Escaping the global chemical fertiliser shortage!!

Over the course of a couple of months we have gathered together lots and lots of composting materials. We have mixed all these ingredients together and over time turned the pile inside out to add oxygen. This helps keep the bacterial and microbial communities alive and active. This army of tiny beings use the carbonations material as food and help to break it down into beautiful compost which w...
Our first year farming our small holding in Ireland
zhlédnutí 7KPřed 2 lety
2021 in Review - Follow the journey of our first year on the farm as our young family take a big step into small scale regenerative agriculture. Having no previous farming experience, 2021 was a year with a massive learning curve with many ups and downs. We are delighted to close the year having kicked off numerous projects and while we struggled at times, we have come to the end of the season ...
Building our first Chickshaw XL
zhlédnutí 1,6KPřed 2 lety
So we decided to get some laying hens. Thinking we had 3 weeks before we needed to worry about eggs arriving we thought we had loads of time to build our ‘Chickshaw’. For those of you who haven’t came across this term before, a chickshaw is rickshaw for chickens. The chickshaw is the night time refuge for the hens to sleep safely at night and a place for them to lay their eggs in in the day. It...

zhlédnutí 1,7KPřed 3 lety
The time has finally come to process our pasture raised chickens. It is incredible how quick these birds grow. In 8 short weeks they are ready to process and get into the deep freeze so as our family can enjoy quality chicken produced on our own small piece of Ireland. This was the most we have ever attempted in one day so we are under pressure. It was a long day but so worth it in the end. It ...
S1:E17 Sheep and pigs running a muck!!
zhlédnutí 1,1KPřed 3 lety
This weeks sees us having to reassess our fencing system. The pigs and sheep are causing issues by finding any way out of their fences at any opportunity. We also get set up for chicken processing. We finally get around to clearing out the shed and the baa-ternaity ward and get things back to some sort of normality. The weather has been up and down but warm enough to get into the river for a we...

The weather has been all over the place of late and the frost subsided only to bring in weeks of rain. Now that the sun has come back out the grass has started to grow and time for the chickens to graduate to their new lodgings out on pasture. We have been busy setting up and preparing for a seamless stress free transition for the chickens from indoor life to an outdoor life. It is great to see...

Another exciting week on the homestead. Summer has finally arrived but it still feels like early spring with the weather being so cold and wet. We finally get our massive boat trailer off the farm and to a new home where it will be given a new lease of life. Our pigs have been given free roam of their new pig paradise. This was long overdue but due to unseasonably cold weather we decided to wai...
S1:E12 100 New baby chicks, kayaking & addressing our rush problem
zhlédnutí 955Před 3 lety
It is the end of spring and we are getting ready for the summer even though it still feels like the start of spring. Freezing night time temperatures have stunted grass growth so it would be great if summer brings some warmer temperatures. I trial a new tactic of reducing our rushes on the pasture. We go to collect 100-day old chicks form the hatchery and bring them home to their new brooder. W...
S1:E11 More lambs arrive and we get to grips with electric netting and frequent pasture moves
zhlédnutí 1,1KPřed 3 lety
This week we purchase 5 new pet lambs and we get to grips with moving the sheep to a fresh pasture every day or two. The nets can be tricky when just starting out but every day we get better and quicker. The system is working very well so far. The sheep love to get onto fresh grass and the moves can be very lively. The veggie garden has been taking a back seat recently as there are so many othe...

Come with me as I make bottles for the pet lambs and bring the sheep and lambs in for the night. As well as the evenings now getting warmer and longer the lambs are getting stronger and more robust so this chore is soon to be come redundant. The sheep are so obedient and calm as they make their own way to bed for the night. It is a joy to do this job when everything runs so smoothly. We also ta...

The digger has arrived to clean up and improve drainage and road ways all across the farm after years of neglect. Hopefully with this big push it will give us a kickstart in the right direction. This might alleviate some of our drainage issues and access issues. Here’s hoping 😃

Ah great to see you have a new video out, I'm a bit late to the party but glad to see it. Big development with the tunnel, looks good. Hopefully the foot heals quickly. Good to have you back uploading videos again.
So lovely to see another video from you. I watched a few a while back and I need to go back and watch them all. You have a good and natural way about you with the videos. I watched the video earlier of you putting the drainage in around the land and I was going to ask on there how that went as we have quite boggy land and want to know how to sort it out a bit. Having just watched this one it looks like you still have a lot water around. Is it possible to stop that happening or is it just one of those things when you live in Leitrim or close by? 😂 I agree with another commenter in that you deserve a whole lot more subscribers, they are great videos and I have learnt lots just from the few that I have watched. It’s great to see how much you have done from the beginning videos. I’m a bit of a hoarder too, you never know when you might need stuff eh? Such a shame with the fox trouble that you have had too 😢 we are clearing our land at the moment with the intention of having animals and it’s something that I hate the thought of…losing animals like that. We’ve been told about the pine martins and keeping the housing secure. Good to hear that the electric fencing for the hens is working out well. That’s what I think we will be looking at doing too. Long way to go yet for us, just at the beginning now. What a wonderful life for your little ones. I hope you get to the 1000 very soon!
Wow! That’s some back breaking work there! It really does look incredibly peaceful up there though 😊
With regard to your subscriber count. May I suggest using a profile picture rather than the CZcams D. I saw a comment from you on another video and I almost didn't click on you because I assumed you'd have no videos. Also uploading regularly would help, even just a short video once a week or twice a month would go a long way. Difficult when you're flat out, I know. This is a fantastic channel and more people need to find it. All the best.
👍👍👍.
Hey bit late but I live in Ireland myself how possible is it to actually start up your own small farm it has been a dream of mine for ages
Lovely videos. Fair play to you and your family. Inspirational
Put a dab of stockholm tar on new born lambs keeps the fox at bay,you should get a crew in with a hound pack that are hunting covers tbey will wipe out your fox problem.
I'll spread the love ❤️ Great to c u all enjoying your farming lifestyle 🎉
Thanks Bren. I see your making the most of the summer over there. Could do with some good weather here. 2 storms in 48 hrs 😭
Good to see you back you've clearly been working away and thriving
Ah thanks very much.
Love it 🙌👏
Good to see you again
Thanks very much. I had a look through your channel and you are doing a great job down there yourself. How did the mole plough go for you? I’m thinking of doing something similar here myself.
Delighted to see this channel super job 💪🌾
Good man good to see you back.
Well done Eanna😊
Thanks very much. 👍🏻
Looking well Diff, ya sly Fox.
Good man Ronan!! 👍🏻
Good to see you back with a video. Keep her lit!
Thanks very much. I’ll do my best 👍🏻
What company Mulcher we’re you using
I actually couldn’t tell you. I had a local man come in and do it. I’ll see if I can find out for you.
You quit the videos?
❤️
More content please
Well, im like minded and in a similar position in many ways by the looks of your videos. Id like to see a quick farm update if posdible? Also I'm interested to hear how you balance work, family and farm. As we have just bought a do'er upper on 10 acres and it's a duanting prospect in many ways. Best of luck 👍
Sorry only getting back into the swing of things now with youtube. That’s a good idea about the work life balance video To be honest it isn’t great. Time is our biggest enemy but it has gotten better with small improvements as we go along. How has you you gotten on with your 10acres over the last year. Bit by bit is the key but that is easier said than done. Also manage your expectations. I thought I would be on the farm full time and flying it by now but in reality that might be years from now. 😂
Will ya upload some more
Any update from 2022 coming Enjoyed your video's
Defo due a catch-up video lad
I hope to start back in the new year. Been a busy year here this year but have loads of content. Just have to edit it and put it up. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
@@diffleysfamilyfarm5765 great stuff , watched a few months back and off on the holidays now made you come to mind, enjoying it and been interested to see how you got on after the mulching, best of luck
best way to get rid of rushes is Lime, fertiliser, Cattle and a weed wiper with Glysophate
Well done Eanna- hard slogging!
When is the next video?
Nice to see Roscommon again :)
It is a lovely place when the sun is shining. Are you a native??
Amazing well done
Eager to see more videos in the future
Hi there Tiarnan. Thanks very much for watching. There are more videos coming soon enough now that the season is coming to a close. I have the content shot I have just not edited it. This year has been a extremely and I just haven’t had a minute to sit down and get it done. I’m encouraged by comments like this and I just need to sit down and smash out some videos. Hope you enjoyed and thanks for your support 👍🏻
@@diffleysfamilyfarm5765 I imagine filming and editing is tough when you're trying to get stuff done, I was only worried you'd stop altogether. If you were ever looking for things to cover, I'd be interested to see the application process for herd numbers, flock numbers, how to get your animals processed at an abbatoir, the rules and regulations around home kill birds etc. I come from a non-farming background but hoping to do what you're doing in the future but there's not a lot of information out there or I'm looking in all the wrong places. Love the channel, keep it up 👍
@@diffleysfamilyfarm5765how's the editing going? I've just finished rewatching the whole lot start to finish, really enjoyed it again.
Sad face 😞, just ran out of your content to watch. Really enjoyed following your journey. Hoping there's more content to come. Best of luck with it.
Well I’m sure you’ve learned a lot since this video but a few tips I’d have for ya is never put your hand on the back of a lambs head when you’re trying to get it to suck, that’s where the reverse gear on a sheep is. 😅 When you’re trying to get it to take the bottle place a milk coated finger in its mouth first and if it’s sucking your fingers itll take the bottle can wedge top of the bottle in then. One thing about being a farmer you’ll come to learn is you never know it all and from what I’ve found is the local co-op or local farmers are always great places of advice. Really enjoyed watching the series lad. I started 7 years ago and it really is a great lifestyle.
What size flail mower he using?
Unless you do some serious drainage it won't grow shit
I’m beginning to see your not wrong 😂
How do u kill the bird?by hand. Didn't see it .and how's the sale price?
Unreal amount of work. It has to have improved a lot of your drainage issues. It must look a different farm now and when you first moved in. More power to you and your family
Well done! A great achievement 💪 Unreal 👍
I hope you found out and sorted your electric fencer issues. A good few earth bars and keep vegetation off the lines. You've plastic posts and egg insulators so can't be that No fun when animals breaking out
I have somewhat sorted out a lot of the issues but still not 100% not as much breaking out this year thankfully but you can never drop your guard. 😂
Good luck
Hiya there l,ove the video! My partner and I have just bought an old farmhouse in Kerry and the land surrounding it is dense with mature rushes as the farmer kept cows on the land. Can you recommend how to go about hiring someone to cut the rushes ? I've not a hope of growing veggies on the land if its filled with rushes 😅
Is that Leitrim? Very nice video
Luckily we are on the right side of the water here in Roscommon. 😂😂 The bottom of the farm by the river is actually the exact point where Roscommon, Longford and leitrim meet. A lovely part of the world. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
If you could get your hands on a few bags of Bacterisol powder and mix into the pile of fym and rotten hay you will have brilliant well innoculated compost to spread.
Ah cool. I must look into that. Might be a bit late for this year as I won’t be turning it again but I’ll be doing this every year I suspect. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Did the same last year, lovely job getting the rap off. Got it spread last week and chain harrower in. btw when you chain harrow it you can get the last of the plastic gathered up.
Very good. Yea I have most of the plastic picked up over the last year and hope this batch will be mostly plastic free. Delighted I have it nearly ready to spread now. I don’t think the locals will be so generous with their farm yard manure this year 😂 Thanks very much for watching 👍🏻
