    Hi please can you tell me what type of tool you are using to hold the clutch basket,and where you purchased it from please? I have seen a similar one on ebay but it states that it is not for use on a reversed inner clutch hub, and i don’t know if that is the type of clutch on my son’s 2020 Ninja 125. Thanks

      Hi yes, the re-chromed forks are fantastic quality and the chrome layer is way thicker and more consistent than the original fork finish so I would really recommend, only came in at £150

    Wish I still had my R80/7. Mocked it up like a R90S. PUT R100 Jugs on it,braced the swing arm,Lester mags, Alfabet 2into One,drilled airbox.R90S faring .Best Motorcycle I ever owned.

      Sounds fantastic, the R80/7 is arguably the smoothest and nicest ride of the airheads, enough power but not stressed so long lived and the heavy flywheel was much better for the low down torque than the clutch carrier that came later. Had to take a break but another video is on the way.

    Did the bike you describe have a supercharger? They never made 55 hp and could barely reach 110 MPH. Yours has some nice but non original features including duel disks, and cast wheels, unless they were Euro standard

    • @SpokenSpanner
      @SpokenSpanner Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Steven, thanks for your comment, yes the bike was supercharged. As for mine, it was supplied by Motobaldet who were known for dealer specials. I believe the snowflake wheels were stock for UK bikes but certainly the twin disks and the full Keihin stainless exhaust were additions. My next video will be up shortly on rebuilding the damper rods and stanchions followed by assembly of the front end and making sure there is no stiction. I will also be positing a full brake restoration, carb sonic clean and rebuild as well as tuning and the separation of the gearbox in situ to clean and lubricate the input splines. Glad you are enjoying the videos.

    • @DAVJULART
      @DAVJULART Před dnem

      @@SpokenSpannerI think you'll find that you have a stock 55 horsepower 1979 R80/7 which came with alu-wheels and twin front discs as standard UK export model. My old man had one identical from new and I've just imported one from Italy. For insurance reasons the 50hp model was made for the German domestic market. The 55hp model was available for Police use and for export.

    Having replaced the original Bosch starter in my R50/5 I know how difficult they are to get out! I bit the bullet and went for a non-original Nippondenso replacement, which appears to weigh about half the Bosch and is used in Toyota pick-ups. I also swapped out the points for a Boyer electronic ignition unit, again not original but life is too short! 😊

    • @SpokenSpanner
      @SpokenSpanner Před rokem

      Hi Steve, that is interesting, having read about the interference issues and for authenticity I wanted to stay with a Bosch unit... Like a Bosch! although the weight saving you refer to is always welcome, I put a Lithium Ion battery in my R1200 and it significantly reduced the weight when lifting off the stand. On the ignition front as you saw, replacing the points and gapping them resulted in an instant start - initially on one cylinder and I was so shocked I forgot to keep the plug grounded other than through me. As it all seems to work so well and the bike miles are so low I thought I would stick with the standard setup and the benefits of being able to complete roadside repairs. I know a lot of owners with electronic ignition also carry their old bean can in case of trouble. Time will tell when it is on the road as to whether components fail on age rather than mileage, the selenium rectifier is one concern but I have read that they tend to expire on extent of use rather than age. Once it is up and running I shall also try out some mods such as the pulse jet ignition and see if I can make some dyno and subjective assessments as to the benefits. So far the only mod I am planning to fit during the refurb are damping rubbers between the fins as this was done on later mods by BMW themselves.

    I bought my 1984 R80st as an unknown condition runner. Turned out it had been thrown together from the other side of the garage and needed everything! Having given it everything it needed it's never missed a beat and is a joy to ride. I'm sure this bike of yours will be the same. 🙂 (One thing to note though is to stick to genuine BMW clutch cables.) ---- Excellent video. Looking forward to more!

      Thanks for your comment most appreciated, please post a picture of your bike. I think the airhead BMWs sound glorious, maybe I will be smitten and have to keep it! Noted on the clutch cables, I am clearly going to have to replace the brake cable. Did you do the conversion to move the master cylinder to the handle bar? The clutch is not apparently stuck but is quite heavy but I think that is normal, will find out more when it is up and running. Next video is in production and will be aiming to get her running before moving on to the cycle parts.

      @@SpokenSpanner Hiya! Mine already has the master cylinder on the bars. Standard for the model and age I believe. Google the bike and you'll see red ones and silver ones: The only two colours available for the ST's short run of two years. Mine's red and completely standard. I did some of the work myself but as I got further into it I thought it would be better done by a specialist. He's a very well respected chap in north Kent, Jim Cray. He used to race them back in the day and what he doesn't know........ etc. As for a picture of mine...... I've no idea how to do that on here! Dinosaur? Oh, yes. Rather!

    • @SpokenSpanner
      @SpokenSpanner Před rokem

      Hi Steve, you will see in the video when I cover the brakes that the original master cylinder was so seized that it could not respond to any attention, eventually I hammered out the piston. A new pattern one is £390. I didn't really want to move the master cylinder to the handlebars as the kits for this when available are only second hand and I like the cushioned dash that would otherwise have to go. Luckily a fellow forum member who had bobberised his R100 sold me his functioning MC and I am rebuilding that and adding Goodrich hoses and a new cable. I get that you lose something having a hydraulic cylinder operated by a cable but it is very clean styling.
