Walter Gropius
1937
In 1937 the German architect Walter Gropius arrived with his family in the United States. After receiving a job offer from Harvard University, he settled in Lincoln, Massachusetts, a half-hour drive from the university campus. On this site the founder of the Bauhaus will build his own house, a project of modest scale, but of great impact in the architecture of the twentieth century.

In 1937 the German architect Walter Gropius arrived with his family in the United States. Yeah but aside from just looking cool, it's lost on everyone that it's a failure as a house by all measures. It's tough to heat, had no A C., constant structural problems, and I think it'd be rather difficult to live out of for two days even. It's good for cocktail parties. That's all. You can't call it a "house" unless, by some stretch, it could actually be lived in.

Tiene algo (bastante) de monasterio de clausura. Entiendo y aprecio el esfuerzo intelectual del arquitecto y su estilo de vanguardia (rompedor) y su gran influencia en el tiempo pero prefiero espacios más abiertos al exterior. tanto muro alto (en mi opinión claro está) oprime

La verdad, nunca pagaría por vivir en una de esas frías y feas casas diseñadas por ciertos arquitectos afectados por el reduccionismo racionalista. El ser humano es más que la sola razón, ¡tenemos otras cualidades...! Y nuestros hogares no son máquinas de habitar. Son mucho más que eso y no se debe olvidar.

I am surprised that you did not mention his Villa Tugendhat in Bohemia (1930, Brno). It is one of the few family houses that is included in the UNESCO list. It is wonderful!

Seriously? You guys would need a whole lot of time on the frank Lloyd Wright houses and structures he built. Of the top of my head: the Millard house, the David Lloyd Wright house in Arizona, the Martin house, the house he built in Stanford, the Marin County civic center, the Johnson wax building and tower, any of his house in Buffalo. The hollyhock house, the monano center in racine, I don't know if you mentioned Taliesin. Or the 2 or so houses he built in Minnesota, although I think they moved one to Pennsylvania.
Your videos contain great information, but the robot voice is terrible. Makes my mind wander from an otherwise incredibly fascinating topic.

Approaching modernist architecture from any aspect other than socialism is so misguided as to be repulsive, but Mies did the same thing for modernism that Ralph Lauren did for Brooks Brothers; he made it special. Really can’t deny it- it’s truly an exquisite statement.
