DIY How to easily preserve wood at home...better than pressure treated lumber
This video shows how we preserve our wood using the burning method and then sealing with an oil based urethane coating. This is an ancient Japanese technique that is still being used today to preserve wood products instead of chemical pressure treating.

    I like the idea, but did it save you any money after buying the sealer? Did you need to do the whole post, or just the part that goes in the ground? Its usually the point where the post meets the ground that rots. Cool method though, hope it works!

    • @timberstoneranch
      @timberstoneranch Před 11 hodinami

      I think we saved quite a bit of money because these are rather large Timbers so they are expensive. The sealer is a large can that will be able to do the whole wood shed. The shed is 28 feet long by 6 feet wide and 7 feet tall. We did the whole thing because it looks really good honestly plus it should last for a long long time.

    I'm also in Central Ontario - did you guys find you still went through 4 bush cords this winter with it being mild? Also - besides the regular weekly maintenance, have you found you have had to replace any parts on your boiler (fan, etc.)? Would also love to hear your thoughts on the Heatmaster as a brand. Thank you!

    • @timberstoneranch
      @timberstoneranch Před 4 měsíci

      This year we went through 3 bush cords. In a colder winter we go through 4 to 5 cords. We have not had to replace anything yet. The dealer told me that the fan and pumps should last for about 5 years. Headmaster is good so far but I had an issue with their technical support. I had an issue staring the boiler the is year because the there was some creosote buildup in one of the fans and it was stuck. I called them and they did not call me back until 4 business days later. I did not like that very much especially if it was an urgent matter. We do have propane backup but was expecting better from customer service. It was actually the dealer that took my call right away and helped me diagnose the problem. The only reason why I chose headmaster really is because the dealer is about half hour away from me. I did not want to buy something that would be difficult to service if I had to or could not do something myself. I would recommend getting one that is closest to your house. From the research that I did before buying, they are all pretty much the same when it comes to the conventional ones, the gasifiers are a little bit different and headmaster is the only one that was EPA approved at the time. Let me know if you have any more questions, I am happy to help. Please check out our other boiler videos, you may find them helpful.

    I’ve been though it all when it comes to wood heat. Your much better off going with a good free standing wood stove. Them outside wood burners are no good. They are big wood hogs and take all your time. Very expensive to install. Take that money and put in a new chimney for that free standing stove. You can also cook on it. Free standing stoves have come a long way. They use 20% of the wood for the same size your heating.

      Hello, yes we have sold the gator RSX as it was more of a racing performance vehicle rather than dual purpose and utility. I agree that the gator is too loud and not safe for kids. We do love the Yamaha for its space and it’s performance. The price of the Yamaha too is much more attractive for what you get. The Yamaha was almost $7,000 cheaper as we have it configured. I would recommend you go look at one in detail and perhaps try one out. We still have other gators on the property but they are the 550 cross over model which is again more of a utility vehicle, as we do love our John Deere over here. I hope this helps and good luck.

There are mounting packages available at some of the bigger online tractor guys, but you could also mount some unistrut or similar and mount the mirror to that at whatever height suits you. I love that they burn less wood but in 14 yrs with an old school boiler I did one weld repair and dumped the ash pan in a pile once a week. Very low tech. It made a world of difference in the tight spaces where i have to move my snow. I also ended up putting a Curtis Cab on mine but that isnt for everyone. A little thing i've learned over the years that makes the rear blower a little easier on long days: I move my seat up a little and turn sideways in the seat and run the pedal with my left foot. George Washington used to way out the yay and the nay when making important decisions. I think the gasification unit is the best choice for me.

      He was a great man. I hope you found the video helpful to make your decision easier. Please check out our other videos regarding the boiler as we have a gasification unit as well and are happy so far.

    Wow 25k buys a lot of propane, and as for ROI break even you are talking 10 years at best if nothing goes wrong. Also, not every building benefits from the lack of mess of an outdoor wood burner. The more I research these things the more I think a propane boiler with radian floor heating is the better option and I can heat my extra buildings with a wood burning stove. Thanks for the video.

      They are expensive to begin with and they do come with really good warranty from different manufacturers, however they are definitely not good for everyone and every situation. Our propane bill was just under $6,000 a year to heat everything so this is working out for us so far. It also depends on propane price in different geographic locations. The rate in our area is over a dollar per litre once you include the carbon and other taxes. It would equal out to around $4/gallon in US.

      @ironsales5669 • Yeah , but he said that he heats MULTIPLE buildings with it , not just his house , and can also heat the swimming pool water which gives you a extra month of swimming in the spring and a extra month in the Fall , Propane doesn't do that ! I have a inside Wood Furnace 150,000BTU and my heating bill is around $75 dollars . Not a month ! But for the entire Winter ! or around $7 to $10 per month

      That is awesome. That is what you call real independence. Love it.
