    Outstanding knife. I bought this knife (in 'military green') because the high carbon blade is better at throwing sparks. Unfortunately, even in CO doing really limited work with food prep and giving it a rinse and dry, it started to show corrosion. If I had oil with me all that time that'd be fine, but it isn't something I want to deal with so I returned it in favor of the 546 Craftline S Pro with the stainless blade. The advantages (for about $4 more) is that you get the corrosion resistance PLUS a rubber over plastic grip for portions of the handle which radically improve grip. Mine looks just like the one you had, with the blue insert on the black handle. Absolutely spectacular, and they'll make nice inexpensive but incredibly useful (and appreciated) gifts for friends.

    Hey Jeff, Thanks for sharing that - great review. I love my Spyderco Shaman - including the black factory G10 scales, so I never thought of changing them out, but those Desert Ironwood scales you put on look so cool! I think wooden handle scales on a Shaman are even cooler because of the smooth, contoured edges and the relatively large size of the scales all serve to really show off the natural beauty of the wood. Not sure if you know or not (you probably do), but Ironwood is a very dense, hardwood that makes great handle scales for knives because it's so durable. I was also thinking, one reason a lot of people don't get wooden hand scales is because they can sometimes warp, crack, etc., but I like the way you did it to buy them aftermarket, because - even if something happens to the wood ones, you can just put back on the original G10's which are still very cool, so win-win! By the way, I just subscribed to your channel, so I'm not sure if you actually live in Montana, but some of my best childhood memories are from our summer vacations up to the "Big Sky Country". What a beautiful state! My dad was born and raised in Montana for several years (until his family couldn't take the winters anymore and they moved south!), so he knew all the best places to take us backpacking and fishing. If you do live up there, consider yourself blessed! 🙂👍 Take care bro! Steve Bates

      Nope. This is a well regarded, OLD company. This knife was designed for craftsman and construction workers who demand a lot from their gear. I own a bunch of knives, to include the stainless version of this (Craftline S Pro 546) which are MUCH more expensive. This is one of the best knives I own. The price reflects production costs and numbers, not quality. In fact, the reason it has been made for so long is because it's such a high quality knife.

    You giving bad information when you say G10 is not quality. G10 is extremely durable. It does not show wear. It is not plastic. Aluminum looks nice but it shows wear. You have the option of upgrading the scales to carbon fiber, micarta, and titanium. But for an average price of 150.00 G10 is an awesome handle material. My biggest gripe are all the holes in the scales for the clip placement. I prefer to not have extra holes in my scales so I change the scales on mine

    Excellent EDC knife, but after a few small modifications it is perfect! I put a deep pocket clip, a little Loctite must be put on the pivot screw and I put a new edge on the blade. It arrived at 17 degrees, but because the factory grinds with machines, the heat destroys the metal, making it prone to damage. Now that I completely removed that metal and put a new edge (20 degrees), there is no micro chipping after I cut the cardboard and processed the wood and it stays sharp for a very long time. And I just maintain the edge with ceramic stone

I'd definitely plan taking "some" wood at least with you!

    • @ForrestColeman
      @ForrestColeman Před rokem

      @@MontanaJeff yeah I read that and started thinking…. What a pain it would be to have to pack firewood on the raft. I will be going in May, and on one hand, I think it would be easy to find firewood at the campsites because it is early season and it won’t be picked over yet, but also after the river reaches peak melt off there will be a lot more firewood deposited on the banks of the river. I work in a garden center and carry a mora as my primary knife. Everything is right about it, including the price and weight. SS version to prevent rust because I often work in wet conditions so that helps. And it sharpens up easily. Cutting cordage, some wood, sticks, small branches, pruning, root cutter, digging up weeds. If I lost it I would easily just replace it with another copy. The sheath also doesn't rattle, Which is nice.

    I know Sorel had a lot of problems with these boots when they were no longer made in Canada. I still have my Canadian Sorel boots from the late 70's. I bought a second pair of Sorel's on eBay this year that were from the 80's(never used) and were the Canadian made ones for around 70 dollars. Surprisingly, I checked the link Montana Jeff has for these boots on Amazon and they are rated 4.7 with thousands of purchasers. These new Sorels are made in Vietnam and perhaps they have worked out the problems with the rubber cracking and the boots leaking. Like Rachelle Walters mentioned below, I too am from Northern Idaho and have been here since the early 60's and the Canadian Sorels(these boots actually say handcrafted in Canada) have been great!! I put beeswax on them at the beginning of every winter and never have a leak and my feet stay warm. My boots just don't look as new as Montana Jeff's.

    Rather have that kind of back end than a spike or hammer - much more usefull overall

      Good for you! Keep it up...it'll continue to slowly come off. Take it from me though, learn how to live with other food too. Im feast or famine. So I get off Whole30 and it comes back on.

    There is nothing like the vulcanized rubber. Lasts and lasts. What some use now cracks - not rubber, that's for sure. I have an old pair of pac boots that are 40+ years old and the rubber and leather are still good. Not so with snow boots I've bought since. They crack inside of 2 years.

      Quality across the board definitey isn't what it used to be. I have a pair of the Bear XTs and they SEEM to be pretty good so far!

    300 bucks isn't bad for what your gonna use it for. Alot of decent pocket kinfes are around 200 zt, Benchmade. An they are like 3 in blade.. for the size and design 300 isn't bad. Now the station knife is 1,500 that's too much its a beautiful knife and would do alot in the kitchen but it's 5 times that..

      I agree to a point. For the average user, I think they could get the same use out of a knife 1/3 the price and not know the difference. That said, I have no regrets buying this one. The new version Benchmade has that is half the price just doesn't have the beauty this bad boy has.

    Good video, wish the camera would have focused on the knife more, tough with human face in video! Nice review though

      Thanks! Ya, I got my focus on "eye detection" and need to take that off. It likes eyeballs haha. Thanks for checking out the video!
