'Sir John Fenwick's' & 'Smiths are Gallant Firemen'.
'Sir John Fenwick's' & 'Smiths are Gallant Firemen'. Two more 'chicken or egg' tunes i.e. two versions of the same tune. The 1st is the Northumbrian Air, while the 2nd is the Scottish Strathspey. Played on Hammered Dulcimer, English Concertina, Tenor Guitar, Tenor Banjo, Fiddle & Bodhran. Lockdown Video #746.
.
When I played with the Oldmeldrum Fiddlers, our leader was the late Bill Hardie & in his book - 'The Beauties of the North', he explains that - "The 'Smith' in the title is an abbreviation of 'Blacksmith' and refers to those days when, in the event of fire breaking out, the local village blacksmith would be called on to extinguish it."
N.B. The flowers in my photograph are - Rosebay Willowherb, also known as the - Fireweed.

    March, march, Ettrick and Teviotdale, Why, my lads, dinna ye march forward in order? March, march, Eskdale and Liddesdale, All the blue bonnets are over the border. Many a banner spread, flutters above your head, Many a crest that is famous in story, Mount and make ready then, sons of the mountain glen, Fight for your King and the old Scottish glory. March, march, Ettrick and Teviotdale, Why, my lads, dinna ye march forward in order? March, march, Eskdale and Liddesdale, All the blue bonnets are over the border. Come from the hills where your hirsels are grazing, Come from the glen of the buck and the roe: Come to the crag where the beacon is blazing; Come with the buckler, the lance, and the bow. March, march, Ettrick and Teviotdale, Why, my lads, dinna ye march forward in order? March, march, Eskdale and Liddesdale, All the blue bonnets are over the border. Trumpets are sounding, war-steeds are bounding; Stand to your arms, and march in good order; England shall many a day tell of the bloody fray, When the blue bonnets came over the border.

    Hello, I am currently looking for an unknown song and music video that was recorded (not by me) around 1998 on the Turkish television channel TRT as part of the Pop Saati (Pop Hour) programme. The song and video clip: czcams.com/video/ceeyEXGWknQ/video.html The song is not identifiable via Shazam or by googling the lyrics. The video clip was shot at Giants Causeway, and in asking around on internet forums for Irish Northerners, someone said that you were the violinist who appears from 1:31 onwards. I'm wondering if you can confirm whether you are indeed the violinist who appears in the video, and if you can tell me the name of the song and the singer, or if it's not you, do you recognise which violinist is in the video? Thank you very much.

    • @Ptarmi
      @Ptarmi Před měsícem

      The man playing the Violin / Fiddle was the late Dominic McNabb. A local musician from Ballycastle. The tune appears to be modern creation trying to sound like a traditional Irish Reel. ... You can see a video clip of Dominic, in later years, playing in O'Conners Pub in Ballycastle here: czcams.com/video/bbK-_FgeIIs/video.html

      @@PtarmiI have the impression that you knew him. You have no idea of the name of the song or the name of the singer? I sent an email to The Irish News on Friday because a newspaper article about him confirms what you said, but I still haven't had a reply yet. The newspaper article states that he appears wrapped in ropes while playing the fiddle. If you know anyone close to him, could you please show them this video, as they might know the name of this song. I know we don't know each other and I'm asking you something, but please understand, we've been looking for this song for 18 years... Thank you.

    I lived in Troon for 32 years and I moved to Holland 19 years ago. We used to have loads of sparrows but the population declined dramatically. Five years ago two sparrows came to my back door every day for food. They had four babies and then suddenly flew away. They came back in the spring and bought lots of friends. Now after five years I'm looking after a huge number and it's a full time job.😂

    My father had several dulcimers and traveled years across the country teaching and attending various festivals. I love the sound more now he's gone 4 years ago. It's haunting and it sticks with you forever. He hated to tune it; it was never easy and got a help with the task via electronic help; i can't recall what it was called. I have a set of his beloved and beautiful hammers as his gift to me. I listen to his cd a few times a year. I miss him.
