Chopin: Nocturne in E flat major, Op. 9 No. 2
A nocturne, as the name implies, evokes dreams and visions of night, capturing a combination of restfulness and restlessness.
Even a person who doesn’t know classical music will know this famous Chopin nocturne, arguably the Polish composer’s most well known piece. This piece is quite a mysterious one for me. I’ve played it countless times but every time it still feels and sounds different. Go online and watch other pianists perform and you’ll see many different interpretations.

Adrian Berenguer: Little Things

Music is a big part of my life. From classical to contemporary, from Madonna to Japanese enka, there is always something playing in my ears, no matter how I am feeling. Something unhappy happened last week. We didn’t think we will ever have to cut ties with someone who has long been a part of our lives. I guess nothing is forever, especially since our views are no longer on the same page. When ...

Another good old piece that is forever engraved in my mind. I played this when I was about 10. My piano teacher didn’t like it. “You should play more classical pieces. It teaches you techniques”, she said. 🤷🏻‍♂️

They say the pieces that you learnt before 20 will be seared into your brain forever. I think it is quite true. I first played this popular piece (not classical) when I was about 10. In those days music scores were not so easily attainable, and I remember I was elated to receive a photocopy of the score from a fellow piano student friend. I learnt this piece very quickly and until today, I can ...

It is 8 May again. Today is the 29th death anniversary of the late Taiwanese songstress, and my most beloved idol, Teresa Teng (1953 - 1995). She may have been gone for 29 years, but her songs are still very much alive in the Chinese and Japanese communities around the world today. In the 1980s when I was still a kid, her songs were the very first ones I listened to, which is why she has always...

Happy belated Piano Day! (Actual day was yesterday) I’ve been in love with this 1987 Richard Clayderman piece since I was a kid but I’ve never played it back then. And then there were many times I wanted to learn it and I just couldn’t get started, until three weeks ago… So here it is… “Eléana”. The melody is just beautiful. ❤️
Debussy: Arabesque, L66 No. 1, in E major

Revisited a Debussy piece that I last played about 7-8 years ago. It’s unbelievable I still have it in my fingers after all these years. Talk about muscle memory! The Two Arabesques (Deux arabesques), L. 66, is a pair of arabesques composed for piano by Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) when he was still in his twenties, between the years 1888 and 1891. Although quite an early work, the arabesques c...

The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 846-893, is a collection of two sets of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys, composed for solo keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750). The first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier was composed in the early 1720s, with Bach's autograph dated 1722. The Prelude in C major, BWV 846/1, is a seemingly simple progression of arpeggiated chords. It i...

Dance of the Cygnets is a famous dance from the ballet, Swan Lake, of which the music was composed by Russian composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893). The dance is from the ballet’s second act, the fourth movement of No. 13. The dance is renowned for being challenging because it requires all four dancers to look the same and their movements must be synchronized. It is meant to imitate ...

Happy Mid Autumn Festival! 中秋節快樂! On this day, the moon is full and mooncakes are aplenty. "The Moon Represents My Heart" (月亮代表我的心) is a Mandarin song made famous by the late Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng (鄧麗君) (1953 - 1995). The song is often cited as one of the most famous and beloved Chinese songs of all times. The song was in fact, first sung by Chen Fen Lan (陳芬蘭)(1948 - ) in 1973 for Chen's...

Schönberg: "On My Own" from Les Misérables

Les Misérables must be my favorite musical of all times. I first watched it when I was in Secondary 3 in 1996. Being a student, I could only afford the cheapest ticket and I sat way behind at the Kallang Theatre. When the musical returned to Singapore in 2016, I watched it again with the husband, this time at the Esplanade which is a much better venue. “On My Own" is a solo from the musical for...

I’ve been in love with this 1981 Richard Clayderman piece since I was a kid but I’ve never played it back then, and the reason was because it involves a lot of octaves and some big arpeggio runs which I hated.
