A typical reaction to GD & T in Canadian industries in the province of Ontario: 1. Too much time is consumed to draft. They love to work by the nominal dimension and a general tolerance of +/-0.005 (0.127mm) .....and the features (holes and mating parts have no connection to the gen. tolerance during planning the clearances. And if one wants the part to be "super" accurate then one must increase the nominal dimension after the decimal to 4 or 5 places!! But the gen. tol. is again +/-0.005!! 2. When the tolerance units exceed 4 to 5 places after the decimal in GD & T flag...everyone flips. Engineers, machinist and inspection. They cannot think beyond 0.005" 3. They love to think and talk in fractions and expect everyone to understand. Well, we all understand fractions but very difficult to visualize the distance when your're from the metric world. 4. GD & T will bring up the cost of manufacturing...as per many. The GD & T flags are intimidating per many and give them a vertigo. 5. The machinist said: The machine will give the accuracy it can. We cannot ask for more accuracy... It is very frustrating to work with unskilled and arrogant engineering personnel.

Yes, I like this instructor. He sounds like one of my old professors back in my college classes... But I still don't get why he said we may not need |C| datum feature for those 4x holes? Let's assume that the ID with keyway slot and OD and both side surface at machined 1st then now how to setup the part to make those 4 holes? How much off from the hole@12:00 to |C|? But I pet the part will be turned, OD, ID and thickness first then put on Mill to make those 4 holes. Then now the keyway slot will be made. The same question, How much off from the hole@12:00 to |C|? To me, if you put the |C| there at TP of 4 holes, all (machinist, inspector) will know that the holes have to be controlled by |C|. Just my thought!

GlennHa: You're absolutely right. The leaders of this crap, like this guy, just can't leave well enough alone. That might eliminate their jobs. The wise engineer knows to what level manufacturing can understand this stuff and applies it accordingly. I keep hearing "Dimension purely for part function." I disagree. Dimension for manufacturing. They're the ones that will be producing your part. "I was right!" is little consolation when the part is scrap because the makers didn't know what you were asking for.

GD&T was always poorly understood, now it's even worse with the 2009 release. For instance, I've seen people apply concentricity to a chamfer. The key is to make good (conforming & acceptable), interchangeable parts without scrapping a good part nor accepting a nonconforming part. Also, no rework to bring a part into acceptable condition, but make them good from the get-go. Rework kills profitability.
