Great interview. I loved hearing about what goes into designing a game.

We LOVED the Campaign. We didn't feel that the story being linear was limiting. We didn't go into it expecting it to be a strong, story campaign. We just found it fun to play Scythe differently while adding new components with a decent enough story on top of it. We never thought it was going to be the 'choose your own adventure' type campaign, at all. Using this expansion to teach a new-to-Scythe player probably isn't optimum.

“That Player” sounds like he must be awesome at this game. Perhaps your fourth friend was very weak?

I love a running gag. My game group and I have one where we propose a quick game of Feast for Odin if there is any amount of time before the game store closes. It's fun.

My favorite was Ticket to Ride Legends of the West.

My likelihood of sleeving is a balance of shuffle frequency and game value. Even though Love Letter is constantly shuffled I won't sleeve it, because I can get a new copy for $10 whenever I want. Meanwhile I have sleeved my copy of Age of Renaissance even though you only shuffle the deck two or three times a game, because it's an out of print game from the 90s. Edit: Although if I played Love Letter every day I would sleeve it. So I guess frequency of play also enters into it.

I only sleeve cards for games when I need to shuffle/draw cards a lot. Over a decade ago started to sleeve all board game for a couple years, but realized it was not needed and an extra cost that wasn't needed. I stopped and removed almost all the sleeves maybe 4 years after I started. It takes more space and costs money. IN the last 15 years of playing a ton of board game, someone spilled 1 drink near a card once. It helps if you game with people that understand basic common sense were they put their drinks to help reduce these type of possible moments. unsleeved

Very helpful info! I’ve only been a DM for about a year and wish I had my players make their characters at our session 0. I ran into the same issues where most of the party spent time creating their characters around their class - and 3/7 of the players were rogues hahaha. We’ve adapted as time goes on and it’s been a fun game, but I’ve learned a lot from my mistakes. Thanks for the video!

Played this yesterday... I really enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I had a really cool piece of factory equipment that let me only discard 1 card off the top. I coupled that with my Owner's special ability of getting stuff from the market at a discount. Ended up earning 2nd place in a 4 player game. Very enjoyable to make at least 1 drink a turn (although maybe not sell it due to aging). I kind of wish there was 1 more round. I'll also say that our game had the problem of the Africa stuff mixed in when there wasn't any recipes that used that stuff. Probably best to just re-draw the card when Africa stuff shows up in that scenario. At first, it seemed like a bridge too far to focus on personal goals and public goals... but near the end I wound up completing my personal goals and earning 1 public goal... so maybe it wasn't too much to think about. You could always leave those end game goals out for brand new players. Overall, I'd give this game an 8.5 out of 10. Larger text and region icons were the only other downsides.

Wow - You both made SO many goals for 2024! Because you set the bar so high for yourselves, you're seeing where you're behind at the end of the first quarter - but I do want do give you both props for all you DID DO during the first quarter!!!!!!!!!!!! It's great that you got some weight loss protocols kicked off and that it's taking those single digit pounds off (that's the only way to get started!) ;) I love the getting in "GenCon-shape" goal. I want the same for myself for June and being in "vacation-shape" so I can do a lot of walking and have the stamina to enjoy my trip more. I'm going to try to get walking more starting NOW and will check in with you both on your steps too - lets get moving! I love Suzanne's organizational excitement! I do want to see her drive Ben crazy LOL and I'm so excited for whenever the studio is ready!

Good luck on the weight loss! One thing I did where I went from 254# to 212# was drink lots of water (about a gallon or so per day). That increased my metabolism, made me less hungry, and the only annoying side effect was extra trips to the bathroom. I don't think the kind of water matters, just drink what you like. I used body armor water.

I picked up a walnut Game Topper (along with 16 thematic mats) to complete one of my resolutions this year. I'm sure a dedicated game table will be a resolution for another year, but for now I think the Topper is fantastic. :o)

I loved hearing about your top 10 games to play 2-player! Thanks for sharing more to play games for my list LOL. I can relate to Suzanne being a "power player." We finish a game and I say "again!" My spouse always has to be the one to make us take a break. We board game marathon really often on a weekend. So it's good he gets us some breaks to eat, stretch, etc. :)

Interesting lists. Most are not my style as I am more a brass, nucleum, barrage type but I LOVE the fact you had Cthulhu wars, Ultimate railroads and Auztralia on your lists! Not sure if you have had the chance, but if you get a chance to play Glorantha, take it. To me it is like Cthulhu wars on steroids as it has a few more mechanics at work that really add to the game.

Watching at night, so again, water and a beer haha. Drinking Skunkape IPA, a limited release from Boneyard beer here in Bend, OR. I happened to be punching Apiary while watching, which I got with Wyrmspan in the mail earlier this week. Can’t wait to play both of those! In addition, I ordered and received Kutna Hora a few weeks ago, and can’t wait to table that either. So many shelf of opportunity games to play, that I’m super excited for.

I played Apiary solo and with my gaming group a week ago and thought it was really fun. Scores were 99 in the solo game, and 78/67/67/61 in the 4-player game.

Thanks for the great tips! We just combated FOMO by going to a game shop to test play a game prior to buying. Smart move - we didn't like it! And some of our favorite games have been used recommendations from a game shop. Crazy the return on investment in a great used game. But my favorite tip... FRIENDS! <3
