Hybrid Tundra SPOD Install w/ SDHQ Power Reocation
If you have a Hybrid Tundra you may already know the bad news...Toyota out your 12v start battery under the back seat. Is it hard to work on because of this? No, not really. Does it make electrical installs more complicated, time-consuming, and expensive? Absolutely.
Thankfully both SDHQ and us here at Blaze Off-Road are making products to help you get these things wired up and ready to get out on the trail!
On this new Tundra we installed the SDHQ Power Relocation kit, our SPOD mount, a SPOD BantamX, and a ton of Baja Designs lighting.

lol I think I know that shop that did the work! Assuming the parts are also from that shop
42” tires, but light rack comes first 😎
Exactly the video I needed at exactly the right time. Thanks!
Absolutely! Let us know when you’re ready, they are on the website, and a few are on sale!
More hybrid owners should really consider the relocation kit. Damn expensive but some wiring I’ve seen connected to fuse blocks is not safe for amps being pulled. Thanks for finally showing a video of the kit.
You are very right, the factory fuse box and its main power cable are designed for your factory loads, NOT your 400A winch and 100A switching system. We have heard of two people blowing their fuse while winching and were left stranded. No winch, no engine, and a very expense tow bill, as you can imagine being that they were winching.
Do yall know by chance (or have a way of finding) at what amperage (max) the 12v battery can be charged from hybrid high voltage converter since no alternator ? Curious how much amps we can safely pull on a consistent basis from 12v without running into issues. Gonna need winch, lights and dc to dc charging for trailer/secondary battery. Keep up with great videos!
😂
It happens lol
Engine will need to be replaced soon anyway. Send it.
Shots fired lol
What ya got into it? 100k😂😂
25 dollars or so.
Awesome rig!! 🔥🔥
Thank you! Belongs to our buddy Josh, The Dark Yota on socials
I thought this was just gonna be a post about a lack of a fuse. Props to the creator. Also 300+ amps for a winch!?! I don’t know anything about winches but I can tell you that today I had to look up full load on a 2016 Santa Fe and it was only 80 amps…for everything; wipers, lights, infotainment, everything. That’s a beefy winch
Yes the warn VR evo 12k pulls just shy of 400 amps at stall! That is true for the vast majority of winches on the market.
??
??
At 12v that tiny AWG 8 cable is not rated for 200 amps. You would need like 00 to do that much at 12v DC.
I'd use 02 to be safe
Which cable are you referring to? There is no 8awg cable in this video that we refer to.
@@BlazeOffRoad the one going to the relay box looks about 8awg. I'm supporting your point not arguing against it.
Where do you get your battery cable from? Trying to find the double wall in spools but can only seem to find it by the foot
I might be getting old, but did he really say 2500USD ?
Yes! Far cheaper than the $3,500 competitor that everyone is currently using for racing down in Baja! Also, with far more features than the other units!
@@BlazeOffRoadI’m guessing it doesn’t do turn by turn voice directions? I kinda want a Montana 700i (just returned mine for the time being) mixed with DriveSmart86 (I’m going to put this in my mothers car when I get the Pioneer). I’m thinking I’ll just have do two devices unfortunately. Now if only they would interface with my Escort Maxcam360C, but that would be redundant, still would be cool. Garmin is still king of pure GPSS for the everyday person. I’m putting an AVIC-W8600NEX (this and the Escort DO interface 🙂) in my Car, but I want everything now. 😂 I need to upgrade my Garmin Watch AGAIN. But when I want a new watch Garmin comes out with Descent Mk3i 51, I suppose it’s good I didn’t spring for the Mk2i 51 ⌚️The first Garmin I bought for snowmobiling (GPSMAP 62ST) is still going, but I need to replace the AA battery contact set because Alkaline batteries broke one positive terminal (10 min fix).
Looks horrid to me but I guess lots of ppl like it
They are becoming very popular!
Gave you a thumbs up because you only had below 10😊
Thank you!
You may be thinking that Mitch is making it look easy, but it in fact is that easy 😂🙌🏽
It’s unbelievable how quick you can get this kit installed yourself!
Looking forward to this install on hybrid.
Unfortunately the hybrid will have the battery in the rear and will be a far more expensive and difficult install.
@@BlazeOffRoadbasically ur saying don’t put lights on a Land Cruiser or new 4Runner?
@@bobs619 nope, saying that the install will be much more invasive as you have to route cables from the batteries to under the hood like we have to do on the the Tundras. The non-hybrid tundra is about a $800 kit, the hybrid one is closer to $2,000 since you have to use the SDHQ power relocation kit.
@@BlazeOffRoad cool bro! Look forward to your lc250 kit.
That power switch makes everything so easy.
I need the set up on my raptor
You all do such nice work. I wish I was in Colorado and could bring our 4Runner over. Quite a few diode lights I need wired up to the switch panel.
Our products make DIY install VERY easy!
Where do you run the wire for the backlight to?
Those are controlled by the PowerSwitch as well!
Love my Thread overland form you all.
They are awesome units!
I have a 2022 Tacoma off road. What is the best for that model? Thanks in advance
We have a kit on our website for you actually! If you scroll on the home page it’s listed under top products👌
Heat cycling the lithium battery under the hood will cook it.
I love a good clean third gen build! Might be time for me to bump up to the bigger red arc!
That BCDC 1250D is the move when you go lithium and start using high draw products like Starlink!
Not bad I installed a very similar system but 3 battleborn 100AH and Offgrid trek gen 6 solar 48volt output
Sounds like a sweet system! We will be doing the antigravity 300ah battery in our new F250 and are very excited about that.
Nice
Thank you!
Oh cool now yall can blind normal people even more efficiently
I mean sure, or you can see more when out on a S&R run, or while off-roading. These are 100% not used when there are people around, or on the road.
@@BlazeOffRoad tell that to everyone else with a light bar
@@garettanderson5056 no thanks, our friends only use their lights off-road. You can let everyone else know though!
I don’t like em at all, but it’s not my truck so To each their own.
Well thanks for the opinion! 🤘
😂😂😂😂my goodness
Unfortunately we see it a lot.
Supercharger. For sure.
Very fair!
Needs a goose gear!
Oh he will be getting one!
It's meant for max load don't start your car pull in a winch and lift your plow at the same time and I think it'll be ok
Starting your car uses the motor ground, not this body ground. You can easily overload this when a winch pulls 400amps, most of our customers have a 50amp charge controller, and at least 50 amps in lights. this is a 10-6awg cable on most of these Toyotas, well under sized. Go straight to the battery.
But if they drill any new holes it's not original anymore lol
Where do holes need drilled? We definitely aren’t saying to drill any holes 🤔
What is a "Wench"?
What do you mean don't stack all your ground loads on the body Bolt the factory does that
He's saying don't stack extras on the factory one. Make your own
Exactly, and this cable is sized to handle the factory systems, NOT those plus a 400amp winch, 50amp charge controller, an 80amp air compressor, and another 40-80 amps in off-road lights.
Pretty close, yea. Really we are saying to simply go straight to the battery. The bolt isn’t the issue here, the cable size is!
So cool!
We try💁♂️
Cant wait for the battery tray release!
Coming soon! 🔥🔥
I can’t wait to drop off my gen 2 raptor get lights work done
Let’s gooooo!
So u can make one for diode ssc2 on side of roof rack just 1 set so cable that runs up beside the windshield and then splits for each light?
We have a harness coming for that right now in our Backbone harness series. It is designed to run one harness up the windshield in a wire hider, then plug accessory harnesses into that. Currently we offer light bar and chase light harnesses for this kit, and have scene lighting harnesses coming as well!
I have one on my JKUR and really enjoy it. Being parked with a cooler running is no longer any concern. I do wish their control module was Bluetooth and gave some info like power being delivered, but a cheap Bluetooth battery tracker lets me at least watch the power levels and charge pattern.
Yeah we love the panels, they have been amazing, and so convenient! Also, You’ll like their announcement later this year then 😉
Taking rock chips to a new level
It happens🤷♂️
I will be ordering from you guys soon. Was also wondering if you have a setup for the 21' Tundra? I believe you have one of the best vids out there when it comes to installing and all other info in regards to the Garmin and wiring setups. Thanks 😉
Our Toyota single Garmin kit does work on the gen2 Tundra! You just use riv-nuts to get it installed is all, as we don’t like blocking the factory fuse box like other systems have done in the past.
Iron your shirt 😅
Sorry, too busy wiring trucks🤷♂️
Best ad I’ve seen all year , I’m so glad I started out my build with a Blaze Offroad kit. I am terrified of having a rats nest of wires that later on I’d have to replace 😂
There’s a lot that could go wrong without our kits!
Is there any possible way for you to show an install for a 2021 or earlier Tundra? I have the the Trigger 4 system which for me world fairly well, but I'm really considering the Garmin switch. I have front lighting and a decent sound system. I might be possibly expanding the lighting.
The Gen 2 Tundra install is almost identical to the Tacoma and 4Runner install, expect there are no factory mount points, so we recommend using Riv-Nuts for this install! We have had a number of customers go this route, with no issues.
@@BlazeOffRoad thank you for the info, much appreciate!!!
Florida tag Not surprised
Florida tag, Florida boat ramp…
Just ordered mine. Hopefully, get it soon. Already have some rigid pods waiting to be installed.
Where did you get the bracket for it?
blazeoffroad.com/products/2024-tacoma-garmin-powerswitch-ready-to-run-kit?variant=48111765717292
When will you release this? I cannot find this on your site.
After having more than a few issues reported from a number of customers we moved away from switch pros all together and no longer offer them. Reliability and quality is our top priority and unfortunately don’t feel comfortable offering products that can’t meet that standard.
I am currently running to Switch-Pros systems in two different vehicles, one of them for over eight years now. I have not had a single issue with the product. I am surprised to hear this. My experience has been the opposite of what you have been told. Darn it, I have a need for a third one right now in your product surely looked legit.
@@bobholthaus we sold many, and love the units. The pre-Covid models were very reliable! But unfortunately, after the hardware update around that time we saw a down-tick in reliability and move away from offering them.
@@BlazeOffRoadGlad to come across your video and comments. What would you consider to be the best alternative? I really wish Whelen would put a system out for the off-road/overland market. We have relied upon them in the public safety sector for decades.
@@Tigermeg816 the Garmin PowerSwitch or SPOD BantamX are both awesome units! For sure check out our article on the PowerSwitch under “news and how-tos” on our website.
