Sailing Turbulent Overfalls - Swinge to Sark via St Peters Port
Welcome to East Coast Sailing. I finally achieved my dream of sailing to the Channel Islands after 2 previous failed attempts due to poor weather. I made it into Alderney, sailing into Bray Harbour. After spending 4 days on the island, I uncovered its many hidden gems, making friends with other YouTubing sailors, it was time to move on to discover Guernsey & Sark. I had to face my dreaded nemesis which was the turbulent waters of the Swinge. The Swinge is a narrow channel that produces steep overfalls when fast moving tides pass over the mountainous terrain of the seabed. This stretch of water is notorious and is a right of passage for many sailors, however it needs to be treated with the upmost respect. These sailing grounds have claimed many lives and vessels. After having a fairly comfortable passage through the Swinge I sailed through the big waves rolling in from the Atlantic. I have never seen waves this big where my boat sank between the troughs where I lost view of the horizon. I finally landed in Guernsey. I spent 1 night in St Peters Port in Victoria Marina where Spirit Yachts were having a sales expo. I admired the craftsmanship of the wooden yachts as my berth was opposite the pontoon. After a very relaxing stay in the protection of the harbour, I set sail the next day to explore Sark. After anchoring on one of the buoys in the bay of Havre Gosselin. I kayaked to the shore and climbed up the rocky cliff into someone’s back garden and finally made it onto the main road. Being on Sark was like stepping back 200 years. No cars, just bikes, horses and walking. I finally made it to La Coupee, walking over the narrow walkway framed perfectly with the crystal blue waters of the English Channel & steep meandering cliffs, before finally heading back to Alderney before making the long voyage home over the English Channel. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

    Nice one, Alderney is one of my fave places to sail as well as the rest of the Channel Islands. I’m sure you know this but if you approach the mooring buoy from the same way as the other moored boats are facing you can creep up on it and be less likely to fall off as you go forward to pick up the buoy. I've just found your channel - very enjoyable. We've sailed to the Channel Islands many times and your videos brought back great memories. Glad you didn't have any fog which is the main bugbear of the CIs. As you say, avoid Alderney in strong NE winds. I was once there in a NE storm 10 which was horrifying but Alderney remains one of our favourites.

      Thank you, I only had fog when i was in Gosport heading home, it burnt off by early morning. The swells in that harbour were incredible. I was drinking 6 cups of expresso at night keeping watch lol. On one night i was thrown off the pontoon which shook so violently by the swells and landed in a tender.đŸ€Ł Theres me thinking i'm hardcore at anchor in those conditions and 2 race boats came in during the height of the storm and at night. Yes i cant wait to return.

    The camera was perfectly placed. I wonder if the boat could have been hove-to? At least that is what I would have tested first since it is so quick. The squalls are short-lived, then you could calmly investigate the situation. Cheers.

Channels started to get some traction and the views and subs are growing much faster. • @EastCoastSailing_
      @EastCoastSailing_ Pƙed 18 dny

      Hello, I wouldn’t get too caught up in pilotage and sticking to buoys. All the orange buoys are residents swinging moorings which I tried to land on originally and realised
. I knew bad weather was coming and they had a bit more protection đŸ€Ł. Yellow buoys are the visitors moorings ÂŁ25 a night. The water is very deep all over the harbour there’s only a few hazards in the harbour. I’m actually producing the “sailors guide to Alderney” and I’ll explain everything including the pilotage, navigation as well as things to do while your there. I’ll cover your question in vid but anything else you would like to see just let me know. The only area is the harbour entrance you need to be careful. Lots of shallow ground and turbulent over falls on the right as you approach near the knuckle wall. You have to stick closer to the rocks on the left which feels uncomfortable watching breaking water lap over jagged rocks. The harbour is massive and they only have a couple of big ships delivering food & produce a week. The rest of the traffic is pleasure crafts. Everyone has a duty to avoid a collision, being slow, sensible and keeping a good look out in the harbour will keep you safe. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      @@ianqv Hi Ian. Yes been back for a month now. Just takes a while editing. This year’s weather has been wild. My best advice to you, if you can only take a few weeks off on holiday, you just have to hammer it and go even on the days the forecast is showing 25 knots. It’s not comfortable or pleasant but well worth it when you get there. The only day. I would choose wisely is the crossing day. I had a 28 knot tail wind on the way back after flat calm and it wasn’t nice being in it for 5 hours. Really kicked up by the needles when the tide turned. Just carry loads of spares, there were loads of boats in Alderney with engine issues, about 4-5.
