Why Do Some Fans Hate Kate? - LOST Episode Guide: Tabula Rasa
The LOST Explained episode guide is a deep dive retrospective into ABC's seminal television series LOST. Join me as I explore, explain and critique the series episode-by-episode, mystery-by-mystery.
This time we are delving into the very first Kate-centric episode and how Kate, for reasons we shall get into, became a somewhat divisive character. Even to the actress playing her. Also, does 'Tabula Rasa' still hold up as an episode? Do the questions raised within it ever get answered? Let's find out.

    Doesn't help that the showrunners were openly sexist. When asked which three people he would want to spend time on the island with? I recall he told a fan he would choose Kate because he wanted some eye candy. And now all the revelations that came out in the new book about misogyny and racism and so on the production of the show... It's definitely disappointing

    Thank you for all your hard work. I've not found a better definitive explanation of one of THE best shows - EVER. For me there's Twin Peaks, X-Files and Lost. I was lucky enough to be alive to witness these phenomena as they happened. In today's world of streaming it's almost impossible to explain to today's young adults just the emotional roller coaster we went through at the end of every episode knowing we had at minimum a whole week before getting any more answers. It led to great discussions and yes arguments. The X=files hit it's stride at the dawn of the internet and I remember the hours and hours of discussions we had and we got to do it again with Lost. Does anyone today remember the screams at the cliff-hangers of the season enders knowing we had MONTHS to wait for a new episode? It was quite the rush. I can remember show nights - hours before it aired discussing last weeks episode and what we thought was going to happen tonight - then an hour of silence as we watched followed by thousands of Holy Sh*t's for the first 5 minutes when the episode ended before hours of discussing what we learned and what new questions we were left with. I can only hope that again in my lifeetime another show will appear that will generate such discussion and love. Till then at least we have the DVD's to rewatch some amazing story telling and can still find each other on online discussion groups to continue debates and change our minds as we age and our perception changes. Till then.........

      It was a golden age for watching shows like this. I feel so lucky to have been around to see it too, long before streaming effectively put an end to the classic format of releasing one episode per week. The Netflix generation is used to instant gratification now, which makes every show bingeable yet also disposable at the same time. The kids today will never know how rewarding all of the waiting and delayed gratification actually was. The wait between episodes is where the magic of these shows really took on a life of its own.

      @@LOSTEXPLAINED108 exactly. It was palpable. As mentioned it started for me on X-files boards. and then Lost upped the anti. I met my late husband on an X-files board so we always had a fun love story to share. I also miss DVD's - the xtra's that came with those dvd's could provide answers along with fun things to do, games etc. You just don't get that anymore. I always worry that a show I enjoy (Like Lucifer - my guilty pleasure will one day be gone and I enjoy watching them so I made sure to pick up the dvd's but I don't know if all shows even make them anymore. Thanks for all the really hard work you do on this show. I've decided - in honour of your episode guide to watch the episdoe in question before watching your talking about it. Thanks for putting such amazing work into this series.

      Thank you so much for watching and your great comments 🙏 I totally agree with what you were saying too. I miss the DVD releases as well, where all of those great extra features like audio commentaries and behind-the-scenes docs would fill in so much trivia of how it all came together. I’ve started buying physical media again when it comes to movies and TV shows I love. But you’re right, there are some movies and shows that will never get DVD releases in order to keep them exclusive to the streaming platforms online that own them.

    Kate was my favourite character, she was a brilliant character. I never understood why her crime was made to be this terrible thing, she saved her mom and herself from a violent abuser - i saw this story as a reflection of double standards.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 Před 23 minutami

      I think whichever way we look at it, Kate still committed murder. Yes, Wayne was a horrible, abusive sleaze. I wasn’t sorry to see him go boom. But she didn’t kill him in a moment of self-defence or in a way that the law might take a sympathetic view on. It was a very carefully planned premeditated act of cold blooded murder. And Kate was treated like any premeditated killer, it didn’t matter what her motives were. So, while I view her crime as understandable in many ways, it was treated as a terrible act by the law for justifiable reasons. Her mother saw it this way too, which is why she called the cops on her own daughter. Kate’s actions were ultimately wrong. As the great philosopher Buffy Summers once said: you can’t beat evil by doing evil.

      Question for you. My 12 year old son is watching the show for the first time and is just starting season 6, do you think it’ll be easier to follow for him if I tell him what the secondary story is or let him wait and find out? Just curious

      I would let him watch it through for the first time without any spoilers or explanations. Let him experience it purely so he can get the full impact of the surprises. After it ends, if he has questions or confusions then you can start discussing the details with him. The show opens up lots of thought avenues, no matter what the age. I think he will have questions but within those questions lie the most rewarding conversations that you can have between the two of you. That would be my advice :-)

    Good video - showing Kate was a powerful and strong but flawed character that became a key part of LOST as Lilly grew into the character and made it her own. The few people I knew who hated Kate were women. Maybe some of them saw Kate in themselves? I see parts of myself in Hugo, Locke and Jack. I had no idea that originally Jack was to be killed off and essentially replaced by Kate. Glad the showrunners decided to change that.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 Před 7 hodinami

      Initially when crafting the Pilot episode, the idea was to introduce Jack as the lead then kill him off at the end of the episode. They wanted to cast Michael Keaton in the role and build a lot of the promotional material around his star casting, only to then pull the rug out from beneath the audience. Basically, what happens to the Pilot in the cockpit is what would have happened to Keaton’s Jack. Killed by the monster and his pulverised body dropped in a tree! But the network put the kibosh on that idea. Like you, I’m glad that never happened! It would have been a shock but it also would have robbed the show of a character who the series came to be built around. Fascinating part of the show’s early development process though!

    I never thought much about Sawyer missing the heart. To me it was just someone who, like a lot of people, had the wrong idea of where the heart is. The heart is closer to the center of the chest than most people think. But Sawyer didn't know that so he shot the Marshal's left lung instead.

    It amazes me how this show progressed from being stranded on a mysterious island to the spiral stories that stitched together by the final episode. At first I found myself disliking Kate but it had more to do with her romantic flip flop (Skate or Jate?). After rethinking it, my dislike has more to do with who Kate became when she was with either guy. I liked Kate when her stories weren't about the guys in her life on or off the island. Those were her better moments imo.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 Před 8 hodinami

      I agree - Kate was always at her most compelling when she was dealing with her own baggage and storylines. I think the writers recognised this (eventually) and made Kate’s main mission in the final two seasons about going back for Claire. Kate’s whole arc was about getting her to stop running away and to stand and face her past actions and mistakes, but she didn’t really get to start doing that until the latter half of the series. I agree she was kept in stasis with the love triangle, but so were many other aspects of the general storytelling during that period.

    • @rahbeeuh
      @rahbeeuh Před 6 hodinami

      @@LOSTEXPLAINED108 so glad the writers eventually realized how to develop Kate as her own character. I agree that other aspects at the start were also in stasis. I think Kate not being set in a specific place was another part of why I initially didn't like her. When I understood that was part of her character I liked her character more. I tend to have trouble seeing the bigger picture but once I got a grasp on it I think it helped me understand better (even the show). Makes for a better viewing experience imo.

Glad you are planning to do a montage of Sawyer's nicknames, they always bring just a little bittersweet and very much loved pinch of... Sawyerness...

    Kate is one of my all-time favorite female protagonists. I did not like her in the Hobbit movies though. Due to the character, not her acting.

  • @Buffy8Fan
    @Buffy8Fan Před 8 hodinami

    SPOILERS FOR _LOST_ (OBVIOUSLY), _FORREST GUMP_ AND _INSIDE OUT 2_ I always viewed the hate Kate attitude (at least from what I've seen) from fans as some of them thinking her playing people against each other is a flaw in the writing when it is her character's attitude because she is on the run. The same thing happens with _Forrest Gump_ fans hating on Jenny for her childhood effecting why she doesn't stick around with Forrest. Both characters have have reasons behind their bad behavior, but are still critisized by some without those some understanding why they act that way. You might as well say Riley in the Inside Out 2 movie is evil. It just doesn't work that way.

      @buckdancer8916 Před 7 hodinami

      I still think Jenny was pretty mean to Forrest it’s not like he had it easy either she was obviously traumatised but that doesn’t excuse all bad behaviour Xander Harris often alludes to absent parents his still a jerk to Cordy and Willow and Anya !

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108

      I agree that some audiences tend to conflate intentional character flaws with flaws in the actual narrative or the writing itself.

    • @Buffy8Fan
      @Buffy8Fan Před 7 hodinami

      @@buckdancer8916 Xander Harris sticks around to yell at his friends and hold their issues against them (not just who you mentioned, but Buffy, Giles, Riley and others, as well). Jenny deals by not being around and, sadly, that is how she needs to get better. Perhaps Forrest could have helped, but he also live too close to where it all happened. And Jenny clearly has trouble with that. Forrest also didn't comprehend exactly what happened. It's not a coincidence that Xander's true turning point of dealing with his issues starts in the comics after Sunnydale is destroyed (the place where his dad was abusive). The same works for Jenny as well. Both characters issues are understandable even if pepople don't always like their actions. And that was the point of my original comment: the difference between intentional character issues and actions vs writing flaws.

    I'm just starting the video, but I have to say that "They made it up as they went along!" is a funny criticism. That's true of pretty much every series. When George Lucas made Star Wars he didn't yet know precisely everything that was going to happen in the next 2 movies. He hadn't definitively decided on Vader being Luke's father, for example. Or that Leia was Luke's sister. When Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, he had no plans for a sequel. Bilbo's magic ring was not the One Ring, the Necromancer of Mirkwood was not Sauron. Until he wrote The Lord of the Rings. When CS Lewis wrote his Ransom Trilogy or the Narnia series, he made up each story as he came to it, yet each series is a cohesive whole. Though I haven't read it, many people love Steven King's Dark Tower series, even though he was making it up as he went along and didn't know the ending when he started the series, and even went back and rewrote the 1st book to fit better with the rest. Even when someone has a general outline of how their planned series is going to go, they don't know every detail along the way until they actually take the time to write it, and even then some parts of the original plan can change. So in the end, even if the showrunners of Lost didn't have any ideas of where they wanted to go with the series, that wouldn't automatically make it a badly written series. Such a ridiculous criticism.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 Před 14 hodinami

      I agree with what you're saying, that every long-running story is ultimately decided piecemeal and any changes/alterations to that narrative are par for the course. That is just how writing a story over the course of many years, movies or episodes works. You can have a general outline of where it is all going, but anything can happen to change the direction of that outline, especially in the television world. Although I think this particular criticism about LOST is slightly more complex. To cannibalise a response I made to another comment on this video: When viewers ask if LOST was made up as it went along they are really asking if the writers knew where the story was going. Did their story follow the pathway of an actual plan or did they make it up without any real planning at all? And if there was no real plan then why did the writers say there was? Does that make the answers we got to long asked questions a bit of a bait-and-switch? This is what is at the heart of the debate surrounding how the show came together and why I felt it necessary to make a video breaking down the various evidence inside and outside of the show. For a long time, it's been a very binary argument between fans and detractors of the series and I wanted to make it clear in video-form exactly how the show was put together, and why it's not a simple yes or no answer.

    Eventually you should acknowledge that in season 1 in the dharma video he said that an incident happened after the swan was already built, when in season 6 we see that the incident happens before the hatch is created. The hatch really makes no sense in this context because how could they hook up the computer to the reactor to discharge the magnetism from the incident if the incident happens before the computer and reactor are created? Edit: I know the hatch isn’t the topic of this video but this is a question I’ve been wondering and I feel like you’re an expert who can answer.

      We get the DHARMA orientation in Season Two. I have actually explored this very subject in my video on DHARMA, Science and Time Travel, which covers Jughead, the incident and the building of The Swan. I know you’re being facetious here but the ending idea of Jack dying was on the cards from very early on, while the actual concept of a “flash sideways” itself probably wasn’t developed until sometime into the weeds of Season Two/Three. And even then they would only have had a sense of what such a concept might look like. Whereas the actual on-island action we see in the finale - a good versus evil fight in the cradle of existence - was always where the show was headed in some form. A lot of these ideas were expressed from the outset, it’s just the journey to get there was complicated. I personally love the ending and everything they did with it. My issues with the show come much earlier in the early seasons.

    *I THINK WALT BECAME THE NEW PROTECTOR WHEN HURLEY DIED HES BECOME THE REPLACEMENT... Thats why if u notice in the finale inside the church, MICHAEL AND WALT IS NOTICEABLY MISSING, THEY ARENT THERE.. why u ask??* Because walt is still alive and currently protecting the island/Light, AND MICHAEL CHOSE TO STAY IN THE ISLAND WITH HIS SON because when they were still BOTH alive THEY DIDNT GET THE CHANCE TO BE TOGETHER SO MUCH, like Walt was taken away from him since birth, and when they got out of the island HE BECAME ESTRANGED WITH HIS SON AGAIN BECAUSE HE CONFESSED TO WALT HE KILLED LIBBY AND ANA LUCIA... SO NOW THAT HES A GHOST AND WALT HAVING THE ABILITY TO SEE THE DEAD, THE FATHER AND SON CAN NOW FINALLY BOND IN THE ISLAND AND BE TOGETHER AGAIN FOR AS LONG AS THEY WANT/CAN.. THAT'S WHY THEY ARE NOT PRESENT IN THE CHURCH ending scene. MICHAEL IS A GHOST TRAPPED IN THE ISLAND NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE ON JUST LIKE THOSE OTHER VOICE WHISPERING GHOSTS IN THERE.. michael talked about it in 1particular episode when he was asked whats those whispers all about, and he confirmed those ghostly voices are from the dead people lingering in the island.. *SO WHAT DO U GUYS THINK OF MY THEORY?? DO U THINK IM RIGHT??* i hope the showrunners and writers of LOST SEES THIS AND SEE MY COMMENT. i hope they take me to make them a screenplay for a SEQUEL for LOST...
