CSX Sand Patch Grade & Cumberland MD 1995 Part 2 (Revised)
zhlédnutí 1,4KPřed 4 lety
1995 Part 2 picks up from the end of part 1 with the helpers from the last train heading down grade to help another train. Note that one train has an SD50 and 4 GP40-2's on the front, (one an ex-RF&P) and two SD50's pushing on the rear. (must have been a heavy train). The last several minutes take us back to Cumberland. This visit in 1995 was our last trip to Sand Patch due to a move from the P...

1995 was our last trip to Sand Patch as we moved from the Philadelphia area to South Carolina later that year. I have posted Sand Patch Videos from 1989,1990,1991,1992 & now 1995. I have been unable to find the tapes for 1993 & 1994. In this video the first four trains were shot at Fairhope crossing. Of note is the second train at approx. 4:04, the second unit is a BQ23-7. Notice that the cab w...
CSX Action Randolph Tunnel Magnolia Cutoff 1991 & 1992

Short video of two CSX trains at Randolph Tunnel on the very remote Magnolia Cutoff. The first train was filmed in 1991 and the second 1992. Of note is the two GP30's on the first train, one a road slug and the other operational, still in B&O Blue. The second train is lead by a GP40-2 still in B&O blue. A rare sight at that time.

We are now on the West slope of Sad Patch Grade in mid-October 1992. This video is short because my video camera (not the battery) crapped out, ending the filming for the trip. First we have a train making a pick-up at Rockwood, PA, (Rockwood Jct.), where the former Western Maryland crossed over the B&O. That roadbed is now part of the Great Allegheny Trail. The WM and B&O paralleled each other...
Safety At The Crossroads
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 5 lety
This film was produced by the Reading Company in 1955 to raise public awareness of safety at railroad crossings. It features a lot of Reading F-unit run-bys and shows a bit of what life was like in the mid-fifties, (eg: a gas station attendant changing out a wiper blade on a car). Classic 50's movie but fun to watch the trains.

I was a member of the NRHS team that restored the Reading Company FP7's 902 & 903. It took us 10 years to take the units from basic hulks to full operating condition and dedication in May 1995. (see my videos on the dedication). In 1992 we moved the units from Strasburg, Pa to Amhearst Industries in Landisville, Pa. After replacing all of the side panels we had Amhearst paint both units. This v...

Back at Sand Patch in October 1992. Part 1 explores the East slope of the grade, beginning with a train that has just left Cumberland and is exiting the narrows. The narrows is a gap in the mountains created by Wills Creek. We move to Fairhope Rd crossing where we see a hi-railer come off of track #2. A helper set stops there to talk with the MOW people. October was a great time to visit there ...

CSX Train originating at Grafton West Virginia descending the East slope of the steep 17-mile grade. Of note is the smoking brake shoes in the front cars as the locomotives are holding this train back. Also the third locomotive is a former SCL U-Boat and the fourth is an EX-D&H (nee: Reading) GP39-2.

Part 2 of our 1991 Sand Patch trip begins at Mance, which is at the apex of the CSX "Horse Shoe Curve". then continues to the East portal of Sand Patch Tunnel. From there we go to Fairhope Rd crossing, and then to CP Brackens. One thing we really liked was to hear the train horns echo off of the mountains. At Brackens the red wall was built after Wills Creek overflowed after a bad storm and was...

It's June 1991 and we are back at Sand Patch. We picked June to visit to maximize the daylight. We begin at Hyndman, Pa which is at the base of the East slope. We then go to the signal at Maxwell back to Hyndman and then to Mance. I break the videos into two parts to keep them under 20 minutes each for easier viewing.

Mentioning that second train, it looks like a unit molten sulfur train?
Love the sound of those 567's! I got very intimate with these GP's while doing the rebuild on them in Livingston, MT at LRC. We had the nose chopped, rewired and recabled, generators and diesels rebuilt and repainted. It was in Jan '92 we did the first one. Fun job with these!
Awesome classic footage! 👍👍
Many thanks!
Nice shots of rg tower
That is beautiful power on 136
love the turntable action

ilove the old cheesie system colors ,yellow orange etc
Thank you for posting this, I'm greatful! I conducted on this trip with Don Colangelo running. The gentleman in the plaid shirt in the one shot just after leaving Pocopson is my father. This may be the only video of him and I on an engine, and what a loco to be on. Thank you again, this brings back great memories of a time when I really enjoyed working for the railroad. Still at it almost 30 years later.
Thanks for the comment. Don't know if you remember but we worked together at Mitchells for several years. My name is Bob Bastian. I was part of the NRHS Lancaster Chapter that restored 902 & 903. I always wondered who the gentleman in the plaid shirt was. Do you still work for the railroad?
The prime mover sounds like a 645E
I’m surprised no dash 8s yet 5:50
5:31 holy balls that’s a lot of cool power on one train:
I'm lovin those Front Runners with the single axles
Its honestly a shame these ended up at Steamtown. I know they still operate, but.. well Steamtown is just leaving most of their locos to rot, for example CNR 47.
Both units have been purchased by the Woodstown Central RR in NJ. They will be used on most passenger tourist trains. It will be great to see them running again. Thanks for your comment.
Next Summer
@@babyhars93 Yeah I figured that out already. I live in the UK so I'm probably not gonna be that up to date.
Is that Rocky's house off to the left or right at 2:35?
No, Rockys house is around a quarter mile away and not in view.
I'm trying to stay out of trouble.Just working at Wilsmere now. I made it to number 1. I didn't think I'd last this long. I have less than a couple years to go and I can get out of here.
What's up Tony

The SMS Rail Lines saved the Reading FP7s!
Then D&H. Later, it was Guilford Rail System…. now, Norfolk Southern.
8097 was the engine I got my first cab ride on. Enough it was 95 and it was in CSX paint
Date was 1990.
All the roundhouse tracks are all gone. No loco will take the dive ever again.
Such an un-classy paint scheme compared to Chessie.
Why is Canadian National 3254 Renumbered to 1271?
She was disguised as Lackawanna 1271 for some time until she was renumbered back to 3254.
I liked the simple blue and grey scheme.
Nice capture
I miss the days of CP in Philly!
Your videos are superb. Thank you for sharing them.
Wild how an RF&P unit got to Philadelphia
Actually RF&P locomotives were a daily occurrence at Eastside yard. They always led the "orange Blossom special" trains R171 & R191 as they had cab signals which were required on their trip from Philly to New Jersey. Several of my videos show RF&P units in action on the CSX..
@@babyhars93 They were a pain though because they lacked dynamic brakes.
B&O and C&O wouldn't disapear until 1987.

Awesome
Hi Mitchell: I posted this from a VHS version I purchased many years ago. I was told it is public domain so it was o.k. to post. I would love to see a color version of this film. Reading is my favorite railroad, and I loved the F units. Thanks for your message.
Actually filmed in color, the surviving copies are faded but can now be color corrected. I will be showing the 16mm version to a few railroad groups beginning this Friday.
Nice video with lots of action!
This is excellent, all of your uploads are top notch stuff!
Thank you so much for this amazing footage. Amazing history with these units. The EMD F7 is my favorite style locomotive of all time.
We had a few customers down there. I think they’re all gone now. Food Fair Pantry Pride was the big one. That’s the Eagles stadium now. It was in giness book of records at one time. The other was Jetro warehouse. That’s the Phillies stadium now. They both got rice , sugar, paper, and beer. That cheap stuff from Mexico. You know the one everyone puts a slice of lime in.
All gone. What there is is handled by Shared Assets. CSX even gave up the street work.

@@bartertown I have been off now almost 5 years. Working on the house. Got 2 new basement additions 12x 16 each. Hopefully will build new layout with 2 yards connected by 2 helixes. Stay out of trouble Tony. I can’t imagine what it is like there now.
The yardmaster talking is George Sheer. He was talking to a crew at the “Piers” or Snyder ave. The engineer is Rick Maguire. That Unit in the pit wasn’t the only one to take the dive. One of those big aircraft carrier GEs went in head first. I got some film of that.
The good old days of railfaning.
Me & my bro used to catch action there in Gray's Ferry. Up on the ped. overpass that's welded shut.... Wouldn't do that these days. You could go to Philly once upon a when & not fear for your life.... 🚬😎
those old diesels are better than the hunks of junk we have on the railroads today
Neat! Love the old footage!
its so weird seeing so many tracks. There was only one for a long time after NS took it over. they just installed a 2nd track not to long ago.
Original SAL GP40 at 2:40. Old SAL lettering showing under the SCL lettering.

I was at Camp O’Bannon when this was filmed..OHCR 400 was assigned the Daily Coshocton Newark Turn and on occasion ran on the weekend. I arrived at Camp on a Sunday afternoon after going out to eat at Stacey’s restaurant for a Sunday breakfast. And seen OHCR 400 departing Newark on State Route 16 heading towards Coshocton

@@babyhars93 I spent many many hours running the 49 loading grain cars at the elevator where it sits,it's out in the open so it's easy to photograph and it's used daily during the week to switch the ethanol plant on the same track as the elevator.
Would have liked to have seen this before the main line to Saint Louis was abandoned. Always heard Grafton was a busy place back then! Nice video.
Don’t remember the 3561. Didn’t get to many Geep 35s.
