    hihihi!!! i loved ur video, im a first time viewer. just wish u were a bit more critical + showed more passages from the book as examples (still, great video, kept my attention, subscribed.) i mostly read classics, and ive loved them since i was 13 (attributed to the decorative prose in them, usually love the work of aesthetes bcos of this) but i do want to see myself get more into y/a, n/a and books that aren't a hundred years old. i prioritise well-written-ness, i can read a well written book with a shit plot, but usually not the opposite. most of the books ive found seem to have the opposite, or are just very bad in both categories (sometimes so bad i cannot stop reading them). i also love romances in theory, but i get very icked by shitty writing so i cant really find any i enjoy. so, i hope i can find books i like from this channel-- and ill definitely check out the grief of stones. i havent read it yet BUT a friend recommended earthlings by sayaka murata to me, and maybe you'll like it aswell ?

    @amysrambles6748 Před 4 dny

    With Amina, the preface very much sounds like the author doesn't trust their own skills at getting the message across without Pre-warning us. 'this was one of the strangest books I ever read' - I'll take it 😂 on a reread I really like how Tippy shows us that sometimes we have to work on being our best selves and it's ok that our instincts aren't always to make the right choice. Sometimes we have to choose not to headbutt everyone even if it would be the easiest(most satisfying?) option.

    One of my favourite ways to discover new books to try is to look up themes and tropes I enjoy. Quite often I'll find themed recommendation lists on CZcams, or via Google. I also use the site TV Tropes sometimes by looking up a favourite book, then searching through the list of tropes assigned to it and clicking on those pages to find more books featuring those tropes. (It can definitely be a rabbit hole though, I've lost hours at a time to trawling through TV Tropes!) I've found some of my absolute favourite books that way, including plenty of older or underhyped ones.

  • @dougsundseth6904
    @dougsundseth6904 Před 13 dny

    I enjoy listening to what other people like, but I haven't found that to be a good source of recommendations for me. I find individual ratings nearly useless. Ratings are bimodal for too many people, either 1-star or 5-star, and for reasons that make no sense to me. I've seen way too many 5-star ratings that talk about how the book is OK, has a problem with the plot, and has characters that are neither likable nor believable. And (fewer) 1-star reviews that seem to be occasioned by some trigger (bad language, wrong protagonist age, or whatever) that is entirely irrelevant to me. And aggregate ratings for small sample sizes are nearly random, while for large sample sizes seem to be driven by publication date and hype more than by anything related to the writing (by my lights, anyway). What I've found works well for me: For new authors to me, I find that browsing Audible sales for things that sound interesting gives me a decent (money+effort)/reward ratio. I get some duds, quite a few decent to good books, and some brilliant stuff that I never expected. I also tend to read the excerpt on Amazon or listen to the sample on Audible for new authors. And I definitely read substantive reviews, but for content, not so much for ratings. For existing authors, I keep a rated list of next books in series based on how much I've liked the series so far. This has been quite effective for me. In cases where I haven't rated my desire to buy the next book, looking at my old reviews of books from the same author has been really useful as well. In large part, I do this because some authors/publishers are really good at writing blurbs that sound _great_ for books that ... are not great for me. Part of why this works for me is that I go through a lot of books (193 books so far this year), and I don't mind getting books that I rate 3s. For me, a "3" is good enough that it was enjoyable in the moment, even if not likely to make any sort of long-term impact. So trying something cheap is both low-risk and economical. If you're only reading 10-20 books per year, it's probably worth doing more research of the sort you recommend here.

    Thank you for mentioning us! To clarify about the personalized recommendations: when you import your books from Goodreads to MeetNewBooks, we carry over your ratings, so you won't need to rate your books again. If you have a large collection, it may take a few minutes for the personalized recommendations to update. Additionally, we organize recommendations by shelves, so if you have separate shelves for fantasy, romance, fiction, or non-fiction, we'll generate recommendations for those too.

    • @ChloeFrizzle
      @ChloeFrizzle Před 13 dny

      Yep! Don't worry, I did all that. It was the quality of those resulting recommendations that I was disappointed in. The recommendations were a lot of popular books, similar to/based on many of the books that I had rated three stars. If I wanted popular books related to books I already thought were mediocre, I could just find those anywhere 😉

    • @meetnewbooks3865
      @meetnewbooks3865 Před 13 dny

      @@ChloeFrizzle Gotcha! We tweak our recommendation engine to balance between giving a wider range of options and offering closer matches, even if it means fewer suggestions. This trade-off can lead to different results based on what someone has already read. Thanks again for the mention 😊

    The average Goodreads rating is something to consider, but there are some books where this just doesn’t work for me. Especially if it is a book that is much older than Goodreads. If the audience is far more into the contemporary books of the genre then sometimes, if it is a very old book, it almost would be more fair to consider it different genre altogether. A 2024 SF romance is a far cry From A Canticle For Lebowitz. For someone like me, who likes a little bit of old and a little bit of the new, I have to keep that in mind.

    I have a very specific experience with Mirror Dance. I read it when I was a teenager and when certain climatic event happened I was apparently so distraught that I stopped reading the book and immediately forgot that I didn't finish it. I continued to read the series for the like next ten years and only discovered that peculiar trick of my memory when I decided to re-read the whole series in English (previously I read it in my native language) and was quite surprised that I had zero recollection about book plot after this certain moment. Bujold's work is just apparently that amazing that it managed to inflict a minor PTSD moment on a impressionable young me.

    Ah I'm now excited and nervous that you're going to be reading The Imaginary Corpse! I really hope you like it. I am currently on a one woman mission to spread the joy that is Tippy!
