Barry Milburn and Colin Russell show how to make a 1952 FX Holden win. Colin talks engines :)
Long time mates Barry and Colin made Barrys FX fly. Barry discusses how he drove the car and Colin explains what he did to the FXs engine. Please Subscribe!
Barrys Holden passion shows through when he buys back his FJ ute after it was flooded.
Colin a legendary engine builder also explains how he built Alan Jones first race car (a go cart) with Otto Stone while working for Stan Jones.
Colin discusses the success with Larry Ormsby in the XR and XW GT Falcons over the quarter mile.
Colin talks about being poached by Fords Al Turner to work at the infamous Lot 6 on the factory Falcon GTs leading to building the engines for the 1973 Bathurst 1000 win by Allan Moffat and Ian Geoghegan in the Ford XA Falcon GT Hardtop. He talks about Allan Moffats major rollover at Phillip Island which destroyed the XA GT Hardtop.
Colin recalls a time at Calder Thunderdome. He was on duty and escorting Jayne Torvill around while Christopher Dean was competing in an Auscar event in a Holden provided by Larry Perkins. Christopher had a high impact crash and was lucky to escape serious injury.
Barry and Colin still see each other regularly and are the best of mates.

@@user-ot7ec4uc3g A mates older brother bought one of these in the early '60's. Sold to him as a '51 model, but we later found out it was more likely a '48 model. It had narrow rear springs, but lots of leaves, no idea how many. Lever action shocks all round, which were part of the upper control arms at the front. Although, his had a telescopic conversion where they just left the front ones in place, and added the telescopic ones to brackets in front of the springs somehow. The rear ones didn't tilt inwards, but were straight up and down, and leaned forward. (Or backwards, can't remember). It also had a crappy aftermarket front swaybar, where one end (or both) kept popping out of the mounts. It had a toggle switch under the tail light housing which turned the light off and on, although it was always left on and he turned it on in the normal manner. Apparently at one time, it was illegal to be able to turn the tail light off from inside the car. The door lock plungers were at the back of the rear doors, not at the front as in later models. Later, another mate bought a '53 model known as the 'Air Ride'. It was still an FX body, but had FJ suspension, i.e. wide, four leaf rear springs, and telescopic shocks all round

So what's the point every other car company want's to make cars as cheaply as possible. Holdens were the best made Australian cars. Fords all squeek because they don't put as many welds to save money. Valiants had wishy washy steering boxes and poor build quality. Mitsubishi are a bits of s#$%y. Nissan and Toyota were the best Australian assembled cars. Vw's ok But Mowog were the worst no reliability

@@MichaelEnright-gk6ycnot very carmaker built cars as cheaply as possible. If you compare the metallurgical mix of GM and other American cars, metal parts to Toyota, you’ll discover that Toyota has a much more durable composite. Same with Toyota plastics. Toyota wiring looms are also better quality as is their waterproofing around components. Toyota also have more in-house accessory build whereas the Americans and most of the Europeans outsource their accessories and a percentage of standard items. The big difference came with electronics. The Japanese, and in particular Toyota, evolved to get it right. GM and Co. are still grappling with build quality in their electronics systems. A simple recommendation comes from middle eastern warlords and terror groups operating in desert conditions. On the tailgates of their vehicles you’ll pretty much see one word…Toyota.

The term fx was introduced by morons who did not understand the code. 48-215 was the production number of number 1 Holden, and became the model number within the Holden company. Minor things like speedo colour, knob colour, and even major things are no reliable guide to when a GM-H car was produced or what model it is supposed to be. Sometimes they had an excess of parts when the next model started in production. So GM-H would install the previous model parts in any cars earmarked for government fleet contracts. I once owned an ex Post Office EK. Not only did it have that revolting red colour, it had vacuum wipers. I soon changed both. Dealer-sold EK's had a slightly larger motor. Mine had the smaller motor from the previous model - and, no, the serial numbers proved nobody had swapped it. Government departments sometimes would actually request a smaller motor - something buyers of old Fords should look out for - Ford was more flexible and more keen to get government business.

I think the first Title is the best as well. Then if I was him I would include it in the Forward : the poem stone walls a prison do not make. Because that was some of his inspiration. I feel he wants some recognition of those words, I think too long for the title, but excellent as part of the Forward. His wife was a sterling hostess.
