40mph speed barge with 100hp Yamaha outboard
Hey everyone!
While I undergo a full shop renovation, I have been dabbling with my new toy, a DJI drone. This is my custom built 17' pontoon with a 100hp Yamaha 4 cylinder, 4 stroke outboard. Not such a small engine! I built this boat with my father over the winter and it's exceeded all of my expectations. It is capable of carrying 3000lbs loaded, or a bunch of friends with optional removeable picnic table.
Stay tuned for more small engine content once the new shop is finished!

    I bought a Still 041AV back in 1967. The mixture recommended in the manual said 40:1 . I have been using that ratio all along for 57 years and other than replacing the carb and spark plugs a few time, the saw still runs great.

    The likely answer as to why chainsaws run hotter with more oil in the fuel mix is because oil is replacing gasoline and the gasoline burns more efficiently to produce power. What's important here is not that the temperature is higher, but rather do the hotter operating temperatures reduce the life cycle of any components? And I would surmise that only the manufacturer can make that determination. But I will give the audience an important fact. One that was not presented in this video. Still says to use a 25 to 1 fuel mix ratio if one does not use stihl oil in the oil mix. Don't believe me? Read the owner's manual. Thank you for a very informative test.

    Great experiment! Another problem with using extra 2-cycle oil is the increase in carbon particles in the cylinder. That would probably cause extra wear.

    Even if it is true as you say, a small increase in temperature is Not detrimental to engine wear and longevity, but an underlubricated engine certainly will increase its wear and reduce longevity. Also, for the test to be valid the chain should have been re-sharpened and the carby mixture adjusted more richer to comensate for the extra oil content, air being the same density assumed.

    25:1 is a mix you would have seen for older engines from the 70’s…most 2-strokes are 50:1 today…better gas, better oil, better engines!…gone are the days of mixing in what ever oil you had kicking around and what ever volumes and mixes…these new engines don’t like those “guess-a-gas” mixes from back in the day!..lol!!

  • @brendan2599
    @brendan2599 Před 4 dny

    Running temp has a lot to do with the adjustment on the carb. 25:1 needs to have the carb turned more rich to make up for the lower gas comtent (almost half). Otherwise you'll run lean by switching, which will run hotter. The carb needs to be properly adjusted any time you change the fuel mix.

  • @doctorcountersteer6580

    If you want your 2 cycle engine to last the longest time possible, use Saber racing oil by Amsoil. They will guarantee their product in your engine clear down to 100:1, & it is pretty easy on the nose and especially on the wallet. I have been running all my equipment at about 85:1 for about 7 years now, mixed with non-ethanol 90 octane fuel with ZERO issues ( other than saving money!! )

    I would think the 104-110 ml would be a helpful failsafe for Stihl. Most gas pumps are not going to stop at exactly 5 liters or even 1.0 gallon. I personally stop pumping at .9 gallon and my mix is plenty rich and I have never lost any 2 cycle or 4 mix piece of equipment. Thanks for the video.

  • @peterstone172
    @peterstone172 Před 6 dny

    I guessed higher temperatures with higher oil ratio. The hydrocarbons in the oil are of much longer chain length and hold more energy in their bonds which gives off a greater enthalpy of heat when combusted. Same story with petrol vs the longer chain diesel. Diesel gives a hotter burn, more energy in the bonds of the longer hydrocarbon. There would be more carbon build up in the engine with 25:1 vs 50:1. Both mixtures do still work, but it's evident that 25:1 is an unnecessarily rich mixture.

    Been running two strokes for 40 years. There’s a big difference between brands, not just what specification they conform to but how much oil is maintained in the crank, how much carbon builds up, whether the oil burns or leaves the combustion chamber as an oil. Sadly some of the more expensive oils leave more carbon in the combustion chamber and in my experience damage caused by excessive carbon is a common cause of piston and cylinder damage.
