I'd agree in the main. Just finished a first listen so it may grow on me more yet. its a good album. Not jaw-droppingly amazing or anything. I admit I didn't care for Rattle That Lock that much and this is much better on first listen. There is certainly more variety in sounds and styles but maybe too many follow the Another Brick In the Wall Part 2 template of verse/chorus/verse/chorus/outro solo. But its a minor gripe, on the whole its a solid effort. PS - you right about the music on Roger's last tour being the same as his previous one... its all pre-recorded backing tracks!

Nice review Matthew. I've been disappointed with Gilmour's work for the last 30 years. It's mainly because these have not been solo records but rather a Gilmour family affair. I don't care for much of his wife's lyrics. She wasn't around during the DSOTM era or any of the Pink Floyd heyday. Now he's pushing his daughter on us and I just have zero interest. I find nepotism extremely annoying.

That' machine looks like new. I'm amazed someone decided to skip it..

The residue under the electrolytics was glue or some other compound used to make the board more vibration resistant. If you look up pictures of DX7 power supply boards, all of them have similar rings of crud under them. The caps may have dried out, but I don't think they leaked. You also probably knew this, but using capacitors with a higher voltage rating won't hurt anything.

I bought one a few weeks ago for £70 and I love it. Only issue I have is that it makes a loud popping sound when I turn it off.

I wonder if the polycarbonate material wears the stylus more than the vinyl because I think it is harder than vinyl

This is maybe a bit of a tenuous tangent but,, 10 mins before your notification I got a notification from Suzanne Ciani (she is an electronic musican), Its an interview with her and John Chowning I had not heard of him but a google seach told me he invented FM Synthesis. Just thought that was a coincidence worth a mention.

People always get scared when they see the magic smoke, but more often than not it's just "rifa madness" as Dave from EEblog calls it, the rifa filter capacitors that crack and then let off their smoke. I've only changed them once in a BBC Model B PSU. I've got an OG DX7 as well, but I've got one of the third party expansion boards in mine.

Very interesting video Matthew.. Surprisingly the DX-7 seems to still hold it's ground in the world of digital sound reproduction.

They’ve got another sale on at the moment. I was in there yesterday looking at the sale vinyl and there was an Avenged Sevenfold album reduced from £59.99 to about £35. I often wonder who buys some of these full-price albums before they get reduced. Do they actually sell any at the full price. Some of the prices are laugh-out-loud high. I remember seeing an Elton John single album for £60 in there last year (at least the Avenged Sevenfold was a double or triple) and thinking WTF who buys that at that price.

The interesting comparison for me would have been the polycarbonate vs. traditional vinyl, rather than the digital version of the recording.

I've always thought that as polycarbonate is more difficult to damage than vinyl it might make for a more durable record. (I hesitate to use the patented name for the most common form of polycarbonate - it's used for headlight lenses on cars)

@Matthew North Music Hi, did you compare it to the normal vinyl pressed version to say it sounds about 80% as good as the vinyl version ? This is something I've always wondered... why not use a more durable and high-performance material than simple vinyl ?

I would like to see a spectrum from white noise. I think looking at the spectrum of music is misleading I think since you always see the harmonic frequencies as well and that may make the spectrum look wider. If you look at white noise and simply do a frequency analysis, you will see a tooth like structure where the harmonics are. Measuring a record involves also additional bits like the needle, the mechanics the A/D transformation while you can basically rip the data from the CD without anything in between. But that is just my humble opinion, I normally look at signals for speech recognition and not music.

I know this video is 2 years old, but this is the first time I've seen it. Friggan awesome showing a Damian Wilson record! I'll be seeing Damian Wilson at ProgPower US this next week (Sept 7, 2024) in Atlanta, GA in the US. I've seen him before with Threshold a few years ago at RoSFest in Gettysburg, PA. Two years later, I wonder what other albums are using this injection molding process. Nearly all the albums I've bought over the past couple of years were made using the traditional PVC pressing.

I scrubbed over this video more than once in utter disbelief that you went through all of the effort of making this video and didn't actually play us a single sound from that record. Is this the highest level of audiophile lunacy? Buying records just to digitize them and pixel peep the waveforms?

Two questions one must consider. Is it more durable than a vinyl record? Is it smoother than a vinyl record meaning less stylus wear?

Having a tech background injection moulding pc compared to pressing a puck of vinyl is asking for trouble. I am not saying it can't work or sound great but from a manufacture pov. You need a lot of energy to heat up pc and shape it into a record injection moulding. With vinyl you just need to get to melting point and the press does the rest. Polycarbonate is just as vinyl a pallet as a raw material (resin).

Working on the USA version of one of these now............ hopefully things will shake out for me.

Frequency domain of the signal based on Fourrier transform is always dependant on levels of individual frequencies. Less loudness = less dominant FFT presence. That’s why in looks like there are no high frequencies on signal from less loud LP. But they are still there. Your presentation is widely used misconception based on very little knowledge of signal theory. In fact,BW of LP is limited more by rpm,than anything else - and that’s just forgotten physics of physical recording.

We had one in Greenock I rememberb it in the 80's from my childhood. I think I bought some sort of wire or cable from it might have been so that I could connect whatever I had to my brothers car stereo so that I could play my music through it.
