GoalZero DIY Van build - Thoughts on the 6000x
website: www.dwnshifters.com/
Van Electrical System: www.dwnshifters.com/blog/2021/1/13/using-a-portable-power-station-in-your-build
DwnShifters provides an update on the newest and largest power station from Goal Zero - the Yeti 6000x. John discusses what they like and wish was designed better while using it for the last year in their custom DIY van build. John talks about the App, battery chemistry (Li-ion NMC vs LiFePO4), 12v and 120v systems, pricing, competitors, solar panels, alternator charging, and more.
Follow Jess, an operations wizard and John, a designer/maker as they ditch their Brooklyn, NY digs for a more spacious 60 square foot Ford Transit High-Roof Extended 350 XLT. Jess and John did the conversion in the sweltering, litter-lined streets of New York City and are on a quest for actual nature and more temperate weather. Will they make it? Stay tuned to find out!
Conceptually, the van is the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom and the outdoors serves as their living room. This concept prioritized a functional kitchen and bath, while providing plenty of seating for dining and working indoors when the weather is disagreeable. The other driver for the van design was the urge to move away from a bed and garage hogging the entire back half of the interior. Why have a bed taking up half your space all day when you only sleep for 8 hours? The solution to this was to create a queen size murphy bed that hides during the day, thus creating twice as much functional space during the day. We're changing to a lower gear, squeezing into a custom built van, and exploring the country! Learn with us and come along for the ride.

      I'm sorry, I don't know what an Eco pro is. Solar panels have always worked in the shade, but they are far less effective. Panels with busbars or microinverters are helpful when panels are partially shaded.

    Thanks for the video! If you could fit another one, would you like to have a second max air fan? I plan to have exactly what you have on your roof and I have the same windows/ventilation as you - what do you think about if I put my skylight (likely the Heki midi or mini aka smaller than yours) off center so that a second max air fan could go next to it? Is having 2 unnecessary/do you foresee any problems with this layout? Thanks again!

    • @dwnshifters6833

      Thanks so much for having a watch, Jordyn! We are still HUGE fans of our layout after 3.5 years of living in it full-time. If we had to do it all over again - we would do the same layout. On the roof - the priority for us was solar panels. We both work remotely and John's laptop is a power hog while doing his design work. So getting the most solar on the roof was the goal and limited how many roof fans we could have. If we had the option, we would prefer that the skylight (of any size) be at the very front of the roof, so fresh (cool) air was drawn all the way through the van and out the exhaust (right now it pulls from the middle and out the rear). We have a hack for this by using a pair of Transit specific air vents that fit in our front cab windows, which achieves the same goal though. We personally do not see the need for 2 roof vans - unless you do not have a skylight. On very hot days - you're pulling/exhausting hot air into and out of the van, so we will generally hang out outside, or use small personal fans to get a nice direct breeze on our hot bodies. This is our 2 cents. Feel free to reach out via gmail at dwnshisfters with any other questions, as we don't check our comments here as often as we check our email. Thanks and good luck with your build! Jess & John

    Thanks! this is so helpful. I just recently made the wonderful decision to stop stressing over the full Victron system and all of those parts and wiring, and made the decision to go with the GZ. (although based on this video I'm going to do a quick search of potentially new options out there... but with you on this battery size!) I actually just found your wiring diagram where you show the other components you need to wire it all up, super helpful, thank you! Now I just have to finish defining wire gauge and fuses, etc. I'm curious as to your comment about the AC problem- I'm wondering, would it work to put a switch on/off wired in- like for the water heater? so you could turn that off without turning off all of the power cord? That's what I'm going to try to do...

      So glad the video was insightful. You pay a price for an all-in-one, but if the money is available, it does save a lot of hassle. And -YES- we are using a cord with an On/Off switch for the water heater. We would still prefer that we could turn it On/Off with the App, but the manual switch does do the job. Good luck with your build and keep in touch!

    • @dwnshifters6833
      @dwnshifters6833 Před rokem

      So sorry for the late reply! We're happy to describe our system, but it's important to note that it requires quite a bit of power to keep the floors warm. Since this is the case, we generally only use our radiant floors when we are in a campground with electric hook-up or while we're driving and our alternator can charge our battery bank. As for the construction of the system, we first used insulation on the van floor. We used a polyiso board like this: amzn.to/3iqG4Zx (you can buy larger boards at a hardware store). We then used 1/2" plywood over the isoboard insulation. On top of the plywood, we used a reflective foam insulation like this: amzn.to/3Zs36jq. On top of the foam, we added our radiant system. We used this product: amzn.to/3k8eReE . We ended up using 3 of these mats in the van - your results may vary. On top of the radiant mats, we used 1/4" plywood and then our finish material. We used a durable and sustainable flooring sheet material, similar to this: amzn.to/3VVP8Db. We prefer a sheet to tile or planks, as there are no seams. This eliminates liquids getting under the floor and there won't be any cracks from tiles shrinking and expanding due to temperature and climate. Lastly, we installed a Thermostat to control when the floors are on/off. We used one similar to this: amzn.to/3GWcwMS . We hope this helps!

    First of all thank you for making the youtube video. I was really excited about the Yeti 6000X when I finally received it around May 2021, I used it for several months and didn't have any issues, until I stopped using it for about 4 months because I am renovating my house and I had to use Solar Panels from Goal Zero also. I been charging my Yeti 6000x for 3 straight days now and it only at 77% full. When I first plug it in to the same power outlet it shows 500W going in and after a minute it will go down to 50W. I also called Goal Zero Technical Support and we trouble shoot it but it turns our that it needs to be replaced with a new one (Hopefully New). The sad part is today is March 2022 and I haven't even paid the Yeti 6000X because I loan it through Affirm. I mean it has 2 years warranty but I just bother me that not even a year of using it, its broken already? I am very careful with it also and only use it for basic stuff in the house because I am afraid that It will stress the battery. What happens if the warranty expires? I will be stuck with a block of useless equipment and make it to a chair probably? I am freaking out really. Did anyone of you ran into this issue? Is there 3rd party where I can buy to extend the warranty? PLEASE HELP! Thank you!

      Hi Christian! Thanks for having a watch! We have had our fair share of issues with the GZ products, but they have always come through with replacements and support. We'd suggest staying patient and creating a good relationship with customer service so get the issues resolved. We have had a number of issues, some of them with the programming on the units that created issues with our solar panels being compatible. Their engineers worked with us to update the firmware so our panels worked correctly. We were quite impressed. It wasn't an overnight solution, but our system has been working great since the firmware update. As for warranties, you can do a simple Google search for "Electronics extended warranties" and a number of options will pop up. We have used Asurion for our GZ products, as we bought our GZ products through Amazon and Amazon allows you to add an Asurion extended warranty at the time of purchase. All the best to you!

Waste of money with this unit in my opinion $4000 for a 48v.400 amp lifepo4 battery , $ 1,200 for 3- 450 watts solar panels connected in series , $ 700 for an all in one inverter and about 300 to 400 bucks for wires and fuses.

The GZ products are portable, meaning they can go from the garage to the house to the van to the yurt with relative ease and all connected to an app for easy management. The system you shared sounds awesome, but its not moving anywhere once installed. Just like music - if you want to listed to music at home, get a record player. Great review! You should do an update video that’s more recent. I noticed that you haven’t posted a video in over a year. Hope all is well.

      Thanks for watching! We are alive - thanks for your concern. Sadly, both of our work schedules have been insane and our youtubing and other social media outlets have taken a hit because of it. You're not the first to ask about a one year update and we will get to one - we promise! If you scroll through the comments, we briefly shared our updated views, but a video will come in the near future. All the best!

    Does this make any noise when running?

    • @dwnshifters6833

      It has heavy-duty computer style fans that kick on when it's either being charged or drawn quickly. Not noisy at all, but the unit isn't totally silent.

    Thanks for the great review. Now that it's been a year using it what are your overall thoughts pros, cons and how is the alternator charging working out? Thanks

    • @dwnshifters6833
      @dwnshifters6833 Před 2 lety

      Hi Brain! Thanks for reaching out! We plan to make a video update to share all the details, but overall we are happy with the unit after a years use. As noted in another comment, the fact that the unit can only input 600w has been frustrating at times, as charge times can be slow. More panels would result in faster charge times and we'd really love for that to be an option. Alternator charging has been solid. We have a VERY long run on our cable from the alternator to the back of our van, which means that there is some loss (and heat) between the alternator and Yeti, but it sure is nice to see 300-400w of continuous charging from the alternator while we're driving. Something that is also nice about this setup is that the solar panels can still collect power as well. Stay in touch and keep an eye out for a video update in the near future.

    Someone once told me that this carries as much power as the first generation of Tesla home batteries, which would be amazing if true.

    Thanks for posting this! What is your source for 600W? Are you using 3 of the Goal Zero Boulder 200 Watt Briefcase Monocrystalline Solar Panels?

    • @dwnshifters6833
      @dwnshifters6833 Před 2 lety

      Thanks so much for watching! We are using 6 COMPACT 100w Monocrystalline panels from Renogy mounted on our roof. Due to our roof configuration with skylight and fan, we needed a compact panel solution to get everything to fit. We actually have a video on our DIY roof rack that illustrates our layout.

    His comments on compromises mirror every comment I leave in van build videos. Very light build. Looks to be ordinary inexpensive material, but so tidy and thought out, that it rivals the chic builds.

    Your diagram in one of the comments is great! I may have missed it, but are you manually switching plugs on the unit to go from solar to shore and back?

    • @dwnshifters6833
      @dwnshifters6833 Před 2 lety

      Yes, on the video that is what we're doing. In the real world, we attach shore power directly to our 120v system so we're not taxing our yeti when we don't need to. (This is done by plugging our power strip in the diagram directly to shore power). Glad you liked the diagram and thanks for watching!

      @@bnrlabs5923 they seem like great units at a good price. We wanted the full capacity of the 6000x or we would have considered other brands.
