Mark Allen - Low Heart Rate Training was my Secret
Mark Allen, known as "The Grip," is a legendary American triathlete who reigned supreme in the sport during the late 1980s and 1990s. Renowned for his six consecutive Ironman World Championship titles from 1989 to 1995, Allen showcased extraordinary endurance, mental fortitude, and skill across swimming, biking, and running. His 1989 victory, famously dubbed the "Iron War," saw him narrowly defeat his rival Dave Scott in an epic, grueling battle. In addition to his Ironman triumphs, Allen excelled in Olympic-distance triathlons, amassing numerous victories and solidifying his status as one of the sport's all-time greats. His remarkable achievements have earned him places in both the Ironman Hall of Fame and the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame.

TAKEAWAYS:
Training in a way that allows for longevity and prevents burnout and injury is crucial for sustained success in endurance sports.
The Maffetone method, which focuses on training at lower heart rates to develop endurance and fat-burning capabilities, can lead to improved performance and consistency.
Consistent training, patience, and a balanced diet are key factors in achieving sustainable results.
Fueling with fat is not necessary for longer races, as the body has enough stored fat to sustain endurance efforts. Balancing aerobic and anaerobic work is crucial for optimal performance.
Patience and consistency are key in training.
Listening to your body and adjusting training based on individual factors is important.
Using technology, such as heart rate variability monitoring, can help fine-tune training intensity.
Finding the right balance between hard work and recovery is essential for long-term success.

    Racing too much can be a factor but only if you're stressed about every race. Pros will race a lot but only have a few or even just one 'A' race, the rest arr kind of just extra training, not so much the physical but mentally getting used to racing, the taper, getting up early, the traveling, being in a bunch, the atmosphere, etc. Sometimes I'm more stressed with less racing because I want to nail each one.

    Came here as I’m trying to improve as a runner and MAF is so ubiquitous in the running space. I tend to run at a low heart rate and slow pace anyway so figure I could catch some good info. While the MAF method may be a totally viable training strategy, many of Maffetone’s comments on nutrition and metabolism were pretty frustrating to listen to and only serve to further confuse the general public. You don’t become fat from eating carbs, you don’t become skinny from not eating them, this tired argument is so silly. Weight gain/loss, and by extension fatness/leanness, are a function of energy balance. Eat less energy and/or burn more energy, how you choose to accomplish that (low carb, high carb, IF, food logging, etc) in the way that works best for you is the right answer. It’s great that there are so many options for people to try. Putting Dr in front of your name (nowhere on his website does he post his education btw, I had to do some digging to see he’s a chiropractor) and giving such narrow and misguided explanation of how weight loss is accomplished pushes people into apathy because they no longer know what’s right. Whats right is whatever puts you in a deficit and what you can stick to for the long run (pun intended). I see it with my family and friends. People need options, quit confusing them.

    One criticism I have is that it’s not such dichotomy, but rather a continuum, because even when you’re running a tempo you’re still working your aerobic system… even VO2max touches on aerobic system at least for a fraction of a workout… so, it’s hard to argue that every run has to be slow… Also, I’d say that people who activate their fast-twitch fibers absolutely improve their speed…

    • @RelaxedRunning
      @RelaxedRunning Před měsícem

      The thing I don't like about the comment section on CZcams is the way people initiate conversation like this. I bet you're a lovely guy and if we met face to face we could have a great conversation around all things running (and running technique). Obviously there is power generated through shoulder counter osc - however, in order to do this effectively you need to be relatively tension free in your upper body. Tension limits all forms of movement INCLUDING shoulder osc. As I mentioned in this video - these are 3 of many changes we can make to our own running technique. I just watched a couple of the videos you posted of yourself running on your channel and I think 2 or the 3 things I spoke about in this video would help you. 1. Shoulder Blade Tension: I think release of tension through shoulder blades is something that will radically improve your efficiency (both in movement and in feel). 2. Posture: You're stacked slightly back over your hips limiting momentum forward. It's magnified as you increase pace. @TheCuratorIsHere

  • @TheCuratorIsHere
    @TheCuratorIsHere Před měsícem

    2:06 - No. the complete opposite, there is wayyyy more space to breathe when bringing the shoulders back.

    • @RelaxedRunning
      @RelaxedRunning Před měsícem

      Shoulder blades squeezed together not only creates tension, it limits an athletes ability to generate a natural arm swing. I'm not sure if you're joking with this comment - if you sit down, squeeze should blades back (as I mentioned in vid) and take a deep breath - you can feel the difficulty breathing.

  • @sstevogb
    @sstevogb Před měsícem

    nice example with EG, but how come someone like Kerr has what appears to be a far more "forced" 90 degree armswing compared to EG who just as you say let his arms act like mini levers? Great vid using the elites definitely helps !!

    • @RelaxedRunning
      @RelaxedRunning Před měsícem

      Thanks mate! I'm not as concerned about the angle the arm is being carried as I am interested in seeing the range of movement the upper arm generates on a backswing. When I mention the 90 degree angle I was referring to the actual arm carry. I agree that Kerr's actual arm swim appears more forced (when you look at them going back and forth) - but when you see the freedom through the arms you can see there's limited tension (even over last 600m of Pre Mile) as pace increases. Great technique does come in many shapes and sizes based on athlete build and physiology despite there being many foundational element we can all apply to our own running technique. Though EG and Kerr look very different as they run - I think at the bare minimum the three things I mention in this vid are done very well by both.

    Hey relaxed running, how do we get to Dr. Phil to help fix my base running: I've been eating quite well, not the junk food like Tacobell every day or that kind of rate, but not exactly as guided too, I sleep pretty ok averaging 6-8 hours, I do deep breathing for 10-15 min almost every morning and run afterwards 3 medium length run (6km) and 1 long run (13-15km) every week with strength training after my medium run for 30-45min. I've been conducting the base method for almost 8 months now, with just 1 full month break due to fasting. My heart rate is still not consistent meaning I have to literally stop running to adjust my heart rate. So my speed hasn't improved. How long will my base run get the consistency and will eventually improve my speed..

    I do follow his zone 2, low heart rate philosophy, but as a health care professional, I would not call the ketogenic diet "good". Eating healthy carbs is key (legumes, fruits and vegetables). People are consuming huge portions of ALL macros these days. Do we really need to eat a 1 pound steak when a serving size is a deck of cards? It's interesting that he's pointing out carb advertising. I spent 20 yrs just in clinical & raising fam & found myself pre diabetic & arthritis. Cured ALL health issues with Keto. Now I can train longer w/o any soreness & my HrMax is similar to mine 20+ yrs ago on bike. Phil’s been right for decades, but if you want to eat carbage, it’s a free world, well, even that’s debatable now. 😂 Peace
