Linocut carving and printing: "From The Ashes" by Maarit Hänninen #linocut #printmaking #artprocess
Wow, I can't believe it's already been three years since my last CZcams video! A lot has happened since then, but for the most part, I have been busy creating new prints. You can check them out at maarit.hanninen.
Last year, I moved from my small home studio to my own atelier-a creative getaway situated in the last remaining farmland in Amsterdam. The new space offers room for a bigger press, and in this video, you'll get a glimpse of both the atelier and the press.
Join me as I create my latest linocut print, "From The Ashes." Inspired by the mythical phoenix bird and the transformative times we've all experienced, this print captures the essence of growth and renewal. At 42 x 59.4 cm (16.5 x 23.4 in), it's my largest print to date.
I'll also share some exciting new techniques, including how to transfer an image using a laser printer, sticker backing paper, and Mod Podge or acrylic matte medium. Plus, I'll show you how to fix small carving mistakes using epoxy putty like Milliput.
I hope you enjoy watching the process! If you'd like to get your hands on one of these prints, they're currently available on my website at maarithanninen.com/. Thank you for your support!

Oh wow so you print on the other lino!!! Get it! Gorgeous work,
That's really pretty! You deserve more recognition ❤
Я только один раз делала линогравюру, и мне понравилось, хотелось бы повторить
Underrated!!!
Pretty but what is it? 😅
A flower.
Its a flower
Lol, guys 😂
Linocut is a letterpress printing technique similar to woodcut. The image is cut out on linoleum or other polymer base and printed on sheet paper. (Engraving made on linoleum; print of such an engraving.)
Awesomw work
Super helpul! The only instrucrion of this kinf I found! Thank you! Nice motif btw👍
Beautiful and stunning work, thanks for sharing.
Очень красивая и аккуратная работа! Браво! Процесс как медитация...
i love this do mind me asking why didn’t you make two separate lino cuts (sorry i’m new to this i don’t know the proper name) instead of cutting out of the original.
This way the colors align perfectly and it uses less lino. Plus the red ink wasn't bright enough when I tested it directly on the black paper
That is just beautiful. You know I kinda hate when the algorithm tosses me something completely out of left field like this. Now my brain will not rest until I spend hundreds of dollars and maybe months of my life, only to remember that I will never be as talented as she is.
Never heard about sticker baking paper… what’s that and where can I buy it?
Thank you so much for this tutorial, I was panicking realizing I'd used a wrong letter in a print and was agonizing over having to do it again. This video made new connections in my brain!
Wauw, dankje, ik had een korte cursus gevolgd en daarna gegrepen door het Lino virus..ik liep echter aan tegen het amateur versus iets meer dan dat stapje...dankje je filmpje gaf mij moed om een volgende stap te zetten.
Wonderful. What was the Milliput Putty for? A repair of a mistake? I have used epoxy putty. Very difficult, and doesn't always work. Or was there another reason?
The process, the print and the filming are brilliant. Lovely piece.
I liked it, peace of mind😊😊
May I ask what is the name/brand of this particular Lino block? Is there any online shop that sells and ships internationally?? I live in Singapore, the one they have is the blue and red pvc ones, once carved, inside is black. So often it’s very hard to see the contrast between the cut and the sketch. Also very hard to carve in for fine details.
I love your work. So awesome! 🤩😍
Masterful work 😮❤
Beautiful!!❤❤❤
Gosh that’s beautiful, reductive prints break my heart but goodness there amazing. ❤
Thank you so much! It was definitely hard to cut away those details 😅
Where do you find these amazing images ?
I design them myself
Wow. You have an amazing talent!
I would've loved to see the print it makes tho
I'll be posting that part in the coming days. I'm still editing it 😅
Wonderful 😊
What glue was used?
I used pva glue
beautiful
Sooo satisfying!!
You're such a pro! This was a great video, and I loved the design you made. Did you glue your lino to wooden blocks? If so what is the purpose of this please?
Lovely work and inspiring. :-)
Wonderful artistic work! Great to look at your technique and printing results! Thanks
Gorgeous art piece
Please, where in Scandinavia can I find this backing paper? Been looking all over... Thanks
Do you dampen your paper at all?
I need to understand how you do that transfer! do you have a tutorial anywhere?
Incredible work!
Very cool! What is the paper that you used in the printer?
Where did you buy your carving instruments?? Thanks. A big hug from México!!
Hi, I'm starting in linocut, what kind of gubias do you use? Any trade in special that you recomend?? Thanks from México.
Has anybody done this on a rubber carving block?
That so smart! I want to a lino cut with 4 colors. Didn't think to make a print to make a guide for the other blocks!
whats the black stuff you brush over the drawing?
Beautiful
Beyond stunning
I tried the sticker backer paper and it worked beautifully. Have you ever reused the backing paper?
Thank you - Have always struggled to find a solution for this
Hi! It's a much better video when the music has very little to no lyrics while playing over the video. It sounds as if the song is the star and not the linocut. I find your videos much more enjoyable when the music is in the background. 🙂
Lovely work , what is the material you are carving out please ? Amazing work, and lots of energy in it 👍👍, carry on
Holy smokes. This is absolutely stunning 😍
