    I've just come back from hospital after my first motorbike accident in Hanoi. I was about to pass through an intersection and had 4 seconds left on a green light so i was accelerating (stupid i know). 4 people decided to run their red creating a wall of bikes, and I had to emergency brake, locked my brakes and ended up under the bike, road rash on my leg, arm, and big hematoma on my hip. First accident in 10 years of riding, I would be fine if i had dressed for the slide but alas i was wearing shorts and t-shirt, lucky to be alive. Stay safe and dont risk your life for a green light (even if you have right of way!).

    And I, as a Singaporean of Hadhrami (Yemeni) Arab descent, though I'm culturally & practically Malay, owing to the fact that my ancestors had remained in the Malay World for almost 4 centuries consecutively, which is besides the point, did recently faced some sort of a borderline, passive-aggressive racism from a particular ethnic Kinh online, of which I responded to a meme posted by another netizen, which is about the surname "Tran", by commenting that it's not supposed to be pronounced literally, letter by letter. This particular ethnic Kinh came out & replied to me & he somewhat agreed with my statement simply by saying "It is" but strangely enough, on the same breath, he said to me that I'm not Vietnamese & accuse me of spreading misinformation & hence, asking me to stop doing so when I never even said that I'm Vietnamese in the first place. I told him off that just because I'm not Vietnamese, doesn't mean that I cannot learn & be keen of the language. That being said, I hope that this does not dampen my spirit of learning the language & I also hope that this does not made me change my impression about the Vietnamese people by making broad generalisations.

    Why would you go and try to settle in Vietnam when you're from the UK? Thanks for sharing but I don't think "it can be solved". Just avoid such people. SE Asia and E Asia are in general mentally colonized people and see themselves as inferior to whites. Why would you want to partake in such a cultural sphere which doesn't benefit you? Simply go there, make your money, and get out and stick to your race and people. Don't seek to change them. If I were you I'd go back to the UK and make a lot of money and live a comfortable life, not settle for scraps in VN and try to "get a job" in VN. Lmao. Why would you even compete for a job there?

      I'm in thailand and I only live in expensive condos. Living with "lower-middle" class Thais is depressingly tedious and you face a lot of micro-aggressions and subtle racism. Nowadays, the only Thais I encounter are those who know my status is on top of the totem pole and they just serve me. I much prefer it this way. If they have a class system, I'd rather be in a situation where I benefit from it.

    I mean Vietnam is a quite a homogeneous country. People are pretty culturally uneducated, and could be as very ignorant at the time. I am Vietnamese but I've been away from my country for more than 9 years. Sorry for what you've experienced but it will take a feel generations to change this. I bet you also feel the same in the UK because let be honest, you might be British by nationality but ethnicity, you're definitely not a white person. Just like me. If I was born in the UK, I would still be yellow, even if I acquired the British accent. It's the systemic racist world that we live in. Thanks to European imperialism and colonialism past. Strongly embedded and Hollywood helps a lot in this matter too. This won't change in Vietnam anytime soon. I guess all over Asia to be honest.

    Vinhome is massively overrated in my opinion. Using it’s name to attract buyers to live in it and calling themselves successful is sort of strange tbh. And the design itself is an Eye Sore, like building giant luxurious skyscrapers next to a place where houses aren’t even taller than 2 stories just seems eccentric. And also Vingroup has a reputation for threatening to sue and silencing its customers, so thank you for actually saying something.

    One example is that most Vietnamese parents have the mindset that English originally appeared in England, aka where white people, and it must be best for their children to learn from them. This type of thought is really common whether in English learning or math, literature tutoring. Like, if a child comes up and tells their parents that they are going to study from a graduate instead of some prestigious teachers, his parents won't let it be. So the problem really is the assumption that education must be received from a high-rank (?) trainer. That is also why Asian parents force their children to go in for school for the gifted, not the ones they actually like. Sorry if I was being offensive, this one is really a sensitive topic to talk about, just give my idea you know? I'm not a native speaker, too so I hardly know if my idea is insulting or not (really sorry) I know you have been through a hard time, but being newly exposed to foreign cultures is really difficult and it is hard for the people from the older generation (the people you usually communicate with). So it is something to do with the older generations. but young people are now more open-minded and not so affected by the thought of white privilege (thanks to the internet). Hope you and your family are doing good in the pandemic. p/s: Im a Vietnamese teenager and I have a great arabian teacher who has teached me a lot of things. I reckon that Vietnam and Asian countries will respect the races and people with different looks(?) in the future when we are exposed long enuf to the international culture

    And the most important thing is, if you apply for the English teacher position, students are very interested in registering English centers with "native teachers". For us, English comes from England, and the British are white. so the students want to learn English from them who they think is the truly "native teachers". English centers want to please their customers so they are willing to pay very high salaries as long as they are white teachers: D even though they do not have pedagogical skills, they do not even speak vietnamese but customers are satisfied because they are learning ENGLISH from "native teachers". If you apply to a Chinese class then we would welcome a teacher who is Chinese people. if it Korean class, then we want a teachers with yellow skin and one - lidded eyes. You know what, because students just want to learn foreign languages from native speakers. Vietnamese language teachers receive only 1/4 the salary compare to you. Are they also being racist in their own country?

    • @maeybee4354
      @maeybee4354 Před 2 lety

      No. This salary difference between foreign language and native language teachers has nothing to do with racism. People that teach the native language of the country will usually earn less than the people that teach a language that is foreign to the country. It's supply and demand.. in every country there are more people that can teach the language of the country than there are people that want to learn it.

    In Vietnam we often say "nhìn mặt mà bắt hình dong" it mean we usually evaluate the capacity, finance, knowledge of a person by their appearance, nationality, and gestures. We don't hate a country at all, but we have a habit of sorting the staff according to their country's economic and educational level. I believe in the process they will remove the stereotypes about you. I am very sorry about your experience in Vietnam

    Blame Hollywood for all the movies they pump in VN for the last 30 years. It s recommended that you should learn some Vietnamese, we love foreign people who can speak our language. And then, trust me, you will have a lot of good time seeing VN people just being skeptical to all the foreigners, as long as they dont understand what we r speaking, regardless of your ethnic of nationality. And beside, Vietnamese love fair skin color, so even if you r a Vietnamese and have a dark skin colour, you will feel a lot of disadvantages.

  • @vumanhtung
    @vumanhtung Před 3 lety

    Well, first of all, I'm very sorry for what you've been through. Secondly, racism does exist on a global scale. It's a combination of over-generalization, stereotype and ignorance. Generalization and stereotype originally came from our survival instinct as human nature. Since the beginning of mankind, we needed to be aware of the surrounding environment to avoid potential threats so we tend to have a quick evaluation for everything and everyone. However, in the modern day, with the globalization and the rapid changes in demographic, our quick evaluation became "obsolete". It sadly became over-generalization and stereotype due to the lack of proper education or kindness (or both). Thirdly, Vietnam is a developing country, our education is still a huge problem. We do have "racism" so called negative stereotype even among our own people in different regions. Nowadays, with the technological advancement, our generation are also facing the difficulty of confirmation bias and hatred, escalated by social media algorithm. I hope this could help you feel a bit better.
