welcome, Robert
Unfortunately I’m still having to practice this, even after learning of it when I was 9. I’m 21 now and still don’t have the hand-eye coordination to get it right, I usually end up with a lopsided knot or it’s super loose.
Sorry to hear you're having difficulties. You mention that it's both “lopsided” and “loose”. This makes me wonder if you're inadvertently tying it as an unbalanced “Granny Knot”. Try tying your “Starting Knot” in reverse. In other words, if you currently tie your starting knot by crossing the right end over the left end, switch to crossing the left end over the right end (or vice versa). Then complete the “Ian Knot” as you've learned it. Hope it works!
This is simple and best method to tie the lace. Superb ❤❤

Thank you so much! Watched a lot of videos before this one but they didn’t help. So yeah, thanks a lot for teaching this amazing trick! God bless you!❤

As an autistic child, I never learned how to tie my shoes, and my parents quickly gave up trying to teach me the bunny ears method. I shamefully admitted I'd probably never learn how to. Over 20 years later I found a video showing the Ian knot and could do it after about half an hour of practice. I find it much easier and knots finally make sense to me! Thank you for sharing all this
