RV Life - Truck is Toast? Get a New Truck or Fix the Old to Continue RV Life?
I won't give too much away, but last year was great. And then we prep for this year and all was looking good. Got new tires, new battery and our trip reservations were falling into place.
We left Ford dealership with an oil change and they said rotors in excellent shape, brakes at 7mm. Things were all good right before our trip...
Then 2 weeks into our trip.... one thing after another the issues grew. We made the trip, but the end result really sucks! The cost for repairs were higher than expected.
I know when you watch this you might think, it's not all bad. But retiring at 56 doesn't leave a lot of room for big financial disasters. But you have to plan for the worst and have a plan, for the plan. A backup. But I didn't think this would happen this soon.
RV Life, especially full time rv life, can be scary. If you don't have the financial means to recover from a disaster, what are you to do? If you don't have a truck, or you total your home (rv), how do you recover?
Life goes on....

    The wheel well inserts you might be thinking of won't cover or protect any of the front suspension as it is installed behind the springs at best. The rear springs and shocks will get their natural gunk coating from the front tires flinging it up under the truck. The wheel well guards in the rear won't gain you anything either. What you have already installed in the front is sufficient. No need to add them to the rear, as there will be no gain from it. Here is what I will tell you though. Before the truck gets too dirty being a nice clean truck now, go to Harbor Frieght and get a gallon jug of WD-40 and a WD-40 hand pump bottle, NAPA also sells these. Liberally spray down the frame area, under the wheel wells, coat the suspension parts, etc. Avoid spraying the brakes and tires as this can hinder their performance. Later down the road when you go to wash the truck, get yourself a hand pump spray bottle and some refills of "LA's Totally Awesome" from the Dollar Tree. Spray the area under the wheel wells that you applied the WD-40 previously. Let it soak while you wash the rest of the truck. When you get done with the truck body and such, just rinse the LA's Totally Awesome back off the wheel well area really well. This will remove the old WD-40, and will float away all the road grime that the WD-40 kept from attaching to your frame bits. Let it drip dry off most of the rinse water, and then recoat the wheel well areas, frame, rear axle, with a new coating of WD-40. The rest of the water will get displaced and float out/off from the cracks and crevices by the WD-40. Again this will eventually evaporate and leave your undercarraige looking brand new again. Now, what this does. The WD-40 will mostly evaporate leaving a nice thin film that will do a few things. 1. It will shed road rain water for quite a while, protect the frame from gunk sticking directly to the frame that can cause rust and corrosion. 2. It will keep that area looking brand new for years.

    As for bed liners. Don't do a drop in. They wear out the bed paint where they vibrate and rub. Just do the rubber mat, and put cardboard down for the totes to scoot on, but not slide around like they are on clean bare paint.

    • @metaldetectingoregon
      @metaldetectingoregon Před 10 hodinami

      Too late. The bed will be under a canopy and protected from weather and most everything back there is in tubs. The liner actually is working ok as the tubs glide over it about what I'd hoped for easy in/out. It has its flaws but will serve its purpose.

  • @insaynbcr
    @insaynbcr Před dnem

    If you are out of warranty, avoid taking your rig to the dealership for anything. Find a smaller local well known ma/pa repair shop. They are not interested in going out of business, and will do a better job and most likely much lower repair bill. As for brakes. Not knowing your method of braking on the downhills, I will just throw this out for you anyway. Pick a speed you are comfortable with going down hill (say 55 mph). Coast up to that speed and then stab the brakes hard to get your speed back down to about 45-48 mph. Basically get in and get back out. Allow the truck to coast back up to the 55 mph, and repeat until you are down the hill and back on flat ground. What this does is quickly slows you down but allows the brakes to cool while you are coasting back up to speed. If you just ride the brakes to maintain the 55 mph, you will cook the brakes as you never give them time to cool. This also reduces the over heating of the trailer brakes with this pulse type braking, vs riding them.

    • @metaldetectingoregon
      @metaldetectingoregon Před 10 hodinami

      This is what Tow/Haul helps with. Using the engine compression instead of brakes. But that compression, imo and I'm not a mechanic, is too high. I don't ride the brakes as I know they overheat. Which is why I'm complaining about the engine pressure under an acceptable load. Thanks for the advance. Noted.

  • @goldendredger
    @goldendredger Před 2 dny

    Hey man. It's NOT a towing issue. It's a Ford and user issue. You are well within the weight limit claimed by the factory. Make sure your trailer brakes are working well. If you are heating the brakes on the truck up to much you are not using enough trailer brakes. The brakes on the trailer should be adjusted so they are stopping itself and your truck is stopping itself. Reality should be the truck stops itself the same as it would without a trailer attached. Next towing. The Ford engine is junk. Plagued with problems. Towing won't change that but with that said are you towing like you have a trailer on at 55mph or are you blasting down the road at 70mph and mashing your foot to the floor when you hit a hill to maintain that 70mph? Back out of the throttle. Let the truck pull. It has a happy spot when pulling a hill where it will maintain a certain speed without over heating. There is a certain point when stepping on the throttle even in the new truck where speed doesn't increase but the heat and gas consumption with go way up. Back out of the throttle and find the spot where it pulls well but temps remain great. I have a 1 ton truck and I tow a trailer with quads and a huge Lance camper on top. We go to our favorite camping spot and it's a long pull uphill. Some spots I am down to 30mph. It's pulling hard and that's about half throttle. If I mash it harder the temps climb immediately and gas consumption goes way up I can watch the needle drop. But I only gain about 5mph in speed. That's not good. Overheating and pushing it hard is bad. Back off and let it pull where it's happy. Don't just mash into the throttle when you hit the climbs letting the rpm soar and temps shoot way up. That's the same no matter the rig you own. Back off and treat it a bit easier and you won't be in the shop constantly.

    • @metaldetectingoregon
      @metaldetectingoregon Před 10 hodinami

      Thanks for the input. Most of the tow/haul high RPMS is on the down grades. The engine braking won't help with trailer gain (I think). I do need to find the heat and pressure limits so I can monitor them for the new engine. The truck has 3 monitors but the OBDLINK can allow more. Just need to find a chart with limits from Ford on the 7.3L gas and monitor those hill climb temps.

    I would not get all that hung up over the word “Gold” in the name of your metal detector. It’s just marketing, son. Most better modern metal detectors are discriminators that can tell the difference between trash and precious metals. The best detectors are not cheap and most never pay for themselves. My opinion is that folks should only metal detector for leisure fun and exercise - not because you expect to strike it rich. The folks who have gotten the richest from the metal detecting hobby are the people selling the metal detectors. 😂 99.9999% of all treasure hunters using metal detectors lose money on their hobby, but probably more than half enjoy doing it anyway. 😊

    Gold monster 1000 is a gold nugget vlf machine. I would run it along rivers or streams detecting bedrock crevices. Or in the desert in Arizona again hunting bedrock washes. You would not want it for the beach or any kind of general detecting. It is gold nugget specific and makes a zip zip over tiny gold or of course shotgun shot and lead bullets ect. Yes if you where to detect a coin or gold ring along the bedrock of the river it will give a sound. The sound will be the same as a nugget but more of an overload as a coin is much larger than the small gold it's designed to find. It is very specific to nugget hunting on bedrock or old miner tailing piles. To get an idea of what the 1000 would be like put your Manticore in prospect mode. You will hear the threshold and then test some coins or gold rings whatever. This will give you a very good idea of what the 1000 will be like. And the 1000 only has prospect mode. That's what it's designed to do and nothing else. So imagine your Manticore in prospect mode only and you know what the 1000 will be. Have fun!

    Gold numbers tend to fluctuate alot between low and medium numbers at least on The Legend. I still just dig everything just in case unless it grunts alot. One ring I found was deep and sounded like iron but after a few bites into the sand it became better sounding and I popped out a 14k amethyst ring.

    yeah you need a bigger scoop to compete on beaches. Less time digging is more time to roam. If you're not an avid beach detector it's not worth it, but if you are, then Xtreme scoops makes really good durable sand scoops. It also helps with digging when the water starts to fill your hole.
