Friggin love the covict, glad to see her back out 💪💪💪
That convict holden is awesome you should start drag racing it again
I love it too and wish I could use it more. I will plan on doing some local 1/8 mile stuff but it only happens a few times a year. There’s too many $ and bullshit involved with racing the bigger tracks now. Different sanctioning bodies, different tech inspections and licences etc for different tracks so not worth the thousands of dollars a year before you even put it on the trailer.
love the update! sounds awesome in car particularly. what diff ratio does the volvo diff use, it seems pretty ideal with the current setup
Thanks mate, the ratio is 3.73 and yeah seems perfect for the 1/4. I don’t have a working tacho in it so no exact idea of the revs.
@@TasTuned sounds well above 6000 to My crossflow revometer(ears), would be interesting to know or calculate (what speed did it trap across the line?)
@deankdx 119mph.
I reckon right at 6000 rpm with a 26 inch tyre
@@TasTuned yeah, my rough calculation is 5900, so probably not far off.
Is a cool car man. I dig itl
the sound reminded Me of yours the in car footage at the end.
Thanks Rob, your crossflow has well and truly Leapt ahead these days but I’m happy keeping this one as is and hopefully keeping it alive long term
Goodaye good to see it running again how does the new cam compare to the old cam power wise, does it affect your brakes etc
@@RussellAdams-g1v to be honest it feels almost exactly the same… possibly pulls a bit harder with the upped compression. The specs were pretty much identical, old cam was 286 292 with 108 lobe separation and new one is 286 290 on 110 with a little more lift. I still think I can put some more timing into it but honestly it drives great and brakes felt normal until the master cylinder shit itself ( that was fun towing the caravan) probably after sitting so long so I’m putting a kit in it next week. I never seemed to have issues with the low vacuum and brakes.
@@TasTuned Thanks cheers Russell
Sounds great mate!
Looks like they made a Jeep renegade pickup version.
Quadrajet hands down the best carby for the 308 Holden engine.
So good to see you out putting some miles on it, definitely sounds healthier with quad on it. Looks like a great little camper you made too, should do a video on that too when you get a sec
such a cool car, sounds awsome !!! its a real driver !!!!!
I drilled out the oil returns in the head in my 355 vk,smoothed out the block internals,,I just said stuff it and went scat stroker and 5.7" rods and Probe high silicon forged chev pistons,I went with a crane cc 272 solid with LS 3 beehive springs 90# seat,295# on the nose, for long cam life, the ideal would be 120# seat and 295-300# nose,a bit tricky to set up.I dont rev it past 5000,no need lol,,with a ported head and ported and radiused torker single plane, with twin LPG throttle bodies,11:1 comp, the thing just revs up much quicker than when it was a 308,1st gear is a blast lol,, ignition timing is 20 initial 32 max with no vac,,,biggest problem today with flat tappet are the lifter crowns not being ground even or incorrect taper to match the lobe taper, always check lobe taper,,so if you buy new lifters, check them out on a Vee block and dial indicator for consistency, lifter face centre should be a cpl thou higher than circumference, also,no big chamfers on face edges.Powel engineering on ytube reground a new lifter and showed how bad it was and not evenly ground,,cheers and happy Toranaring
Thanks for reminding me of own quad carb Kingwood back in the day👍
Q-Jet any day, and they aew available in a number of cfm sizes from the 253 Holden fitments to Chevy big blocks. They are very tunable with adjustable power jets, different needles, and jet sizes for the secondary side and, of course, spring tension adjustment on the secondary air-valve butterflys
To be honest I have no idea how to tune one, I just know that the one i have works amazingly on my setup and I’m lucky for that. Drivability and economy is awesome
@TasTuned if you're happy with it, that's fine. I just thought I would give you some tips on what's out there. The best way to tune them is lean on the primary side (13 to 14:1) and a little ritch on the secondary side(12 to 12.5:1). These days, a good wideband O2 sensor is the best/cheapest tuning tool. I use a Raytech automotive lamda2 .Cheers 👍
Used Quadrajet's for years on 253 and 308's and they were good. Parts and wear is catching up with them now however. A DP is a stupid choice unless you have a signifigant cam and are buying fuel at 60 cents a liter. 600 Edelbrook/Carter for the 308. Its a spread bore , has 3 stage metering like the Qad and doesnt have 30 years of wear in it. Parts are easy to get hold of. You will still get the big kick from the spread bore and part throttle is nice. A DP needs a lot of messing around to get close. Holley DP= Great at WOT and not much else. You will find it will work sweetly out of the box. When I replaced a Carter Thermo quad on my 302 with the Edelbrook it was almost perfect out of the box. Alternatively the Spread bore Holley's are ok as well but dont run as nicely and use a little more fuel But are far simpler to get close to a decent tune.
You’re right, I got sucked into the idea of needing a holley dp if I wanted it to perform. Truth is I have a nice street car that loves the quaddy and barely spends any time above 4500 rpm
The small primaries means instant strong signal off the get go then the secondaries kick in Remember it's only a small capacity and mild overall set-up
Did the same in my 72 HQ premier. Changed to a Holley 650 vac-sec and hated it. Blueprinted the q-jet and put it back on. Better response, smoother operating, same power but way more economical on petrol. Q-jet for the win
Sometimes you feel pressured to “upgrade”for the sake of upgrading but yeah like you, for a street car I’m convinced. Quaddy all the way
I’ve got a mild 318 in my Chrysler, and I’m running an edelbrock 500cfm 4 barrel carb. To small? Dunno but it’s been tuned and runs great. Over the years I’ve had holleys as well but I’ve had issues in the past with Holley as in going out of tune and so on! This edelbrock has been on my car since 2019 and I’ve not felt the need to tamper with it as it just stays perfect! No shit. I will always run edelbrocks from now on and they are easy to tune and no messy fuel going everywhere if you should need to change jets as the top of the carb comes off,not a front fuel bowl. I’ve often wondered how mine would perform with a bigger carb but I was advised that the 500 was ample for my application.
I’ve never tried an edelbrock but sounds like it works great on your setup! I like the idea of changing jets like that, I didn’t know they had that design
@@TasTuned yes jets and tuning rods are changed from the top of the carb. The edelbrock is also a mechanical secondary but has a vacuum adjustable air valve at the top of the secondary Venturi. Once tuned properly they work flawlessly! It’s basically a Carter copy carb and many cars back in the day ran these from factory. A set and forget carb. If I ever get the money to change pistons and heads then I will go up to a bigger cfm carb as well but it can get quite expensive to do so.
I would second that as well, I have used Edelbrook on Ford 302, Hemi 6, 360 and 318 Chrysler as well as 253 and 308's. It was a bit tricky on the 265 and the 253 but everything else worked great, the 318 and 308 worked perfectly out of the box. 3 stage metering like the Rockchester for good responce and part throttle economy. I used a 600/650 on everything but the 360 where I used an 850 from memory. Even put one on a mates 13B but it didnt like being mounted left/right instead of front/rear on the stock Mazda inlet manifold, We went to a Holley in the end for it a 450 with dual metering plates and center pivot bowls but still a vac.
Remember, the quad is a vacuum secondary type carb. It groverns how much air the motor sees. So it suits low rpm pulls (typical street use) The double pumper opens all the butterflies at once and is hard to beat at high rpm race type flat to the floor use.
Yeah very true, I forgot that aspect. I’d like to try the double pumper with a single plane manifold sometime to see how it goes at more high rpm but for occasional street use I’m lucky this particular quaddy works well for me.
Quadrajet for street drivability and reasonable economy. Had the Holley on a WB Kingswood with the 5.0 4 speed and she was a thirsty bitch and nothing outstanding. Swapped out to the qjet and it was a different car. Snappy accelleration and when those secondaries opened it really lifted it's game. But you need a good qjet guy to set it up.
Quady on my HZ tonner daily for my business for sure.
The answer is both. Both the Quadra Jet or a Holley. They can both be used depending on combination you choose what the Engine wants, tuning ability all comes into it. Use what the Engine wants. I have Even run As Big as 950 double pumper on mine no issues what so ever. Not for everyone though.
Completely agree, for what I want to do and my setup I’m lucky this particular quaddy works really well. For something more serious or competition related the holley certainly are usually a better fit and much more easily tuneable for the common man
She sounds sweet with the quadrajet
holley would be the go for ease of use
Yeah I agree for the ease of tuning, I understand holleys but hands down the Rochester wins on economy and power in my experience
@@TasTunedfor sure be cool to see how they go dual plane v single plane intakes
Yeah good idea, I’m always looking online for a single plane just to try but good ones for the early heads are hard to find.
Make them threw the body and get all the ground clearance
How would you go registering it as a ride share ? Like uber or didi but more so something private like a private car service? they might have a public liability insurance to cover you as part of the ride share system , I'm not sure how it works, I've never looked into it, but i use a private pick up/drop off service to get to the airport, and I know legally they are under the ride share regulations. As for the memories growing up, both mum and dad had Toranas, dad had a yellow LH 4 door SL that he optioned up with a LSD, 4 speed manual and 253, but he worked for a Holden dealership so he brought all the parts from his work to make it look like a SL/R, unfortunately tough times in the 80's and low wages ment dad had to sell it to support us kids. Mum also had a LX Torana 4 door SL, it was just a 202 with column shift, once again tough times in the 90's forced mum to sell her car and buy a more economical car with more seats , i remember my parents owning these cars, but i don't ever remember what it was like to ride in them, and unfortunately I've never been in another Torana since, I've tried to find mum's car but i think it's gone, and dad knows his car was destroyed in a crash after he sold it. One day i hope to own a LH/LX 4 door, just need to build my shed so i have somewhere to store it and work on it along with all my other projects that have been put on hold, If i ever get out to wagga again I'd love to come for a run in your Torana, would be more than happy to pay, i think what you are doing will be great for anyone to experience or relive old memories.
Thanks mate! I love how people hold onto memories about these old cars. Where abouts are you located? I’m road tripping this week but not sure where yet
@@TasTuned I'm normally down in Bega, but I'm currently away in Mackay QLD working, one day I'll come out to wagga or somewhere close to a car show and catch up with you.
Awesome idea giving people rides in the torana. She sounds very healthy 🤙
sign me up aha would love to go for a ride in one of these beauties love the idea of the old fellas going for a ride in something they once owned maybe get some of those see through window stickers to advertise just ask and il take ya for a spin
but id for sure hit up the local rsl
Love it thanks mate, I’ll get a list of all the ideas and see what I can make happen!
what's your advice on how i could best make this happen and get connected with the right passengers?
Are they a interference fit motor? Hopefully the pistons and valves didn't have a get together 🤞🏻
Not sure….. it still turns over but I’ll pull the rocker covers when I remove the timing case and check… 🤞🤞🤞
@@TasTuned hope it's good mate, she's been fighting you for a bit. Quick compression test will hopefully tell you if you have bent valves. Be good to see you out at another track day, you looked like you had a blast.
I’ve since discovered I lost the pin out of the end of the camshaft that locates the pulley…. Hopefully nothing is bent, the front of the engine is coming off again 🤦🏼♂️
Yup I've had that happen too 😢 thankfully my valves didn't kiss pistons... hopefully yours are the same! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Bummer mate, she's testing you out a fair bit.Nice car by the way.
Thanks! It should be up and running again fairly soon.
You done well in that little beast
Thanks it was good fun, felt like a go kart
put an LS in it, 308 getting old to much money to just keep up with a stock ls, in my younger days I had an LX SS hatch had a 327 stroker in it heads, piston, sj chev rods, cran 288 solid could get passed 12.2 I pulled out the engine put in a vk changed nothing ran 11.6
I definitely thought about it but staying old school for now anyway. I have another lh 4 door that may cop something later model
Cars always keep ya busy.
the other block can be sleeved i wouldnt throw it away 308 blocks are getting hard to find theses days might of bent the valves in that cylinder too
Yeah I have it tucked away, at the time the cost to resleeve and bore was about the same as the other block so it was easier that way. Head surprisingly seems fine. I also since discovered that I had lost a small screw from the quarajet baseplate so that’s the culprit 🤦🏼♂️
Carby bolt from base plate??? more info please as you have us all worried, Use to own a 5.0 ss papaya Orange back in the day cost second hand $4800.00 lol OH the good ol days
Bingo! After checking the quadrajet that’s what happened, small bolt from baseplate came out
@@TasTunedI remember back in the day seeing those type of base plates and thought they were a disaster waiting to happen, good vibes thanks mate
holy shit that looks like my piston head 😲 swapped my 650DP with my brothers quadrajet to see if my torana would run differently, 5 hours later it went bang 😭
Cant go wrong owning a LX 2 door🤑
Hate to say mate! but your pistons are in ass about face!😂
i was gunna say that engine and box came out too easy speaking from experience .
