Super Sunday Windfoiling Waves in Maui with a great group
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 2 měsíci
It was a great day with great people in great conditions. Wind was about ENE 25 mph with gust to 35. Waves were head high plus, NNW at about 12 seconds. I was on a SAB 853/370 custom 810 fuselage and 3.6 Hot Sails Freestyle. Of course my 110L 6ft Roberts. Still working on mounts and editing for the insta360 x3 but starting to figure it out. 3.0 Windfoiling Reef Waves is Fun at Kanaha Maui

First day with my new Insta360 X3. Still experimenting with mounts and editing but like it so far. Was a 25 mph day with gusts to 40 so the small waves were pretty blown out. But it is still lots of fun on a foil. Windfoiling on swells can be a lot like windsurf wave riding as you can use the power in the sail to help with the carves. The foil just smooths out the water and makes the 3 ft swell...

Windfoiling in small reformed waves at Kanaha Maui is FUN!!. When the tide is too low to go over the reef or the waves are too big for my skill set, carving back and forth on small swells can be a blast. • @adrianhessels839
      @adrianhessels839 Před měsícem

      Thanks Chuck, sorry for the slow reply I have been travelling Regarding the nose mount I experimented with the circular Insta360 mount and even their stick but it did not stick so I went back to the Gopro slide in mount. I ended up using 7 of the 2 way hinged connections tighted with nuts and bolts except one downward facing thumb screw to act as a support on the board. I had to set it up before attaching the gopro sliding plate so I could see were the support hit the board to get the right position for the plate. The hinged connections seem to bend only on big crashes helping to absorb some of the shock for the camera. I found adding just 2 hinges allowed for a much narrow field of view which I preferred. Still working on adjusting the angle to better capture the foil. So I am up to 7 hinges with a slide in Gopro mount at the bottom and a screw in insta360 mount at the top. This makes for fast set up. I use 70lb test fishing line back to the Chinook plate clip. Can't seem to paste a photo but hope this helps.

      Thanks Chuck it is TOO MUCH FUN!!! Yes there are a few of us playing in the waves at Kanaha and there are a few windfoilers that prefer downwinding in the big off shore swell. The waves are best from October through April but the wind gets lighter in January and February. So I am usually there In Oct/Nov and Mar/Apr but the tides are better in the fall. But it is weather so anything can happen. I have my own gear there but places like Secound Wind, Kanaha Kai and Maui Windsurf Company rent windsurfing gear and some foils but I believe they have limited inventory. It may work best to bring your own foil and rent a foil board and rig. Hope this helps

      Have you previously traveled there & back with your own foil board & sail rig or too risky? Would love to bring my Reef Warriors - Top Gun Maverick WWF board & GoFoil. Any recommendation as to where to stay for two weeks near Kanaha Beach Park? Thanks

    • @adrianhessels839
      @adrianhessels839 Před 5 měsíci

      I have travelled with my board/rig/foil once and it arrived fine. However it cost $500 one way on Westjet. It seems about 2 years ago the price for most airlines to ship boards went way up. Renting Windfoiling gear is sparse so bringing your own is what I would do, but it is pricey. As for where to stay I would say explore VRBO and it depends what else you might want to do and who else you are with. You will be getting up with the sun, because of the time change, at 6 or 7 and you won't need to get to Kanaha until about 11 (wind usually does not start before then) because you are not allowed to windfoil until then. So there is lots of time in the morning for walks on the beach, bike rides, surfing, hiking even a round of golf and the drive from Kihei is still only 20 to 30 minutes while the drive from places on the north shore like Paia (15 min) or Haiku (25min). Paia is a surf/tourist town, Haiku has a rural up country vibe but can get a little damp at times. Kula/Pukalani are also options on the north side. While Kihei/Wailea are tourist areas with the nice beaches and lots of options. Hope this helps

      Bev used her camera. Thanks, I really don't know what I am doing but it sure is fun. Using the power in the sail helps me bring the board around quicker than if I just use foot pressure. I find I like quicker turns on the smaller swells and a bit of a wider arc on the bigger swells. I think it's because I get to use the speed I can generate coming down the swell in the carve. But that just me.

      I would encourage you to try foiling it turns iffy waves and wind into lots of fun. IMO it's easier to learn to fly on a windfoil than a wingfoil if you know how to windsurf. Although jibing on a wing can be easier to pick up because you do not have to switch your feet. That said it I figured jibing out in short order on a windfoil but only because I removed my foot straps.

    • @adrianhessels839

      Thanks Chuck wave windfoiling is sure a blast. My biggest sail is 5.4m but I only use it when it is very light say under 10knts with some higher gusts to get going. Most of the time I am using my 4.4m in wind speeds in 10-12knts with higher gusts. I am not worthy to launch from Maliko but do like going out in the open ocean outside of Uppers at Kanaha and riding downwind swell. I have done it with the sail flagged just floating along but prefer to have the power in the sail to carve up and down the swells going left. I will try to remember to wear my camera next time there is a strong easterly. For me riding a N/NW swell/wave over the reef on NE trade is the best because the waves break in long smooth lines and I can turn both ways with power in the sail. Probably just the windsurfer in me that likes carving turns with the power on. It is still a work in progress but a lot fun.

    Hi, looking at moving from Slingshot to SAB. Can you tell me which gear you’re using and you’re thoughts on the quality of the SAB gear. I’m wind foil wave riding using the Onda 835 + S380 on a Slingshot fuse & Alu 103 mast. Considering the move to the SAB red devil 93. Thanks for any feedback 🙏🏼

    • @adrianhessels839
      @adrianhessels839 Před 8 měsíci

      I ride the 945, 940 or 835 with a S425 on a 810 custom fuselage with a 95 carbon mast on a custom 6 ft by 28" board. I find the Onda line to behave very nicely on the wave for the type of riding I like to do. Which is carving both ways using the power of the sail in the carves. I prefer to use a smaller foil provided I don't need a sail bigger than my 4.4 freestyle. As I can carve harder with the smaller foil and on bigger waves (say > 4ft faces) the 945 is a bit too slow to move around on the wave. However if the waves are smaller the 945 can be a blast as you actually feel the boost of the wave move than on the smaller foils. I have never tried the red devil foils but SAB considers them race foils and may not be as loose as I would like. I suggest talking it over with a SAB expert like the folks at sailworks. I had a 940 delaminate but SAB replaced it. I think it was a rare event as all my other SAB foils are fine as are my friends foils. hope this helps

      @@adrianhessels839 Thanks very much for the feedback 👍🏻 So do you find there’s a big enough difference between the W835 and W940 to justify owning both?

    • @adrianhessels839
      @adrianhessels839 Před 8 měsíci

      Thats a good question and probably depends on what we define "difference" as. And depends on the type of wave riding you like. I would say there is more of a difference between the 835 and 940 than the 940 and 945. The stall speed on the 940 is less for sure as I find sometimes waiting for a wave on the 835 I slow down too much and drop off foil. And I know the 940 is better in light winds. The other difference I notice is the 835 is looser than the 940. But if you only plan on going out on 15knt plus days with swells over 3ft then I would only ride the 835 anyway.

    • @adrianhessels839
      @adrianhessels839 Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks I am glad you liked the video. Have you tried Windfoiling in Waves? I have found that as I progressed to more efficient foils I use my harness mostly to start/take off and when going up wind. I find very little load with the small sails once flying on a 1100 cm2 foil. So say 25% of the time when conditions are good and wave foiling. If I am on my big 5.4 sail and in flat water conditions taking longer reaches with a bigger foil maybe closer to 60% of the time. Of course I am not interested in going fast and probably reach my maximum speed when coming down a swell or wave.

      @adrianhessels839 Před 10 měsíci

      Ah yes, I am not good enough to foil with foot straps, I have used foot straps but prefer going without in the waves. Just me; however the surfers I know don't use foot straps and do move around the board. If you find it better with straps thats great, as long as you are having fun it's the ways to go I have been riding a new board this year but don't think I will go much smaller than 110L 6ft by 27 in. as I am 85kg. I built a 85L 25in wide board and it was a bit more lively but always having to water start and use a bigger sail was not worth it for me. Have fun foiling.

  • @torotom2023

    • @adrianhessels839
      @adrianhessels839 Před 10 měsíci

      Can't disagree that when conditions are right windsurfing is awesome. However most days the foil allows me to have more fun and catch 10 times more waves. No stop and go, flying through all the jibes and the waves feel twice as big. Don't understand why more wave windsurfers don't give it a try; its way easier to learn than windsurfing especially without foot straps. thanks for the note

    Looking great man! I love it! Try flagging the sail all the way out when frontside. We actually have a handle over the boom clamp so you just hold that handle with one hand (sail totally flagged out) and ride just the foil on the wave. You need a bit larger foil to do that and smaller sails. We're using Hotsails MicroFreak kid sails in sizes 2.8m and 3.8m mostly. Thanks, I agree foiling on a wave is such fun. Looks like you are having lots of fun in the video. As you know there are many ways to have fun foiling waves. I do foil the waves with with sails down to 2.8m to 4.4m (I am 85 kg) but have the most fun when I have enough wind to water start easily so I can have enough power to carve hard heel side when going downwind down the line. Jeff, the Hot Sails designer, recommend the freestyle sails I use because of the high aspect, tight leach, light weight as being the best sail he makes for getting up on a windfoil with the smallest size. I have windfoiled with bigger foils on waves and find they are too slow especially on bigger swells and not as lively. I have also windfoiled on waves with the sail flagged but find I can get more power into the carves by sheeting in with the sail. Carving with some speed and getting good G's is what I love. However this works best when the wind is about 90 degrees to the waves. IMHO if you prefer foil surfing with the sail flagged you should try Wingfoiling not to say flagging the sail is not fun, its just not my favourite way to go. Or if you are interested you can check out what I am trying to do, not that I am any good at it I am just having a blast doing it. czcams.com/video/9YBhrDznFio/video.html

      @@adrianhessels839 Thanks for the link man. That video is fantastic! I watched it a couple weeks ago. My wife was watching your video with the sea turtles a couple days ago and she was so excited. Wing foiling is fun, but it's a lot more work than WWF in our onshore conditions here on the Great Lakes and not nearly as efficient. We have mostly onshore conditions, and the wings fall out of the sky on these fast waves when you're going with the wind. Holding the wing up is a lot of work. The wing works ok in side shore conditions, but WWF is still more efficient. With the sail attached to the board on the wind foil it's so much easier, fluid and elegant. But it's all super fun!!! The wings are popular here. You look so great out there. There are not many people in world riding wind foils on waves. Kevin Pritchard has done a little. Balz Mueller too. There's a guy in Australia who made a video trying some things. But you look pretty darn good at it. Stoked to see someone else into it. Please keep making videos. We've been enjoying them.

      Ahhhh the wing having to be held up being a hassle makes sense Eric. You're right I can't figure out why more folks that have windsurfed don't try WWF it is easier than most realize and so much fun. Everyone in Maui seems to go to Wingfoiling, I thinks its because there are now so many expert wingfoilers making it look easy and excellent schools to learn from. The windsurfers that I have tutotored windfoiling usually get up and flying on big foils, big boards, no straps and small sails in under 30 minutes. However, I would say that Wingers can learn transitions easier because they don't have to switch their feet. What I wish is some of the Pro's would show folks what can be done WWF so more people would try it; until then we will have to try and show folks how much fun can be had.

So I can have a blast on those 3ft+ waves/swells I would don't even bother trying to ride on a windsurfer. Just can't figure out why more windsurfers are not giving wave windfoiling a try?

      Hey Corey thanks for the link on how to rig a sail for WWF. I agree 100% as it lets you use the smallest sail possible. I have switched from wave sails (except for nukes days) to freestyle sails still rigged deep. The leaches are even tighter and they have better low end, are super light with shorter booms. It looks like you guys/gals are having a blast "surfing" the waves. And are really good at it! The 180 degree turns are pure surfing with little to no power in the sail. I have enjoyed this style on downwinders with the sail flagged. I also love riding up and down a swell in one direction but using power in the sail to help carve the turns. However I prefer to carve the 180 degree turns on a wave with power in the sail, not better, just a different kind of fun. But I do need the wind to be about 90 degrees to the waves. The closest I got to those conditions on the great lakes was after a bit of a wind shift at Ipperwash but that was decades ago windsurfing. Have fun foiling, Oh I support my local shaper as well - Roberts.

    Hello. Very good videos. One question I do the same at 70 kg, foil 1600 cm2 and small sails but I can't turn my board easily. Which could be the problem? The length of my board (239 cm), or my stab could be too big (51 cm x 330 cm2)? thank you so much

    • @adrianhessels839
      @adrianhessels839 Před 2 lety

      Hey Tate I am still figuring wind wave foiling out myself but I can try to help. I am 85kg and using a 1300cm2 higher aspect foil on a board about 200cm long. I think you are looking at the right changes to your equipment to help you carve easier on a wave but I would add that a sightly bigger sail size with aggressive carving might also help. I originally found that the my carves often had me finishing the turn too far ahead of the wave. Then I would have to turn up the wave and/or wait for it before I could complete my next carve. This was easy going heel side up wind but hard going downwind on toeside. So I became more aggressive in the carves by using the power in the sail to help me push harder on the board. I prefer to have a sail big enough that I can easily water start (the video is on an underpowered day). Now my toe side turn is like sheeting in on a jibe and the bigger sail (4.4m freestyle is still my big sail) helps me carve harder on heel side; as I am heading down wind going into the turn. I am also getting better at pressing with both feet on the heel side carve which also helps carve sharper. On the equipment side, board weight especially ahead of the mast track does make a difference. But I found that my custom board is very light and loosing a few inches makes only a small difference in how lively it is. Bigger differences can be made with the foil and stabilizer or even by moving the sail mast back a little. Hope this help

      @@tate2863 You are welcome. Stabilizers make a huge difference. I have tried the SAB 450 (326cm2) and 483(316cm2) on my 683, 790 & 945. The specs on the 2 stabilizers look close but they are very different, generally the higher aspect 483 is much looser and the 450 is more forgiving with more drag. And when I tried the 483 with the 790 it was like foiling on marbles, just didn't work for me. Its usually some sort of compromise. So I suggest doing as much research as you can!
