Gardner 6LXB 180 Overhaul Part 7 - Heads, Timing and Shiny bits.... Atkinson Borderer
For more information see www.marinepowerservices.co.uk
Welcome to the seventh video of this series, those of you who already follow us will know that the videos we post are normally short clips of an engine running after overhaul or when it first arrives with us. In this series after many requests we will be following the stripdown, inspection and restoration of a Gardner 6LXB from a 1972 Atkinson Borderer. In this video we continue the rebuild by fitting the cylinder heads, completing the timing and getting all the anciliary components on that can be fitting before the injector pump cambox is fitted.

    Only the Brits, could drive a water pump, with a method that is normally only used to drive a distributor. wtf? Very spiffy overhaul, a truly worthy effort to keep a piece of history alive and running!

    Thanks for such a nicely detailed series on the 6LX, made me appreciate all the small design features that gave Gardner its legendary reputation. One thing that puzzled me is why Gardner chose to have modular removable cam lobes, was this for ease of maintenance or for a lower engine profile where they didn’t need to package a cam with bearing races and lobes ?

    Remember working on these engines as an apprentice at a Foden main dealership in 1976 😊

  • @mohabatkhanmalak1161

    We had mostly British hardware upto the late 1960's in East Africa, Leylands, Bedford, Thames Traders, and for engines Petter, Cummins, Lister but I have never heard of Gardner or maybe I was still a little boy to know. Across the road to my dad's workshop in Uganda there was a workshop that serviced army vehicles, and I did see at times those heavy 1950's Scammel recovery trucks. So yes if these Gardners powered those trucks.☘

    You put the water rail on over painted mating surfaces. Explain. I've always heard people say metal on metal so bolts don't loose tension.

    I seem to remember sixty years ago as a young apprentice a crane fell into the sewerage ponds. After it had been pulled out I was given the task of recommissioning the engine. Took the sump off cleaned it up , changed all the filters and after being submerged for weeks the Gardiner engine ran as good as new. Nice to see your video.

    Was the flywheel rubbing plate machined? if so did the flywheel/pressure plate flange need anything taken off to compensate?

    • @MPSVintageDiesels
      @MPSVintageDiesels Před 6 dny

      0.003" Taken off the flywheel plate and the same off the pressure plate to clean up the faces. depth of the flywheel plate altered (as its bolt in) to compensate for it.

  • @cav551
    @cav551 Před 10 dny

    You don't need a lacky band round the front bearing rollers to fit the front cover then?

    • @MPSVintageDiesels
      @MPSVintageDiesels Před 6 dny

      No you dont, there is a lead in on the outer race to guide the rollers as you put the cover on. a lacky band wouldn't work because how would you get it back out of the now sealed up crankcase.

    • @cav551
      @cav551 Před 5 dny

      @@MPSVintageDiesels A sensible design then. You wouldn't need to retrieve it though since it's above the pickup and the scavenge pump has a screen as well. If the engine had a fluid flywheel you wouldn't get that together without holding the rollers in place.

    • @MPSVintageDiesels
      @MPSVintageDiesels Před 15 dny

      Unfortunately Gardner didn't move with the times and were late to the turbocharging fold which allowed the likes of Cummins to get a foothold by offering higher power outputs than Gardner could. By the time Gardner did go turbocharged it was to little to late with some of the last models like the LYT and LG1200 being rushed to market and suffering from reliability issue which tarnished the name that had been known for unrivalled reliability.

    LOL! A light tap... with your favorite sledge hammer. No assembly lube? Is that because you are going to be pre-oiling, or because you just didn't show it? These are really interesting engines. I remember seeing the Gardner logo on busses when I was a kid going to school by bus in the 70s, and to college in the 80s. So these were part of the soundtrack of my teens. I just checked and they'd be Daimler Fleetline which used 6LW, 6LX, and 6LXB. Of course I have no clue which ones I was sitting above at the back of the bottom deck.

    • @MPSVintageDiesels
      @MPSVintageDiesels Před měsícem

      Now this made me laugh. On these the centre main cap which I was aligning in the video is an interference fit in the crankcase. I could sit there beating the crap out of it with a 2oz toffee hammer but you will struggle to get it aligned. Doing it the way I did I know for certain it moves first time, every time and does no harm. Oh and the engine has been lubed on assembly but as you have most likely spotted throughout the series there are steps omitted from what is shown. It's a constant trade off between filming the build and actually getting some work done. If there any steps you would have perticularly like to have seen let us know and I will endeavour to include it on the next engine build. Thanks for watching

      @@MPSVintageDiesels I am fine with it the way it is. To me, an appropriately heavy hammer gives better control. Lower speed and no need to swing it over your head.

    At last - a clear concise explanation of how to do this, by someone who clearly knows his stuff. Absolute magic. I've read how to do this several times, but seeing it done makes it much much clearer. I could watch this over and over.....and will be doing exactly that, thank you. Please do some more on the pump/cambox/governor/timing gubbins.

      Thankyou for your comments. There will be a bit on the pump/cambox etc coming for the 6LXB currently under build but will certainly look at a more detailed video in the near future.

    I do enjoy your vids. I had a 6LX for over 30 years in our boat and in that time we only managed to do 2500 hours! We did however install the newer high compression pistons . That stopped any smoke on start up but the engine didn't sound quite the same. It had slightly lost the Gardner tock, tock, tock noise. Strangely we didn't find any increase in performance with the later pistons but then again I suspect that is down to the quality of the fuel. I was somewhat disappointed to see you paint the whole thing one colour. The factory released them with silver painted sump and crank case and grey block and heads with silver tappet covers. Looked very smart and a work of art. I'm looking forward to the startup

      Thankyou for your comment and glad you are enjoying the series, we have a couple of 6LX's in storage that we will rebuild at somepoint so watch this space. Just for a bit of useless trivia as the topic of colour and paint scheme comes up for Gardner's every now and then on forums etc. There were many many different colour schemes for Gardner's over the years. We have had many though the workshop that were in original paint and these have been black, burgundy red, various shades of grey, blue, green and the list goes on likewise the RNLI spec LW's and LX's used in lifeboats have a build spec that specifically calls for a fully painted crankcase and sump and in other applications, as the crankcases on some LW's were cast iron, they were again painted. On the topic of this engine it has been redone with a fully grey painted crankcase and sump because it was originally. We do sometimes do the crankcases is silver/aluminium depending on the customers preference. If you look at some of the earlier videos for this engine you can see the remains of the red primer and then grey topcoat on the crankcase equally the underside of the sump had areas of grey still hanging on after nearly 52 years. Again thankyou for taking the time to comment and watch the series.

    Nice videos thanks, I would like to hear you talk about the cost of the various rebuild componants and how hard to obtain them, hours that went in to the rebuild etc. cheers

    Well you can get race horses and cart horses. Race horse good for a mile a cart horse good for all day. Gardners are just so well made

    The Pioneer series always amazed me. A relatively small engine, especially compared with American recovery trucks of the period, but the torque and pulling power of the Pioneer is tremendous. 😊

    Just discovered your videos. Brilliant. I have 2 x 6lxbs in a passenger ferry. Lovely engines. She gets pulled up for the winter. When I start them for the first time in a couple months I get that noise of 1 or 2 valves sticking every time without fail. After that I don't hear it again for the rest of the season.
