I have an interesting history. I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland by a woman who had dual citizenship -- she was born in Scotland, emigrated to the US. She "got into trouble", and went to Scotland to hide out with her parents until she'd birthed me, then as soon as we were both able to travel, we both came back to Southern California, and I was put up for adoption, since it was then quite a taboo to be a single mother in the mid-1950s. My adoptive parents also were British (Mum -- Yorkshire), and Scottish (Dad, born in Glasgow). I was steeped in the British/Scottish lifestyles and was very carefully taught my manners in the tradition of the many children who came up in the UK. My accent turned out to be a very interesting mish-mash of Mum's North-of England accent and Dad's gutteral Clydeside Scottish accent. Long story short, I still have a great respect for the UK and its many years of tradition, and I know this tune both as the secondary American National Anthem ("My County 'Tis Of Thee"), and also as "God Save the Queen" (now God Save the King"). I had the thrill of playing this organ in the summer of 1976 while Dr. Keith Chapman was still the titulaire there. I had just graduated from the University of Southern California with my Masters in Church Music, and was going through Army boot camp at nearby Fort Dix, NJ. I was visiting longtime family friends who lived in a Philadelphia suburb over a weekend pass. I signed the guest register, PFC G. Mark Caldwell, MCHMus. This caught the attention of Dr. Chapman, so he offered me "hands-on" for the 10am concert. I was a "special" for the concert.
That organ LOVES the first player.
TRUELLY WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SURELY, this is one of the greatest organs on earth!!!!!
Gordon Turk, awesome musician ❤❤❤!
Fantastic Concert!
Appreciate😊
Bravo Dr. Gordon Turk 👍🏿🙏🏿
This is a masterful performance. What a virtuoso!
19:28 Melody the Music Pet, the greatest pet that you can get. We'll help her find her ticket for the train!/Mouse has cheese. The Knight has peas. And Joey has the jumping beans. That's what we need to make the Rocket soup.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful concert with the online community! It's always a pleasure to hear the organ in person, but travelling to Philadelphia for every concert isn't always possible, so this is a close second! I hope that it helps to expose more people to this amazing music and instrument. Congratulations to the Friends, Dr. Turk, and all others involved for putting on a great event. I hope to be able to make it to Philadelphia again soon to see an event in person!
If you go to Philly for a Wanamaker Organ even I highly recommend going for Wanamaker Organ day. The organ sound so good in the Summer. That is why they record the organ in the Summer. I would get a hotel room early as Organ Day happens the same weekend as Philly Pride so rooms sell out faster.
Minute 57:55 the moment when Dr. Floyd play God Creation of Humanity and explained us the creation of a life
Love that "endless crescendo" at the end of the Dupre.
God Save The Queen R I P Queen Elizabeth ll 🕊️🇬🇧👸🏻🙍🏻♂️
Divine
I’m in Oregon and I will certainly travel to hear the fabulous artists and for sure I see shopping at Macy’sa new reason to support The Wanamaker
Les faussetés sur l anche du grand orgue ne dérangent personne + ?????
Are these concerts publicized anywhere? I'd really like to attend a future event.
Kudos, and respect to the young lady (the 2nd organist) on her ability at such a young age to play a pipe organ..❤❤😊😊
❤
Coolness!
Best anthem ever written.
Thrilled for the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ Day Concert! What a diverse and captivating program by the assistant organists. Looking forward to the next performance!
Thank you for uploading this video on CZcams, so I can listen to a fantastic organ recital on this fabulous organ.
These Wannamaker recitals are a real treat! I was able to play this instrument (briefly) way bakc when I was at Eaton's Canada and visiting Macy's exec for business reasons. It's an awesome instrument unrivaled anywhere really. And these organists make it really work hard. Thank you Macy's!!!
Especially delightful watching the organist's hands fly over all the manuels in Mendleshon's scherzo. Excellent performance by all organists.
An ignorant person speaking, forgive me... But How do they change the stops? I've watched her hands and feet and also the person turning pages and I can't for the life of me see how the stops are changed! Sometimes many stops are altered in a fraction of a second, but neither of the people seem to be responsible for doing it? How is it done? So I've just now watched the video further, and when some organists are playing, their helper is pressing a button on the lower keyboard that changes the stops, but with other organists that button is NOT being pressed by anyone, yet the stops are still somehow changing... This really intrigues me, I won't sleep until I know how this is happening!
Marvelous, and great credit to them and the Foundation and Macy’s, one and all ! Thank you.
Ironic that this was performed in the very city where the Founding Fathers told the king to "sod off"!
Queen Elizabeth showed up in Philly to celebrate the Bicentennial, which would be a closer connection.
A nice tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth who showed solidarity with the United States on one of it's darkest days and on it's 20th. anniversary.
I stand for the national Anthem of the USA and for the QUEENS now KINGS Anthem. GOD Save our nations
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland thanks you for your upload, and marvellous rendition of our National Anthem! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Beautiful
I must say that the use of the bells in the pedals was apropos of Vierne!
Hairy on the back of my neck standing up What a wonderefull instrument played by very tallented Musicians
Congratulations for the marvelous music !!! I enjoyed a lot. Amazing!
I love the majestic sounds of this organ. It truly is the King of Instruments.
A real pleasure to hear 'Cortège et Litanie' from Marcel Dupré, who played on this organ, and transcribed this orchestra work for this organ, maybe ?
Thank you all! The concert was absolutely divine! Thanks to Macy's too!
When I was a small boy I got to sit next to Virgil Fox as he played the organ . What a experience. My dad was in management at Wanamaker. I got to explore many of the places off of the floor:
Organ has always been my favorite instrument, everything else comes in second collectively. 😅
Ye gads what a 6 manual monster! Heard it once while in Philly for Peace Corps training 1983❣️🎼🎵🎶
i like sekular organs very much too!
The most wonderful yet!
The amazing thing about the great organs-of which this is truly one-is that (except for commercially manufactured ones) no two are the same. This six manual organ is truly a king among kings, with a nearly infinite variety of sounds. One can see why the organ is called the king of instruments.
