I created this channel just to share what I have created after all the many hours of watching different videos on Vanlife and Cargo conversions. I plan to add anything new that I come up with and changes to our current trailer and any others in the future.

DIY Lift Bed V2 for Cargo Trailer
zhlédnutí 27KPřed 2 lety
Hello all, this is a new video on my updated bed. This is v2 of my elevator bed in my Cargo trailer. If you are interested to see another solution take a look at my previous version with a boat winch. I used mainly Pine boards and some Aluminum to build the bed. The crank was sourced from Wayfair www.wayfair.ca/outdoor/pdp/aleko-retractable-awning-gearbox-hardware-alek3623.html The center brace...

This is my 7 x 14 ft aluminum cargo conversion. I spend about 2 months building this and have been adding and making small changes since. If you have any questions or comments please share. I have taken a complete inventory of what my costs were during this build and have a list of products that I can share if anyone is interested. For those people interested in Cost. Where’s the toilet? Shower?
There is no shower in it. I didn't want to lose valuable space and most campgrounds have public ones. I do have a casset toilet that is in the box under the fridge. This gets pulled out at night and put by the front door where the folding table pops up. Fits perfect and is used for my wife. The curtain is pulled while on the toilet.
What size is the removable pin that replaced the Rivet in the cambar handle?
Not sure what you are refering too. I never replaced any Rivets in my build.

Van Build Out - Dodge Grand Caravan
Interesting, did you post somewhere who made the trailer. I like the door in the nose of the trailer. I wanna copy that.
I got the trailer made by the Canadian Trailer Company in Goderich, Ontario, Canada
Awesome looking hunting trailer,,, I like how you have given safety a front row seat in ur build, Fire extinguisher, CO2 alarm,, escape window,, sturdy framework,, this is exactly what I'm looking for as a hunting trailer,, great work
Having a turnbuckle on each cord is a perfect way to adjust for even length/tension so it lifts evenly.
What a great father for doing this conversion for your daughter!!😊
Finally-after viewing hundreds of Dodge Caravan builds-yours is the one I’ve been looking for! 😊a very smart build!-It is an affordable dyi of the Roadloft kit! Would you mind sharing the dimensions of the boxes you built for each”row”? How did you level the floor? It looks like two 24” trifold mattresses were used for beds? What fridge did you get to fit so perfectly in the last space? Any other words of advice? Thank you so much!
Thanks, Karen. A lot of the build was built around some things we already had purchased. With regards to the dimensions unfortunately I have sold the Caravan so can help with that. Basically I took the fridge BougeRV 30 Quart and put it in the back. From there I measured the distance between what space I wanted to have for that and split that in half so I could make equal boxes. The two boxes in the front needed to leave enough space to put the porta-potty between. I looked around for plastic containers to fit inside and built around those afterwards. The trifolds had to be cut a little as they were a little wide. Just cut the foam don't worry about the fabric as you don't have to cut much. Hope that helps. enjoy
Thanks!
looks good
So after a few years time how is that door on the front vee area ?
Still working great. Don't regret it at all. Just have to figure out some little awning so when it is raining you don't get wet coming out.
Great job! I think you have improved on my design- I still like the E-track I’ve used to lock it in place but I also use the track for other things. Your design is cleaner. Check out my lift bed at czcams.com/video/LDeYOyNvUiY/video.html Here is my channel with more on the build: youtube.com/@coachgym
Does an awning crank have a lock? like can you crank part way down and lock in place?
Hi there Eric, The Awning crank will stay at any level. Would I put additional weight on it no. I don't have any pins that hold it at the top or anywhere else. One thing I don't ever to is run the trailer with it at the top position. If I wanted it at the top while driving I would just put pins in to take the weight off of it. Other than that I have never had any issues with it slipping while in any possition.
Would you mind listing the parts you used?
Good day. I have the main parts that were needed in the description. The main frame was just pine, and the brackets were made of aluminum L angle cut to length with a saw. The main rode was aluminum to keep down the weight.
@@liveandbreatheeasy Thank you.
This is the best idea yet I've seen on CZcams for a quick, easy and versatile build! Good on ya Dad 👍🏼😍
Thanks for the kind words. It was a lot of fun building it.
Does it raise evenly and when sitting in the highest position?
Yes, this one works perfectly. All you have to do is ensure that the strings are even when it is down. Because the strings wind along the bar without overlapping it works perfectly.
@@liveandbreatheeasy I just purchased a racor crank and modified my 1 inch aluminum stock rod. My self adjusting roller bearing should be here tomorrow. czcams.com/video/strdOhaCFWo/video.html
Did you drill the hole through the rod straight and the ropes just automatically wind out in each direction? Or did you drill the hole at an angle to start them in the right direction?
What a great Dad! Sweet build!
Thanks
Really creative. Nice ideas.
I was about to pull trigger and buy 2 electric actuator to build my own bedlift until I saw your build, Both of your bedlifts are the simplest setup from the hundreds of bedlifts videos online I have watched. Whats not to like, both your your bedlift designs require little material, investing less than $100, and simple hand tools most DIY'ers have on hand. Thanks for sharing
Glad I could save you some money. V2 is definately smoother and simplier.
Best lift bed that I have seen on youtube. Works and is simple enough not to fail. Top marks for thinking with this one.
Thanks for the comment
100% doing this and adding a pin system at the top so i can drive with the bed elevated. my only concern is stripping out the gear box from a rather heavy bed. i wonder what they are really capable of...
I am not sure however they are used to roll out heavy awnings with an outward stress on them. Keep the weight down as much as possible like it did.
Brilliant!
Very nice job. You and family are really going to enjoy. Pat yourself on your back, well done. Safe Travels and God Bless
Thanks Glenda, We have totatlly enjoyed the build since we did it.
The design is awesome, one more question please: how can it stay on top without falling off, is it a function of the crank or is there another mechanism?
Thanks for the comment. It is just the function of the crank. As it is an Awning crank it just holds there. I never drive with the bed in the air though as the bed isn't secure in tracks and I don't have pins to prevent extra stress on the crank.
I have high hopes of converting a cargo trailer into a mini camper / office lol. This build is VERY well thought out. I love the nose door placement and the privacy screen is also an excellent idea. Thank you for this!
Good luck with your conversion. It was a lot of fun and hope to do some other types of conversions in the future
What brand retracting ladder did you get ad has it been a good buy?
I have a Huhu from Amazon. It has worked great for me.
Where did you get a solid aluminum tube and how did you cut it precisely enough to fit into that square slot?
Hi there, I purchased the solid round at www.metalsupermarkets.com/. This is a Canadian supplier. I tried first with a hacksaw but ended up using a hand grinder and sand paper. Aluminum is really easy to work with.
Love the front door. Really opened up more room
Thanks. Yes one of the best thing I did when purchasing it. I have only seen this once before.bthe only thing I need to figure out is when it rains at camp.
We need a part 2 for that bed build and set up of the pulleys! Love it and want to do the same!
Hey there, I have two videos about the bed. The Pully system has been replaced now. I found it was a good start but just not what I really wanted. Here is the video of that one czcams.com/video/bktiLsHAknc/video.html and here is the location of my new bed czcams.com/video/BzIKehEFsVk/video.html. Much simpler and can be raised with a drill or manually. The key for me on both of these was to not need to have a motor to move the bed thus not requiring more battery.
Where did you get the casters from?
Not quite sure what you are referring to but if you are talking about the rope guides cut into the wood frame I made them. I used a piece of aluminum C channel and bought patio screens door wheels and put that together to allow me to not have the rope bind.
You just made me a liker of a V nose for the most part I hated them but putting the door there made lots of room in the rest of the trailer. And smart, also pantry near the kitchen part. The bed would be an issue because it would be climbing over my wife to get up to go to the bathroom or if I get a leg cramp. I guess I could go out the back door. I would have to make a larger door in the back and maybe move the bed toward the kitchen part of the trailer. I very seriously thought about building a cargo winter house using an 18' plus tongue trailer we would only eat sleep and watch a movie or tv show Inside, mainly visiting relatives while we were in Florida. I want my property in the mountains to be our home. 73
Thanks for the comments. Yes the V nose this way uses the space much better. The was put at the end so that if it wasn't up we still could sit and eat. I agree that climbing over your spouse is a pain. With something that elevates like this, I am not sure how else you can get around this unless you chewed up more space and had your head and legs go length-wise in the trailer.
@@liveandbreatheeasy I would put two twin beds and have maybe a foot between to get in and out. I slept in a motor home that had beds on the sides but the beds were very narrow not a comfortable sleep. I guess my idea have a back door to go out. With tear drop trailers you have two doors one on each side that's another project I don't want to get into. My ideal would be a front bed and a rear bed and the door out the side. My wife cannot stand my snoring and hers can keep me awake if I'm not really tired. A seven foot wide trailer is really not wide enough but easier to haul. 73
What does it weigh
Cant tell you exactly as I have never weighed it. I tried to keep the weight down when building it. Been meaning to check.
I was also wondering this!
You have thought of everything! Really nice build.
Thank you. We are totally enjoying it. Hope to do a few mods this year on the outside
Just found this. Great ideas that I plan to copy. Can you tell me what the inside of the ceiling is. It appears shiny with no mounting screws.
This was done at the factory for me but it is basically plastic sheets that have been attached with glue and two-sided tape for the overhang.
Glad the bed is far enough away from the refrigerator and the inverter., because they put out magnetic fields that are harmful to the body. Nice bed lift. The rear door idea makes a great second exit Nice place for the front door, too.
Great job I love the biuld
Bathroom???
Hi there, At about 8:00min in I talked about the toilet. We have a porta poti that we take out and put at the front door and pull the curtain at night and sometime during the day if the ladies want to use it. We didn't want to take up space that wasn't going to be used all the time in the trailer. Also, most camping areas that we go to have showers and bathrooms if needed.
@@liveandbreatheeasygood thinking . If it was me there would be no porta-potty. Use the campgrounds facilities. Same with the shower. When we tent camp we both get up together in the middle of the night to go pee. If my wife wakes up first when she wakens me we both usually will have to go. Most camp spots have a place near the bath house and that's where we camp. There was a time in Iowa we were the only ones there. The camp ground has a pipe where you put your rent money with the number of your camp spot. The nice state park was at Wayne Fitzgerald in IL. The officer picked up the money and gave us the sticker. Both places we camped at was cheap. 8.00 at the county state Park and 12.00 at Wayne Fitzgerald camp ground they also had an ice cream place that sold hamburgers and fries we didn't need to cook anything after a long days trip I wasn't in the mood to pull out the stove and cook. Wish Florida had places like that. We did camp in Florida another time but had to kill ticks a few got inside the tent but I killed them with bug spray. We were warned so we were ready. 73
@@ronb6182 This is true about the washrooms at the campground. We have only camped in Canada and everywhere you go you have toilets and showers. We just put it in just in case. My wife likes to use it at night and it also gives us an option if we are on a long haul and can't find somewhere for her to go. We never use it for going number 2 (poop).
@@liveandbreatheeasy good thinking you don't.want to have to deal with it. That's why we have sewers and septic tanks. 73
Thank you for your video. As stated by EricCGran....exactly what I've lookin for; sleek, functional, looks good, cost effective.
Brilliant
In your costs, what do you mean exactly by construction? You listed the costs of the interior, exterior and electrical so I'm not sure what that is. Did you pay people to help build it?
All the costs in the description are materials. I built everything but the actual trailer.
@@liveandbreatheeasy can you give an example of an interior cost and construction cost?
@@noahmcdaniel4920 if you read the description of the video I have the costs for the different pieces of the build.
@Live and Breathe Easy the description just says the total costs for the different categories. I'm just trying to understand what you meant by construction given that you already broke costs down by interior, exterior and electrical.
@@noahmcdaniel4920 Sorry I am not following completely. There were no other costs other than my time building it which is $0
I just got a van from.my brother so love the easy build .
Please share sources and costs of items
Very Clever! Great build!
Thank you
What size and type rope did you use ?
HI there, I used Nylon Braided Rope, 3/16. We will see how it works. Not worried about it breaking. I wanted to have white which seems to be harder to find in different types.
@@liveandbreatheeasy thank you. Can you guestimate how heavy the entire platform is? Wondering how much 3/16 rope can handle for my situation
@@caschycom I would say maybe 100 with the queen mattress.
Check at a marine supply store. 4:22
The way people say "alumunoum" drives me crazy! 😂
That’s the Canadian way 😂 if you’re British then you’ll pronounce it Al-u- min- rum with the accent on “min” and that crazy !! 😂😂
Nice build
How did you attach your screen to the walls of your trailer?
Hi there Carl. I used what came with it. Velcro and I used a few screws to make sure it had a little more support.
Nice job!
i have a comment here it is all those people who lose houses to floods fires hurricanes they all need something like this quick and easy and comfortable until every things is repaired and that can be months or not at all just like homeless people well thats all i can think of to comment on
Very cool
Thanks.
