Sodium-ion batteries in the USA. Beating China at their own game!
China has cornered the market in green energy transition technologies in recent years, and very effectively gained control of raw material supply chains so any other country has to go through them to get things done. There is one notable exception though. Sodium. It's so ubiquitous that even China can't monopolise it as a commodity. And that means European and US battery makers have spotted a chink in the Great Dragon's armour!

The best solution ive seen is a mountain slope with a long rail line. Basically the cars are hooked up to a special track that delivers the electricity similar to a subway car. The wheels have electric generators on them and a huge amount of weight with rocks. During peak energy they push the cars to the top of the mountain where the cars sit. Then at night they slowly roll down hill delivering something like 95% efficiency. Now the nice part about this is that hydro power has the risk of evaoprating meaning anything over a 5% evaporation means its not as efficient. Its also instantly available and can meet the exact energy needs. I also believe that eventually you could have a sytem which allows for energy to be harvested by moving large amounts or rock to the bottom of the track. Basically you could find an ideal location with a huge amount of loose rock which would allow this to be harvested for electric power. Giving the potential to make electricity simply by moving a massive amount of weight onto these rail cars and letting them roll down the hill and then be emptied into a quarry or canyon. Theoretically you could be generating electricity on demand simply by having mining equipment move rocks onto rail cars and letting their weight rolling fown hill produce electricity. I think it offers a great opportunity for old mines to be filled as a way to produce more revenue and be an environmentally friendly way to produce electricity. Its also fascinating to think of electric powered machinery that would make the entire system carbon neutral. There are mines all across the country that have been abandoned. And have massive amounts of removed material sititng outside of them. The potential to use those old rails to produce electricity by refilling the mines is like a second gold rush.

Sodium is definitely the way to go for gridscale and domestic storage, or will be when the price comes down. You cab get Lion cells in low numbers for £0.11 per w/h of storage. Sodium should come in at half that. So 30kWh of domestic storage would have about £1800 in cells in it. It's about £800 for the casing and electronics so £5200 with Vat and markup. Worth having at that cost.

China is interested in that piece of land and doesn't want Indian interference. The Lithium market has artificially crashed and the Ambani -Adani duo have suspended their mining plans. Meanwhile the Indian government is reluctant to grant statehood to Ladakh because the federal government will lose stake on mining rights. Ladakh is in a political limbo. Sodium-ion would be great for energy storage at home - none (or far less of) of the ignition problems that lithium-ion has, and hopefully far less hazardous off-gassing and smoke in the event of fire. As for EV vehicles... You seriously need an upgraded energy supply. The current grids are not up to snuff. If they were, even the limited amount of charging stations would all be charging at full speed instead of so many times charging at lower voltages/amperages/whatever.

Well let's not forget the Aquion battery which was a sodium battery that got popular years ago. There are a good number of homeowners in America that have been screwed. They purchased that battery thinking it was safe and environmentally sound and it has failed and the company went out of business. I worked for an inverter manufacturer and we found that the sodium battery did not deliver current fast enough to handle large inductive loads. If a pump or air conditioner came on The voltage would collapse and the inverter would shut down on low voltage and then a moment later everything would come back up and run again. Hundreds if not thousands of homeowners are still furious to this day because the company did not honor any solutions to the problem. I am hopeful that the technology has improved and that the internal resistance problem of the battery has been resolved.
