It's time to ditch microSD
Are microSD cards days numbered on Raspberry Pi 5? Raspberry Pi has a new M.2 HAT for the Pi 5, but there are many others. Which one's best?

Completely agree that NVMe M.2 is the way forward. However, anything over 2TB requires some hoops to jump through to get it to boot due to the MBR limitations in the default Raspberry Pi boot images.

Here's the thing: While the price per TB might be similar, decent NVMes _start_ at 250GB. I rarely if ever need that sort of capacity for the kind of applications where a Pi is good enough. I can get a high quality 32GB microSD card for quarter the price of the cheapest decent NVMe. And that's ignoring the fact that the cheapest NVMes are 2280 and you have to pay a pretty heavy premium for the smaller ones required by the official adapter. Oh, and you also have to buy the adapter. Sure, there are some applications where an NVMe makes sense, but using microSD cards on the Pi is far from over.

Ha! I still have my MDD G4 that I bought as a demo from Apple Australia back in the day. The power supply fans were objectionable back then too, and I dropped about $300 on a couple of German Vertex fans that you could buy as a kit. Just nuts, the money I spent on this thing when it was new. I did run 4 drives and 2 DVD drives in it for a while, just because I could. Mine has a very cool satellite simulator on it, shows all the orbits and the footprints in real time... It was pretty intense back then and we always felt like our backs were against the wall fighting off the Windows crowd, but it was worth it and I think it was a good fight.

I'll have to disagree.. there's no argument that nvme drives are faster, yet it's not much faster than a SATA SSD 800mb/s... really? is it only using one PCIe lane? M.2 devices inherently do not have an simple way of being removed and swapping out and with a good locking mechanism so they don't fall out. I don't even know if the M.2 spec has a hot swapping support like SDcards do since after all it's a direct connection to the PCIe bus.

The MicroSD was wrong in the first place. It should have been just the SD card if wanted for something easy and simple to backup and replace on the quick manner, or test various different software systems. MicroSD is meant for phones, tiny digital cameras, tiny electronic devices, but not for a dedicated computer like a NAS. We should have kept MicroSD on every single phone. So that we can easily just swap and move data to another without cables and without even having device On. For tiny cameras, like Panasonic GM1, it should have gotten dual MicroSD slots (two circuits for writing/reading etc etc). But more importantly, the MicroSD would have made possible to take card from camera and put it in a phone, access files and back to camera. Same is with 5.25", 3.5" and 2.5" drives on PC. Everything should have been from the start designed to be without cables, just push to slot and have it connected there. So when you need to manage data, just pull drive out and new in. No cables.

the raspberry pi is like the 'Hello Fresh' business model. The kit is meant to give people a taste of something, and if they like it, keep selling it to them. The Pi is similar in this respect because; it is an easy way to get into the hobby without trying to figure out all the hardware stuff themselves. A few hundred bucks is not that bad for a hobby, and if the customer does not like the hobby, there is not a tremendous loss in giving it up.

The problem with Ubiquiti that I don't like is that they don't support ONVIF, so you have to buy their hardware. The commentary says "well, they don't make money on the Protect software on their UDM, so they want to sell you cameras to profit. But my response to that Is that I'd be happy to may Ubiquiti for an ONVIF license to help pay for the development.

When the debt crisis reaches its peak, and every single inhabitant of this planet has sacrificed 15-30% (hell, it might be 80% or 180% or 1800% by the time they let it break) of their buying power and they have thrust this debt on the 7th generation from us… The demand we make is for them to make open source all technology that was created in such a short time by maintaining an era of hyper-debt. The Money Question which went into full swing in 1873 because Japan and China were on the silver standard and the US and UK despite all their machinery could not keep up, and now they are printing money as fast as they possibly can hoping that technology will save us from the calamity we made for ourselves and is ironically best solved by free and open information and technology to independent people across the globe to use it as best serves their needs, and as they communicate, they come up with better and better long term solutions. Inflation and technology have gone hand in hand for over 200 years, and the sooner we stop choosing temporary expedient solutions in one or the other, the sooner we will have rapid and sustainable growth after a short period of pain for those hoarding all of the commodities and intellectual property to not be stuck as one of the poor miserable masses caught in a boiling cauldron of ignorance due to the greed of a few who had one really great idea that profited them enough to buy up everyone else’s great idea… Certain Intellectual property should NOT be transferable to a single entity for the purposes of profit. Inheritance is one thing, but to sell advances in technology that has the potential to divide like budding and create exponential advances for mankind are an entirely different thing. We should instead have a system in which worthy bidders are democratically selected, and several competitors should be created from such an auction. If you need to sell, or it’s time to sell, wouldn’t you rather it be held in escrow, so that you get your cash out, and the world receives your gift?

ok, I fell for the clickbait, this is PURELY a PI video the humble microSD is not worth ditching yet, it still works for cameras and phone expansion and even in most retro uses like the Wii or similar in fact if we are talking about "one card to rule them all" I would stick with microSD, it has the performance that pretty much any swappable low-write application needs(notice I did not fully exclude writes, just limited in speed and number of re-writes) if you need faster cards(like for 4k/8k video recording) I suspect that we should simply adopt cf-express cf-express is basically NVME in a hot-swap case(literally passive adapters that turn m.2 nvme into cf-express are a thing) and NVME is basically all the speed anyone currently needs or likely will ever need before we ditch silicon-based tech entirely for something more sci-fi(assuming you have a gen-4 x4 drive and some way to saturate that link) so yeah, NVME is great, but remember the cost of an sd card at the same size vs an NVME drive? yeah, if your application is fine with SD don't bother with NVME I myself wish for a bunch of CF-express type drives(multiple slots in my desktop+server, and a few stuck-on slots on my laptop(maybe inside the bottom case somehow)) for me to take my games drive and stuff with me, and be able to sync data at max speed to a raid that dumps a snapshot onto a cheap HDD I can shove in a fireproof pelican case to store at my parents house for the 3-2-1 backup rule I would not trust any solid-state storage for archival use, the data decay is just too fast for safe storage if you must go cheap, it turns out a cold magnetic storage drive(ie unpowered) stored in a cool dry place(like a mountain cave vault, a real thing) is the best solution, if you need less expensive than a pelican full of brand new hard drives you just loaded with periodic backups and stored in your parents cool dry basement is safe enough plus with them always asking where their photos are you could set up a NAS that simply shows up on their phone, and you can use that as part of teh 3-2-1 backup rule, then the pelican gets shoved in the basement of your grandparents or similar
