Beginner's Garden - Journey with Jill
United States
Registrace 6. 05. 2014
If you're interested in growing your own food, you're in the right place! I'm Jill and I garden in Arkansas, zone 7b. As a beginning gardener in 2013, I found it difficult to find the most basic information for beginning gardeners. Now with ten years of knowledge and experience from my 2500+ square foot garden (consisting of raised beds, ground beds, containers, and a greenhouse), I hope to help beginners find success in their own food gardens. Although I now grow most of the vegetables and herbs our family eats throughout the year, I am still learning, failing, and testing, and I share my ongoing garden journey here as well.

If I was going to grow only one tomato, it would be Amish Paste. Good for slicing and good for sauce. I'm in NW Oregon and I have a greenhouse (made it myself). They do just fine so far as I can see. When we have really hot days (not weeks) I can open the full-sized doors to let the heat out. I do need to keep on top of watering more it seems than outside. The fruits, when sliced, fit nicely on an English muffin. I've used hay bales as an experiment but didn't grow tomatoes. Tomatoes pollinate by vibration from breezes so the toothbrush thing helps I think. I've seen the spray of pollen now and then. My goal is to save seeds so F1 varieties are out. Might try Paisano if it isn't a hybrid.
Hope you feel better soon. Microgreen cilantro was a great tip, they bolt before I get a chance to taste them otherwise.
I am growing corn for the first time this summer. I was absolutely clueless when to harvest. Thank you so much for being so precise!
How do you use lemonbalm
Mostly I use it in teas.
Black ground pepper stops bleeding too.
Thanks. The info I need. When do you know the carrots are ready to harvest?
Thanks for the inspiration! We use a lot of dried oregano but I’ve never thought to dry it. I just went and snipped my plant which is getting ready to flower. Perfect! One thing I’ve been doing this year is collecting and drying dandelion for tea. Now I need to go snip lemon balm and the mint I have growing. Not peppermint but I’m sure it would be good… I let the parsley bloom and it’s attracting all the tiniest pollinators and beneficial insects 😊 I’ll sow the seeds once ripe. I’d love to know your recipe for Italian seasoning! I’m actually trying to grow savory and marjoram this year, which are always on the ingredient list.
My recipe for Italian seasoning is equal parts dried rosemary, thyme, oregano, marjoram, and basil.
Thanks for the this very informative video. I planted an elephant garlic as an experiment which is now in its second year and at the moment, for the first time is producing a seed head. I had planned to leave the plant growing to harvest the seeds, and wondered if that is a good idea?👍 Thanks again for the video.
No Youre a little finger
what do you have planted with your garlic? Thanks for a great video
Very informative. Adverts were to long. So I won't be subscribing
I have aphids, leaf miners, leaf hoppers, fungus gnats, spittle bugs, slugs, white flies and potato bugs to name a few 🫠 They are taking over. I have only seen a couple good guys. One lace wing, one ladybug, and a few hover flies. I was always against pesticides and now I am about ready to get crazy and spray it all with whatever I can haha
My garlic bulbs are tiny I’m not sure how to best make them grow big? More water? I’m not sure what helps it 😢
Thanks for showing the range of: too early, just right, and too late. I think I'll get it right this year, thanks to you!
I do not recommend this channel
Just talking not beneficial waste of time
I like your premise of the chicken tunnel. I couldn’t tell whether the sides sit on the ground or are buried. I found metal zip ties on Amazon. I have a question about your watering system for your chickens….if you only fill it a couple times a year, how often do you clean it. I clean mine every when the weather is hot and I’ve found mold in mine after two days….bacteria can grow really fast in those kind of conditions. It just boggled my mind. Do you treat your water with something?
I have planted many of the crops you listed this year (my second growing a garden) and have used Organic Rev as a drench or root dip or foliar spray for nearly all. I see that Organic Rev now has both a fertilizer (use is straightforward) and a new product called Amp that looks to have similar recommendations for use, but different organic compounds as biostimulants in their formulation. So, my question is: When should I use Organic Rev vs. Amp in my garden?
Thank you for the information! I knew the time was approaching but you counting the layers and explaining about half should be dying back really helped me not pull them too soon. Do you thin your garlic as it grows? I have a few really close together and I am afraid to pull one in fear that the other one or two will come out, but they are so skinny they can't possibly create a good head of garlic. Your thoughts?
I use compost and garden soil in the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 of my grow bags then the top is more potting mix. And definitely mulch to help the top from drying out in crazy Texas heat
I was worried. How do I water my raised bed...hmmmm. Budweiser!!! Hahaha 🤣 Just Relax!!!!
If you harvest the garlic to early can you replant the garlic?
Great video. Do you have a video on how to build the timber frame, please?
Blossom end rot tells me the plants had too much nitrogen. It causes the branches to grow quicker than the root system. When that happens the roots can’t keep up and give all that growth the nutrients it needs to stop blossom end rot
Super instruction! I will be assessing my garlic bed this week! Thanks!
your wire will get your chickens killed. A raccoon can reach through and pull you chickens through that large wire.. also snakes get the eggs. Perhaps your in an area not so predator heavy as mine is. Pine shavings are toxic to chickens!! pine shavings can be toxic to chickens because they contain phenols that could cause issues for the birds . I hope you never come out to mutilated hens. I did once and never again. I have a fortress now. no more chicken wire.. 1/2 in wire. I see disaster ahead. I sure hope im wrong.
A caterpillar keeps eating my basil’s top!
Brilliant idea
Those super-separated cloves could be saved for planting in the fall.
That's precisely what I do ~ but only with the largest cloves.
Of all your new paste varieties which of them have the best flavor? Thanks in advance
This is excellent information … a subscriber keeper … keep up the sharing
I see that you plant both hard neck and soft neck garlic. I have my own preferences, but maybe you could explain the reasons for your choices. I find that hard nech garlic has cloves that are closer in size to each other and much easier to peel and use while soft neck garlic has cloves that keep getting smaller as you get to the center of the bulb until they become largely unusable. I'd like to know your reasoning, and whether you consider one type better than the other or just mostly equal.
Yes!
thank you for the follow up. I made one of these!
We built four 4x8x2 self wicking beds last year. Instead of lining the beds with Plastic we bought four 330 gallon IBC totes and cut them in half to make two 4x4 “tubs”. We then put a “U” shaped section of slotted 4” drain pipe in the bottom to distribute the water. We inserted a piece of 1-1/2” PVC pipe in the center of the “U” to fill the reservoir. We filled the bottom with course River sand instead of gravel. We did not put weed fabric between the sand and the soil. I spent many years working for a company that manufactured large filters for large commercial swimming pools. In the early days most of these were “sand & gravel” filters. They had a layer of course ricks in the bottom, medium rocks above that. Then small rocks followed by a layer of course sand then fine sand. After the initial start ups, we never had a problem with the sand being pushed down through the gravel. Each layer would only penetrate at most an 1” or so into the layer below in spite of the fact that the tanks were under pressure. Therefore I knew there was no need for the weed cloth to keep the soil out of the reservoir. You might still want to do it to keep the roots from working their way into the reservoir. I figured any roots that got that far would either be happy because of access to unlimited water or they would get water logged and die. The beds worked great last year. We didn’t do anything to them this year but top dress with Black Cow and plant. So far so good.
Sometimes I use good used tires .. 18 wheelers and large tractor tires. Some might point and say "He's growing in tires!" .. yet look at all those who are growing in plastic pots! The Tires I get for free and I've put 6 mm black plastic in the bottom .. but first I raid a dumpster for good used carpet padding .. that protects the plastic from one side .. then I sift all the dirt so there are very few rocks .. only sand and dirt. I put in the bottom a good roll of 4 in perforated black plastic pipe. I use a small square of landscape material to close off the end of the pipe so debris doesn't get inside. Excess water will find it's way out of the plastic section once the water has reached the level of the plastic inside. You can also do this with a 2 ft x 1 ft x 20 ft. trench dug into the ground. It makes no sense to me to water a garden with a sprinkler system .. while watering the weeds too .. and losing all that water. It's much more efficient to build a wicking system. You can also create little ponds .. part with water .. part with dirt .. and the earth can be shaped to be pleasing to the landscape. I live in Arkansas too .. I grow banana trees and taro among other things .. that gives our place a very tropical look during the summer months.
I tried to do this diy.... let's just say my hose is still used. But it's a simple system and they work.
I live in Michigan. What would you do with the beds for winter time?
Tammy addressed that at the end of the video. Essentially, there is space to allow the water remaining to freeze (and expand) without causing problems, but not having personal experience with that climate, she couldn't speak personally to it. Perhaps someone who has used one in a harsher climate can share their experience.
Her garden is so beautiful and green. She is a sweetheart!
Great info! My first attempt at Sweet Potatoes 🍠 was attacked by some sort of beetle and slugs. 🤷🏼♂️ Gonna have to try again soon, see what I can get to happen.
I’m a new gardener and just signed up for the workshop. Excited to learn! Did you say the weekly newsletter you recommended for beginners was the big bug hunt? I found a website but couldn’t find a way to sign up for a newsletter. Could you share a link?
We were swarmed by blister bugs last year. There were millions of them. They had already completely eaten our potatoes, kale, and beets and were covering the tomatoes and peppers before we caught them. They were so thick you couldn't see the plants. What could we have done organically to save our garden?
Ive been working on a micro ecosystem for benificial garden insects
yeah fill your raised bed with microplastics lol
When do you plant your garlic?❤
Before the first frost October or November
leaf footed bugs are kicking my butt
Honestly I’m worn out with fighting pests on just about EVERY crop. And we don’t have a farmers market in my area. I’m just really over it all. Might just focus on the tiny handful of things that aren’t problematic and buy the rest at the store.
Another video says not to damage/cut the crown in the middle of the lettuce.
I pray for that young white man in the video. His mama is Sata ---ann
She didn't call it "the family garden, her husbands garden, or our garden". She called it hers. Do you see how ungrateful and ego driven most females are? Why would anyone chose to ignore this behavior? And it happens all the time. What a mess.
