Dr. Stein retired from medical practice at the end of 2022 to bring everything that she learned, over 33 years, about Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Fibromyalgia (FM) and Environmental Sensitivities (ES), Long COVID, and chronic pain to anyone worldwide wanting to take charge of their health and improve their quality of life.
She became ill with ME/CFS, FM, and ES in 1989. Since then, she learned that she has the full alphabet of related conditions including joint hypermobility, orthostatic dysfunction, and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). Her passion is to help others with these conditions and to make their journey to healing easier and faster than hers was.

    I do it all the time, Ellie. I'm trying to learn that when I realize I'm doing it I tell myself, "This isn't real, right now." Then I try to focus on things around me that are real in the moment. Don't know if that's the right way to do it, but I'm doing it. :-)

    For me, healing is on different levels - and I am learning every day. It is healing on emotional and physical level, but also for me spiritually. To be whole, all things put together. I can not say that I have recovered physically, but on an emotional level I am much better than I have been in my entire life….I hope this will affect my body over time.

    ☠☠☠ This is the kind of super-vague "just listen to your body!" pacing advice that got me from mild to very severe and bedbound. You CANNOT "just listen to your body" when PEM symptoms don't hit until 24-48 hours later. You're going to feel fine, even great the day-of, and only the next day will your body go into red-alert shutdown. Heart rate needs to stay between 90-110, and physical exertion needs to be no more than 8% of your daily activity, 5% if you are severe or very severe (e.g. if you are moderately severe and can do 8 hours of activity a day, you can do 38 minutes of exercise between 90-110bpm, BUT that includes things like showering and moving from one room to another if that raises your heart rate above 90).

    • @DrEleanorStein
      @DrEleanorStein Před 7 dny

      I agree with you that just listening to the body will not be enough if you have delayed PEM. However not paying attention to the body is a recipe for disaster. Have you watched my video about how to use wearable trackers as an additional tool? czcams.com/video/sZeSVNgbIuQ/video.html

    Thank you for sharing! The hardest part for me has been to accept that I can’t go on the “hardest” trail like I used to, but that I’m not less of a person because of it. I’ve been learning to see other paths in my life which are more adapted to what my body can do and can be equally enjoyable. This was a very good example. I’m saving your video for when I need a reminder. ❤

    I have cfs/me. That can be proven to be mitos failure by doing the mitochondria failure blood test,inspired by Dr Sarah Myhill and invented by biochemist John Mclaren Howard. The man once voted best doctor in Europe (by other doctors) Dr Dietrich Klinghardt said "nine times out of ten cfs/me is undiagnosed lyme disease". The blood test is only 70% accurate for lyme. The problem is a lyme bacteria called ehrlichia which stops the mitos from working properly.One has to do a parasite cleanse first before going after the lyme bacteria because parasites act as little reservoirs for bacteria and heavy metals-so use binders to mop up heavy metals if you are doing parasite cleanses. Good luck.

    So this means that you can’t get healed from long Covid without medicin. I thought (and wish)the way was brain retraining

    • @DrEleanorStein
      @DrEleanorStein Před 15 dny

      Katarina, I thought I replied already but don't see it - so here goes again. You ask an important question. My take is that long COVID and ME are complex and variable so it is unlikely that any one medicine will work in all. This is why clinical trials haven't been successful yet. There are likely some medications that will help some people and hopefully the trials will point us in a direction. Brain retraining is a tool, not a cure. It can help some people with some symptoms, especially pain and sensitivity symptoms but in my experience doesn't cure the underlying energy pathology of ME or long COVID. So some people can benefit but few recover with brain training alone.

  • @katarinalidman2156

    I’ve got long Covid. I’m housebound. I feel so bad in the sun. Do you have benefit of being outside but not in the sun?

    • @DrEleanorStein
      @DrEleanorStein Před 16 dny

      Katrina, I'm so sorry for your profound disability. My suggestion for anyone severely ill is to start with the tiniest dose, eg. just sit next to a window when the sun is in that direction and open it for 1 minute. See how you do and then slowly build up. If even this feels scary, you could start by picturing yourself in the sunlight in your imagination to get your brain more comfortable with the idea. This is a successful neuroplastic strategy for people who are highly sensitive. You might want to pause going outside for real until you are pretty comfortable with imaginary and window exposure. According to what I'm learning, glass blocks almost all infrared light and this is what our mitochondria need. But if you go too hard too fast, you might overshoot the body's ability to adapt.

    I get up often with the daylight (in summer often very early) walk outside on my balcony barefoot and do one minute qi gong standing (since I can not stand for longer…), and then sit down in the doorway to drink my first electrolyte shot - and get 10 min of daylight. In the wintertime I get some clothes on and sit outside for 10-15 minutes when the light comes a bit later in the morning. Since I am not able to walk in nature, the garden around the house is very important to me, just to sit by the flowerbed and do som weeding is very calming, especially if I have done a bit stressful activity and need to wind down before resting. It must be great to see the Unesco place! I have seen documentarys of it, with the norwegian archeologist Ingstad. Enjoy!

      @DrEleanorStein Před 19 dny

      The window has to be open. Regular glass allows most UVA light through but almost no UVB, or UVC. Glass is designed to let visible light through (>80%) but blocks 90% of more of infrared light. It is designed this way to prevent rooms from heating up too much.

      Rose my understanding, and I am still on a steep learning curve with this so i'm open to other people's opinions is that fifty percent of the sun's rays are in the red and infrared range that activate our mitochondria. Given that most of us get virtually none of these wavelengths because we're inside and glass blocks These wavelengths entirely Any amount of time spent outside Would be beneficial. If you try it please report back how it works for you.

      yes, my read of the research (and my learning is still very much in process) is that poor mitochondrial function is at the root of most mental and physical health conditions. then one could ask OK what causes the mitochondria to function poorly. In addition to some of the causes mentioned in this video and in my blogpost www.eleanorsteinmd.ca/blog/how-to-improve-mitochondrial-function, I'm learning more about some of the root causes of poor mitochondrial function that I will share in future.

    I really like the point that your body will tell you if your strategies are helping. It reminds if one of my favourite quotes from Rilke: 'Live your way into the answers'.

    Have you heard about the Pareto princip; 20% effort and 80% resault? I have also read the book microhabits. It gives the perspective that small change of habits over time can push us foreward as long as we are consistently doing them daily. I think it is important as many of us got into the fatigue by trying to do everything perfect. So great reminder!

    • @DrEleanorStein
      @DrEleanorStein Před 27 dny

      I have not heard of the Pareto principle. And I have been using the concept of baby steps before I read Microhabits. But having others write about it gives confidence that baby steps can get us there - as opposed to the boot camp approach which will cause crashes and is to be avoided.

    • @synnevashaustveit9825
      @synnevashaustveit9825 Před 26 dny

      The pareto princip is a mathematic princip - that I heard some functional medicine doctors talk about in a podcast - to make people calm the «harder better stronger faster» drive in society. Microhabits are a bit fun because it set numbers on how effective it can be to be consistent over time I think. And my brain often likes that :-)

    Thank you. Sometimes it is hard to keep moving forward and go for progress and not keep berating myself for not doing wellness perfectly.

    • @DrEleanorStein
      @DrEleanorStein Před 27 dny

      Berating is never good. It activates the fight/flight/freeze system and your brain feeling unsafe generates more symptoms to get your attention. The science behind this is detailed in Neff and Germer's book The Mindful Self Compassion Workbook. that book is what convinced me that being hard on myself is not helpful.

    Amen to this. On good days when you can do something, anything, but do something. On bad days when you can't, feed the brain with good, only good uplifting stuff, avoid toxic news like the plague ... cos that's exactly what it is, a plague!

      both sexes can get autoimmune diseases for sure. But until recently we have not understood why there are more common in women. Infection is a common trigger for AI diseases.

    Over the long weekend, I went paddleboarding in a very cold mountain lake on what ended up being a bit of a stormy day. I ended up dunked in the lake after a bit of a choppy ride 🥶and spent all day out of the house. It was a lot of firsts, made possible by a friend, and although I was quite sore afterward, I wouldn't trade the memories, the laughter, or the experience for anything. Definitely decided I'm a fairweather paddler though. 🤣
