The (Un)Settled Podcast Episode 2: Dan Friday
In today's episode, the Wadsworth's Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture Erin Monroe returns to talk about material culture in the exhibition and why the inclusion of Dan Friday's glass piece, Aunt Fran's Basket, was so special. Then Friday joins host Drew Baron for an interview discussing his work, heritage, and the world of glass art.
Friday has worked with some of the biggest names in the medium -
Paul Marioni, Preston Singletary, and since 2000, he has worked at Dale Chihuly’s renowned studio, The Boathouse. He's taught at the University of Washington, Pilchuck Glass School, and the Haystack Craft Center in Maine. Friday was also featured as a contestant on season three of Blown Away, Netflix's hit glass art competition show. His work fuses glass with inspiration from his Coast Salish cultural heritage, utilizing forms such as bears, salmon, totems, and baskets.
The (Un)Settled Podcast is a multipart special presentation of the Binder Podcast dedicated to the traveling exhibition (Un)Settled: The Landscape in American Art. Part of a series of American art exhibitions created through a multi-year, multi-institutional exhibition partnership formed by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art as part of the Art Bridges Cohort Program.

LOL! Feeling more confident every day and noticing my anxiety dissolve until I knew I was “in control” is definitely a relief, I went with what I mentioned and a week after my paruresis was gone. I just go'ogled the latest in Beck Reznark’s guide and now I can go without even thinking about it.

When I was a kid during the 80s an 90s we went to hunting Island a lot. The cabins were in the woods. There was a natural buffer of 40 feet plus the dunes an beach. There are roads in the water in that end of the island. The inland bodies of water in the picture were hundreds of yards from the coast line.

Oh, how unfortunate that you can't delve into Camille Claudel's story. Why is it that no art expert seems to have time for the female victims of Rodin?

This woman presenting his artworks is actually a good way to show society has evolved and become more inclusive. On the contrary, I think it's close-minded to want blacks to stick with blacks and whites with whites. It's completely paradoxal with the idea that everyone should respect and even admire others however they are black, white or anything else.

Thank you so much man, keep up the creativity and the good work. God bless!!

I like this Medium of Art which is one of the so-called “Egg Tempera”. I never expect that this kind of art is existing and I was amazed when our instructor introduced this to us. I didn’t even expect that it was possible to make an art paint by mixing egg yolk, dry pigment, sterilized water, and a small drop of vinegar. I hope this art would have spread further because it is really amazing and I was also amazed to discover this art.

  • @danmichaelba-ang8171

Thank you for this informative video as I have learned what a fresco painting is, which is made by putting paint on wet plaster. As the paint dries, it sinks into the plaster. It tends to be durable, yet it must be done quickly without mistakes, as the artist has only 9-12 hours to complete the painting before the plaster completely dries and hardens, so it must be done swiftly and accurately.
