Create Your Own All Purpose Hard Pastel Travel Box

Five years ago I started using a seventy two piece Holbein set as hard pastel travel set. I have wooden boxes that hold pastels but I found they were heavy and took up a lot of room. I wanted something that was light and would fit on my 9x12 Guerrilla Painter box and could slip into my backpack. I found the set of 72 Holbein’s fit perfectly onto the box so I decided to see if I could make a tra...

You condensed down my drawing class lecture of 2 hours into a simple 3 minute video, thank you so much I finally understand and get the concept! TIme to practice :)
@@InactiveAccount66 I’m so glad you found this video helpful 😊
Thank
How would I apply this technique if the object is near me? I can't extend my arm fully :/
If you can keep your arm bent at a consistent angle it will work. The reason extending the arm is so effective is because you always have the same distance and your measurements will always be consistent. Hope that helps!
Thanks ❤😊
You're welcome 😊. I saw a question where you asked about the apex, the apex is where you put the point on circle. Hope that helps!
Are you any relation to the painter Zoltan Szabo, just curious
What a wonderful explanation of this sublime painting.. this made my day, thank you
Thank you :)
Vianna, what pastel paper do you use?
I am using UArt 400 grit in this video. I also love Lux Archival and Pastel Mat
@@ViannaSzabo thank you so much
Love your textured pastel painting. Would Watercolor Ground also work for this using pastel ( it’s great using it for texture with watercolors).
Thank you! Watercolor ground could work but it is not as gritty as the clear gesso. It would be an interesting experiment to compare them.
Great demo on color mixing, very instructional!
Thank you, Cynthia :)
I love painting Michigan, bring on the grey ✍️
Thank you SOOOO much, i'm an aspie and the other 9+ minutes videos here in YT just wouldn't get a way into my head. Your way of explaining pretty much made it all click in my head, so - for that - i'm really grateful. <3 :p
So glad you found it helpful 😊
Wow.......such an impressive effect....I use oils and you commented that using paper towel on pastel was analogous to using large brush with oils in terms of brush marks.....but one would not achieve same effect overall with oils as with pastels to the same degree I assume?
Your right, the effect of this is similar to a squeegee for oils
Hello how to draw on the right side of the brain gang
Always fascinating to watch you produce masterpieces.
Thank you, Norman 😊
Very welcome Vianna. 😊
Good video, very clear information and practical way to visualize the values, thank you very much :)
Glad it was helpful :)
Thank you so much for posting this video. I have run into a creative rut, and was searching for something to help me break out of it! I've done lots of pastel paintings with a big area of foreground grasses, and have been struggling to get enough contrast and variety in my strokes. I will try this technique!
Large areas of foreground can be intimidating. Just a bit of texture should make a difference. Happy painting, Janet!
Beautiful show!!!
A beautiful exhibit juried by Kathleen Newman! Thanks to Vianna Szabo for an excellent video showcasing the work of the members of GLPS.
Thank you to kathleen Newman and to the videographer /artist Vianna Szabo for this video.

I think we both love David Leffel ! Very well done BTW.
Yes, when I found this horse statue I immediately thought of him 😊
the difference between the before and after paintings was significant. Liked learning what needed improvement and how to do it.
A critique with a trusted artist friend is such a wonderful way to grow. It takes my work to a new level every time.

Thank you, Jul, I appreciate the feedback.
Excellent lesson! This is the right point
Thank you!
there are not many youtube videos about edges so I appreciate this one.
This was an early one on Patreon and one of my favorites. I always think of edges as the narrative, telling people what is important and what is supporting
Thank you teacher ❤
You are so welcome :)
Some people use rope or thread. Any idea!?
Windshield Viper - Thats a great way to explain ! Good work
How can I transfer the angle from life to a horizontal surface like a sketchbook laying on a table?
Easiest way is to hold your drawing vertically, transfer the angle, then continue working flat.
Gorgeous
Thank you!

You are welcome, glad you found it helpful :)
Is the last part of finishing this painting in your Patreon site? (I looked but couldn't find it). Thanks.. the Gesso looks like a great idea!
I think so, this is a very small painting so there is not a lot of detail. I have so many videos and lessons on Patreon it is sometimes hard for me to remember. Use the tags, mark making, pastel, landscape, or painting materials to help you find it. The gesso is a great addition to add dimension to a flat medium like pastel.
Hi I'm an oil painter just starting in pastels - ready to buy my first pastels and join your Patreon. Will your Patreon channel offer advice on which pastels to buy? Thanks... I'm excited!
Hi John, Yes it does, it also shows how I organize them and create a travel box from different brands. One set I can suggest for first time pastel painters is the Faber-Castell box of 72 soft pastels. It costs around $30 and is readily available through mail order art stores and amazon. It has a full value range and nice range of primary, secondary and ishy colors. I am currently using it to teach a group of oil painters pastel. They may not be archival but it is a great set to try them out to see how you like it. I do offer on my website a video you can stream showing basic pastel strokes and application. That is on my website under "Videos". My website is viannaszabo.com. Hope that helps!
@@ViannaSzabo thanks much. I'll be joining you on Patreon tomorrow! Woohoo! Would you discourage me from starting with the Unison 120 half sticks along with 6 assorted Ludwig sets? I'm an oil painter and worried I'll no longer be able to color mix on my palette and am thinking I will be happier with a nice hue/shade selection... Am I thinking correctly?
I'm interested in studying pastels with you. How much of your Patreon channel is devoted to pastel (vs other mediums). Thanks!
Hi John, There is quite a bit of content on pastels on my Patreon site. I have been posting weekly for almost four years so there are a lot of posts. There is also an index where you can look up pastel posts and skip the other mediums. Many of the lessons are not medium specific but deal with a general concept which I illustrate in different mediums. I also offer private lessons via zoom if you are ever interested in working one on one and want lessons tailored to your needs in interests. You can contact me through a reply here or visit my website-viannaszabco.com.
Sounds good.. I'll give it a go . Guess best to wait until first of month - Patreon still hasn't figured out how to do mid-month billing - Patreon is a dreadful platform but I'll put up with it for now! Thank you
Brilliant ❤️
Thank you!
Love the idea of using the lid!
