Making a custom set of white pearls
Our client is graduating in psychology next week, and with covid delays wanted to really spoil herself for the day with something memorable and keep-able.
We spent a few days emailing options and ideas and then finally the pearls hit the workbench.

white south sea pearls, from parcel to finished piece
zhlédnutí 72Před 3 lety
Pearlescence got a consignment of white south sea pearls in last wednesday and we made a video of their journey from arrival(yes, that's me scrabbling in the bubble wrap) to finished necklace, via sorting and arranging, drilling and knotting. We really do do everything right here in our UK workshop Isn't it just a classic, perfect piece? (credit to our publicist Laura Graham for the video)

      it was the tie bar. i really wanted to understand how to get it close to the pearls - and was having so much trouble! I did pretty well on my first try thanks to your help. However, I think I need slightly thinner thread, to really get close in. I love the tie-bar style of clasp and findings, they are so seamless and beautiful! Yours is the only tutorial I have seen that focus on that particular style of hardware with the knotting! Thank you so much.

    My only concern , is that pulling them together too tightly , will result in an unnatural stiff strand , and not move freely enough . As the owner of several strands too tightly knotted , I can say this is highly undesirable . Experience and caution should prevail. Besides that , a good tutorial . Thank you.

    Thanks for the tutorial. I ended up with a small gap in the silk near the last three pearls even though I kept the pearls tight. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. Do you know if this is a common mistake for beginners and why it happens?

    • @meganmills6545
      @meganmills6545 Před 7 lety

      Look into stretching your silk prior to using it, you may need to do this to ensure that your strand stretches as little as possible after it is made. It will always stretch a little so try to get all your knots super-close to the pearls you're making them up against and very tight. You want them tight and right (that is, in the right place). When finished your necklace may not hang smoothly and look a bit kinked if you've strung the whole thing tight and right. However that will naturally stretch out after you've worn it a couple of times. Store your necklace flat, too, storing them "hung" makes them stretch even more and the gaps between the knots get bigger. Another point, if you don't pre-stretch your silk then as your silk stretches later the knots get smaller (they all do anyway) but, if they were too loose to start with, they can get so small that some slip inside the pearl.

    • @Pearlescenceltd
      @Pearlescenceltd Před 7 lety

      Thank you for your comment. However since the silk we use is plied (twisted for strength, like knitting wood) it does not need pre-stretching. And in any case, if larger pearls are used we switch to synthetic where there is no stretching. Real silk will invariably fail over time, as it is a natural fibre, which will absorb sweat and other moistures in wear.. If this happens a lot to you, switch to synthetics. High performance Griffin is very good, or if you use the two strand method, then we recommend Beader's Secret

      otto joao sometimes. Usually when the bit is blunt..they only last for a few pearls. Obviously you feel the heat immediately and stop for a minute or so.

  • @marygenereux1844
    @marygenereux1844 Před 9 lety

    I thought this was very good but I would like to know the rule of thumb as to how much thread to length of necklace and what size of thread you used. Do you pre stretch the thread since you use silk. Does it ever stretch after made?

    • @wendygraham4337
      @wendygraham4337 Před 9 lety

      The griffin silk comes with a 2m length attached. That is about two necklaces and a bracelet. We use size 4, which means we have to enlarge the first and last three drill holes to 1mm by drilling (separate video) We don't bother to pre-stretch these days as it doesn't seem to make a difference with the Griffin which is twisted like plied wool for strength - or we use synthetic for very heavy pearls and that, of course, doesn't stretch. Real silk will stretch eventually because of wear, through time. It's time to re-string when you can move the pearls back and forth between the knots - it means that the silk is wearing out. It's a natural material, that's what it does. I saw a necklace of HM the Queen's with play between the pearls. It made my fingers itch!
