I dreamt about a fire and evacuating after fire alarms went off at a pool exactly like the one in the hotel. I later learned many years ago that the hotel actually had a fire by my cousin who lives near there. Hello to any Rowans if you are reading this comment. I honestly should find the time to pay you guys a visit again. Lost touch for so long.

To answer your question 9mins in about what this structure did, it is as mentioned by another comment, a tipple. Coal that comes out of the mine is full of rocks and other waste, so a conveyor takes it to the top where stone is picked out. Then using gravity and vibrating metal screens the coal is sorted into different chutes based on lump size, which had different uses. Then it is dumped into waiting train cars on the siding next to the tipple. You can see a lot of the sorting machinery still in place. In operation, it would have been an extremely loud place, hot in the summer, cold in the winter. Paid less than underground, so the jobs were less desirable, and usually given to boys. Most tipples in Alberta were constructed as cheaply as possible, so they were rickety wooden things, meaning almost none are left. There is great wooden tipple preserved at the Atlas Coal Mine museum outside Drumheller which is worth a visit. This brick, steel, and concrete tipple is much sturdier, which is probably why no one wanted to spend the cost of tearing it down after the mine closed. Looks newer too, I'd guess the 1950s, just before the coal industry in the Pass went into rapid decline thanks to railway dieselization, and general collapse of coal demand in Canada in the 1960s. Crowsnest Pass is very a beautiful place, and has a very unusual history, such as having a mountain fall on a town and being a hotbed of socialism in otherwise conservative Alberta. You can learn a little more about that here: albertaadvantagepod.com/2021/07/02/blairmore-alberta-canadas-first-communist-town-council/ Thanks for this wonderful video!

  • @ChristineRowleySmith

wow, watching this video makes me sad as I grew up in rural Sk during the 50's and 60's...left after joining the military in 1963. I did return to Hodgeville often during leave and this town is still there but fading with a population of around 80. Nearby towns such as Bateman and Kelstern are now the same as in this video. In fact, when I last visited and took a trip over to Kelstern, there was nothing left other than a small community center. Just a suggestion to Chris Attrell, you might want to visit the Hodgeville area and do up a video of the various towns that are fading fast, Other ones are Flowing Well (no longer there), Neidpath, Shamrock, Saint Boswells, Dendron, Hollinquest, Braddock, and many others. A long time ago, these communities were busy little centers.....btw, thank you for doing these videos.......

Chris, 2nd thing. Stop being hesitant to check.out the buildings with no tresspassing signs. If they have a big fence around them fine but if you can walk to them you can explore. They only way one can get in trouble if the owner is there, calls the police and makes a report with the police there. Once thats done the next time u do it and get caught only then you can get in trouble. In joe bidens new america, the cops today are not going to bother anyone for looking or filming. Stop being scared.
