The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
There was a time when Germany was considered a cool climate.
The 50th-degree latitude was the northernmost barrier for viticulture, and it runs through the Rheingau region in the southern half of Germany.
As temperatures increased official wine-growing regions were developed north of the Rheingau in Germany - namely for example Saale Unstrut and Sachsen - but even those vineyards do not represent the northernmost frontiers of the wine world.
Northern Europe might be the next big thing as sparkling wine from the UK has performed well on this channel for instance. There are winemakers in Nordic countries making wines looking at how far they can push the traditional boundaries of viticulture. So let’s find out whether the North of Europe has more to offer than Akvavit, mead, and beer.
The Netherlands or Holland, is a trading nation and was a major player in the wine and spirit trade. They were also tasked with draining the swampy Médoc, creating space to grow grapes. As they were importing and exporting wine they also tried their hand in winemaking to less success.
According to the Oxford Companion, the new wave of Dutch producers started in 1967 when Frits Bosch created his Slavante vineyard of just 800 sq m. There are more than a hundred producers in the Netherlands today working with grape varieties like Riesling and Müller-Thurgau, Auxerrois.

Sweden is not that expensive nowadays ... The list of the 8 most expensive countries worldwide includes Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Japan, Denmark, Bahamas, Luxembourg, and Israel. These countries stand out for their high cost of living, accommodation, groceries, dining out, and purchasing power.

The Canadian wine industry is somewhat curious from a legal perspective. Inter-provincial trade is very tightly regulated making it difficult to find Canadian wines from out of province. The sale of alcohol in Ontario is regulated through a government owned corporation called the LCBO, which claims to be the largest single purchaser of wine in the world. So, in Ontario you can choose from one of the largest collections of wine in the world, but you usually cannot find any wine from outside the province. Ontario wine production is regulated through an organization called the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA), which most wineries subscribe to and upholds pretty high quality standards. There is a lot going on in Ontario wine, and it is an exciting growth industry. I know that some of the higher-end wines are trying to be competitive on the international stage, but there are also a lot of great table wines, mid-range culinary pairing wines, and wines for going out with friends. It might be worth the visit! Also, you should to try Baco Noir. It is a wine which is exploding in popularity. It is a hybrid between European viniferia and domestic grapes. I would be curious to hear your take. All the best from Canada!

Why do you use a 100 point system if only the top 50 points are ever likely to be used? I'd have interpreted 75% as fair had I not read the description. I would have rated something I like but that is not a profound wine (But I would be happy to drink all day) like maybe Casal garcia at 75 or lower on a 100 point scale.

Could it be the climate being predictable in south america (And new zealand) making it seem easier to make wines like these? Spain would be simular. Also maybe they want to appeal to wine drinkers rather than than none wine drinkers like the barefoot. I used to use the casillero del diablo pinot for cooking alot in the past. It's not much more expensive than the de alcoholised cooking wines sold in the grocery store here but so much better.

I would love it if they made Botrytis or Eiswein north of germany I have tasted grapes that have been left on the vine very late here in the stockholm area and from what I tasted that seems an interesting route to take. These were just vines planted by the wall of someones garage not profesionally grown and managed.

I am a great fan of Moët, what would help would be a decipherable release date. That would make the test even more fair. I bought 2 bottles over Christmas and although the wines were remarkably similar the labels were quite different, this set me in the hunt for release dates which I neve4 resolved.

I understand that Slinde Vineyard's Solaris (Slinde, Norway) is quite good, winning a few awards. As for Solitude Springs Farm & Vineyard, we are a year away from making our first wine from unprotected (no greenhouses) hybrid grapevines. We are located just 100 miles (160 km) south of the Arctic Circle in Interior Alaska, about the same latitude as Oulu, Finland for reference.

Missing out on Canada, Québec specifically for the northern climate. You should try Domaine Bergeville’s bubbles, Domaine du Nival’s Pinot Noir and Charlevoyou’s Osceala Muscat. Or Even Nova Scotia/Tidal Bay’s Benjamin Bridge sparkling offerings.

On a visit to Venice some years ago we had finished our dinner and I asked about a glass of dessert wine. The waiter brought a bottle of what he called Fragiolini. He said that when the wine and strawberry harvests are over they combine them into a wine. It was like drinking liquified strawberries with the kick of a mule. I asked about getting a bottle but he shook his head and told me that it does not travel. I secretly believe the restaurant made it themselves in a bathtub in the backyard. Does such a wine actually exist? Have you ever tasted it?

I remember the 1990s when we drank Amarone in our local wine bar in Manchester. The bar ran a competition between Amarone and Faustino V. Maybe because of price Faustino was always ahead but in my opinion, there was no competition. The Amarone won the day.
