Would one of these machines running either pfsense or opnsense be able to work with an existing mesh network? I have a netgear mesh system but would like to implement something like this behind it for better security.

Remember folks the ultimate homelab server for you is the first one that gets you into the hobby! You can always upgrade use what you have and upgrades over time are part of the hobby you don't need to jump to the highest end!

On Synology the same ssd cache pair can be used for both read (l2arc) and write (slog), and you can even add metadata to it. Can this be done with truenas?

I love docker and loki is awesome. However, that loki plugin for docker caused me way too much grief. It would at random cause containers to not start or stop. Removing it was nearly impossible. I have resorted to completely removing docker from the machine and starting over.

At @22.50 you actually select them all to "NOT" to update that's why it was fast :P

Just a note - adding pbs as a storage device to Datacentre > storage > add completely BREAKS if you need to expose the admin interface to the www via CF tunnels and have MFA setup.

Just to remember that the Helper Scripts are NOT supported by Proxmox.

iPXE is not desirable on slow connections, so it's much better off with USB flash drives.

I actaully started my Homelab with Unraid since it's great to use with an old PC. It just expanded from there, and I'm not done yet either. So I kind of did the opposite of what you did. I started out "light" and went on to Proxmox and all that stuff that comes with it. But Unraid is good for a "all in one" server, and just a general media server. It does things a bit differently, so there's some getting used to, but it works once you get the hang of it.

Looks helpful, for large scale though it'd be nice if there were ansible playbooks of these scripts with the prompts removed, that way they can be fire and forget when spinning up new proxmox servers and adding them into the cluster

I think this is dangerous. The issue arrives from the apparently convenient feature that the software is "always up to date". Up to date could include that it's been handled to include malware. That's why wise installers download the hash for the .iso file from a trusted site, verified with a cryptographic signature, and then check offline that it verifies OK before using it. I'm sceptical whether this process, where the file is downloaded and booted without operator intervention, actually does all of that. Even if it does do it, by havening the checkpoint process defined in code, that too becomes hackable. This is just another example of something being offered to save a few minutes work (and only occasionally in this case) that is setting us up for a messy comeback someone in the future.

As a tip, I use `tmux` on the shell just in case I click away from the browser or tab to not loose the progress of the shell. Just executing `tmux a` will bring back the latest active shell used via `tmux`.

My homelab is sick. I plug my pc into my router and have FULL ACCESS to pretty much anything that exists. I can play games, I can store files, I can even share things with friends or family. It's insane.
