It's true James sounded damn heavy back then, in fact people can say what they will about metallica and the richness or lack thereof of their music, James's vocals belong in the objectively heaviest of all metal, especially compared to some growlers that just sound noisy and completely not agressive nor heavy, but right now I'd rather have modern James than no James at all

I know ima get crucified for this, but I think in James' first few years he sounded like shit live. He could hit the notes but he always sounded like he was nearly out of breath and trying to push it. By '88 to now he sounds even better than recording most of the time.

Alot of people say that 1989 or 1991 were his best years in reference to him singing this song, but if he sung like that back in 1985 or 1986 it wouldn't have synced in with the way they were playing it instrumentally back then and the sounds they were getting from their instruments. All that has to be taken into account.

The drop off from 93 to 94 is nutty... Crazy how his voice regressed that much in just a year. Unless 94 was the first year he decided he needed to change the way he sings or else hes gonna do even more more damage. I've tried to sing like him with that grit and my voice hurts pretty fast, I also feel the need to cough when I do it. Ive also noticed he spits alot during concerts, probably a result of his singing style. Crazy how he did it for so many years with that much control of his notes.
