Scoring Films With the Composer of Corvine, Crashing Eid, The Curve & Flight 404 | Suad Bushnaq
It's not often that we welcome a film score composer on QuarterTones. So we had a lot to chat about with award-winning composer Suad Bushnaq. We discuss the realities of writing music for cinema, her favorite Arab film scores of all time, and why the best movie soundtracks are those that you don't remember. We quiz Suad on how she chooses a key for her music, what it was like to study at Damascus' Higher Institute of Music after auditioning in front of no-other than the late Solhi al-Wadi, and overcoming one's ego as a creative.

Thank you for presenting Palestinian music in exile. It acted as a momentary relief from the drums of war. I am grateful to discover my origins in old age. I lived in private schools and studied English and French Literature. It was written on my Egyptian I.D. that I was born in Haifa. I had no clue about Haifa and considered myself Egyptian, as the family had moved to Cairo in 1948. I was four. Then came Al Aqsa storm with it's mixed tragedy and heroism . The name of Haifa was repeatedly mentioned in the News. I used to hear Fayrouz's song about Jerusalem but never got emotional as I do now. I had just thought it was a great performance .

In an op-ed in the Guardian on November 1, 2017, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas stated..."Palestinians" were the Jews who lived, along with Muslims and Christians on land called Palestine, which was under British administration from 1917 to 1948. All people born there during the time of the British Mandate had "Palestine" stamped on their passports. But the Arabs were offended when they were called Palestinians. They complained: "We are not Palestinians, we are Arabs. The Palestinians are the Jews".

unfortunately alot of people in the industry dont get this themselves, future isn't doing our region a favor or giving grace when he features on an arabic song with an arabic artist, our region is the fastest growing region in the world for the past 2 years and artists with little to no support are pulling Future's and many more A-listers numbers, they're actually promoting themselves to keep them self relevant in the region to gain more audience and listeners, its getting to the point of oh "we need the region" but we actually dont need them, collaborations are always welcome but to have it marketed to diaspora and orientalists is the mistake, show the culture and the art we have not the stereotypes. thank you for mentioning this

Ah, the first Arab feminist! Now there’s a title that should come with a cape, right? I mean, she’s basically the Wonder Woman of early 20th-century Egypt! Can we just take a second to acknowledge that while many of us are struggling to manage the remote control, she was managing to reclaim her rights? Talk about multitasking! So, let’s talk about Huda Sha'arawi! Yes, Huda! Not just another name in history; she was literally a trailblazer! Imagine the scene-it's the early 1900s in Egypt, and there she is, breaking down walls and stereotypes. I mean, there’s no Tinder for historical figures, but if there was, she’d have a profile pic standing in front of a packed crowd, holding a sign that says, “Swipe right if you believe women should get educated and participate in public life!” And she wasn’t just about “Hey, we should have a seat at the table.” She was like, “Where’s the whole table, and can we get a bigger one while we’re at it?” She founded the Egyptian Feminist Union in 1923. While most of us are still trying to figure out how to organize our sock drawers, she’s organizing a full-fledged movement! Like, "Oh, you're going to the grocery store? I’ll just change the course of our society, no biggie!" But Huda's work didn’t stop there. No, she was all about action! She actively campaigned against female circumcision, which, can you imagine how tough that conversation was? “Excuse me, sir, can we not practice that anymore?” It’s like trying to cancel your gym membership-no one wants to hear you say it! And the best part? She decided one day, “Alright, I’m done with these boring conventions.” So what does she do? She removes her veil in public! That's literally the historical equivalence of throwing down the mic! Boom! "Anyone got a problem with that?" She knew she was making a statement. It's like when I finally showed people my cooking attempts on social media after years of burnt toast-I was like, "Welcome to my culinary revolution, folks!" Picture this: the early 1900s, men are probably saying, “But women belong in the home!” and Huda’s probably rolling her eyes, “Actually, I belong in civil rights meetings, thank you!” So, no doubt about it, she paved the way for countless women fighting for their rights today. And when we talk about the term “Arab feminism,” this woman set the stage! She was like the Beyoncé of her time-she just said, “I don't think you’re ready for this jelly,” and then dropped the mic. So, remember Huda Sha'arawi, the original Arab feminist! When you think of firsts, just know she’s out there in history, rocking her early feminist game while we’re still trying to figure out if “yoga pants” count as acceptable work attire!

The Arabi song is catered towards western audience therefore it’s utilizing all the western stereotypes about arabs. Another example would be the Lebanese dancing band in AGT couple years ago. The worst effect of orientalism according to Said is that of orientals acclaiming the orientalist stereotype themselves.in other words arabs seeing themselves through western eyes.

Thank you for this podcast. Decolonization is still and must be a priority in our agenda. As said by Idriss « decolonizing our thinking » is something we should be aware of. In the sixties and seventies, the decolonization was a recurring slogan. What we are seeing today is a counter revolution; the youngest are dreaming of the West. After Isreal war on Gaza and the support from the West, a change in the mindset must happen. Once again, we need to decolonize our mind.
