C3 Corvette Window Regulator Spring Installation
In this video, I showed the process for installing a window regulator spring on the driver side window regulator in a 1971 Corvette. The methods I use in this video are strictly of my own design and should not be taken as advice. This video is for entertainment purposes only, and not meant to be replicated, as the processes depicted here may result in injury.

What goop is that ?
I had one on my side wall of the tire and the physics don't make sense seemed intentional to me
I had the same thing happen the lens fell out I will replace mine in a week when the part arrives.
I'm disappointed. Not even a drop of blood
@@noccis3448 😂 No, but I may have peed myself a little, if that’s any consolation.
I think you’ll be fine. Like you said, chances are the top is going to be down the majority of the time anyway. I use mine twice a year. lol
@@StreetersGarage Yeah - and I think I’m strong enough to roll the window up. When I can’t, it’s time to stop driving! 😅
buy a new regulator. They're cheap.
@@bigguy8586 Easier said than done. $150-$200 if you can find one.
I had the same problem. I could not find new manual regulators. I ended up buying a function old one. My spring was in, but she is bound up and I don’t know why. I’m holding on to the original in hopes of figuring out why it’s binding
@@vettegreaser6590 I don’t know much, but if the main crank is binding, it could be at the gears.
If you have a place near you that sells steel and does fabricating you could go there and try to find a piece of scrap pipe that the spring will fit inside of and cut a slot in the bottom edge of it so the hook has a place to go. Then either weld another pipe across the top or drill a hole through both sides at the top for a tee handle.
@@sparksandgritgarage555 Yeah, this is what I was thinking too. I may have a socket that I could sacrifice, which would allow me to use a breaker bar. We’ll see. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@thedrivewayC3 No problem at all. I hope you figure it out and stay safe.
@@sparksandgritgarage555 Thanks. I was able to get a half-turn on the spring with just some vice grips, but I believe it needs a half-turn more, based on what I see and feel on the RH side.
@@thedrivewayC3 I agree. That appears to be a design that requires 1 full turn to properly preload. A 16.5” pair of channel locks would probably get the job done but I would sacrifice a big 3/4” drive socket or a 4x4 hub socket before a finger lol.
@@sparksandgritgarage555 I just installed the spring with a notched socket. Got a little over 1/2 turn, which will be good enough. There’s no way I would go for more as IMO it would get exponentially more dangerous. 😅
What does front bumper cover mean? Is this just a cover
@@MeowMiata yes, the bumper is aluminum and this covers it.
@@thedrivewayC3Thsnk you!
You crank it down, install the spring, the spring is designed to assist in going up
@@kennethwoolever5054 Yes, but the issue is that the spring needs to have pre-load, so it needs to be installed with tension and there’s no way to do that without a specific process. Doesn’t work to move the regulator to the “up” position and put the spring in.
@thedrivewayC3 put the regulater in a vice, and using a clamp over the center, then vice grips turn the spring twice a catch the holding palle
@@kennethwoolever5054 How do you turn the spring exactly? Where do you grab it? I thought it might be easiest to hook the end on the tab and turn the center, but you’re recommending the opposite?
The few times I've had to reset the springs I've used a very large pair of good quality channel locks, set the center of the spring first, lock onto the outer ring and carefully twist it ONE revolution and set the outside. If you feel uneasy I'd recommend wearing leather gloves and eye protection. Good luck brother!
There's a tool for that...
You wind it up after attaching it
@@Lamar072 Thanks. It’s going to a local shop.
I have never thought of messing with the spring, I found a used regulator for about 30 bucks at the salvage yard..
@@jonnyb_good395 It’s the only thing that needs to be installed on a perfectly good Reg. No salvage yards around here & shipping is too expensive.
Buy a complete regulator. Not worth it.
@@noccis3448 There’s a local place that will install the spring. They work on classics all the time.
@@thedrivewayC3 Better them than me!
@@noccis3448 Actually-You were right. I took it to two shops. The first one had no idea & the second one said “Just buy a new one.” 😅
My tech lost 2 fingers messing with his first manual regulator. I told him to put it in a vice first but you know how folks know it all.
@@Ti___ny_______ Yeah - Best to not mess with it. I like my fingers where they are.
You heat it up very hard and attempts to warp back to its original shape
Dr Color Chip would have worked much better and been easier.
@@BillRaiola Who knows, bit thanks for the info.
I have been following your progress for a while now. I enjoy your content and have a lot from your experience. BTW. I am the original owner of 1978 Vette
I very much like your attention to detail.
@@garymcdougle-82 Thanks. Trying to get things off to a good start, then I won’t worry about it, cause it will be driven.
Enjoyed your video, just found you. I'm in the same boat with my 69 C3. Just stripping paint and getting into the body work after doing the engine re install. I put in a Tremec 5 spd and have been thrilled with the performance. The paint is rough and I will have to do the interior upgrade from the original. I purchased the QuickJack that I see you have....how did that work for you ?
@@skyeking1 Awesome! The quickjack is amazing. Highly recommended. Not for outside use, but I have no choice. Highly recommend stripping down to fix the fender seams, especially in the front. Grind off some material and apply fiberglass. I used the “tiger hair” but still have some small cracks showing through the paint. Lesson learned. Take your time. #1 Will you paint it yourself?
@@thedrivewayC3 My intention is to paint it myself, trying to learn the new materials for painting. I painted it sometime around the late 70's with lacquer and a clear coat. The car made it through 2 divorces and is a survivor (me too). I used a razor blade for most of the stripping but will revert to 80 Grit from here on. Lots of work to do and need to persevere so your inspiration is appreciated.... Mike
@@skyeking1 Many ways to go with paint. As you know, it’s all about the prep. My two biggest mistakes: 1) Sanded the primer too fine. Only needs to be at around 320-400. I went to 600-800 and may have issues with easy chipping. Fingers crossed. 2) Didn’t have adequate water capture in my compressor system. Went with bigger moisture filters and had much better results. I used single stage from Sherman Williams Automotive. Great product, but takes some skill to apply.
Been following you and so excited for you! All the hours coming together. So rewarding! I’m right behind you on ours so hope to keep your pace!

Great video, helped me with installation of ours. We rebuilt the tabs on our original. We have struggled with many fitment issues with vintage air on our 68. The wiper bezel also did not fit well at all, had to heavily modify. the 1st one did not come close at all to fitting and they advised me to "bend" to fit, it broke so they did send another one.
@@c1nicolei I’m SO GLAD that Vintage Air is an option; however, I’ve had to modify or replace nearly every component to get it to fit. I realize that these GM cars are not 100% consistent, but VA’s quality control leaves much to be desired. To their credit, they have solid customer service.

@@noccis3448 Ah - yes. Nothing like taking lots of time to get it good and F’d up! 😅 More work for you! 👍🏼
Awesome. I’ve heard you can shim the body to close up the back of the door gap. Add a shim to the number 4 spot and “lift” the body to close the gap. I will be in the spot in about a month on my 82.
@@garymcdougle-82 Yeah, I think the shims are the way to go.
Moving on ❤ what your doing. 🙏🏾 nosale
Only way to get perfect gaps on these is to mold over the gaps and cut new ones. I had that done on a 75 vette convertible years ago, the guy used a product called vette bond, extreme amount of work but they were perfect in the end
@@danorourke5184 Agreed. Maybe if I decide to take this to another level someday, I’d consider that, but it’s fine for now. Nothing wrong with a little “original GM” look. 😅
These cars were never perfect when they came from the factory, on mine I got the gaps as even as I could and said good enough I am not building a show car and want to drive it, just need it to look like it did when I bought it back in 79. Nice job on yours, can’t wait to see it completed
