❤❤❤❤❤
legendary!
JJ and Freddie are other worldly on this one.
Грандиозно!!!!!!
Que du beau monde..et le trombone en majesté
Brilliant!!!
Two fantastic musicians.
Rob was the master of the valve trombone and an amazing arranger.
This is one of the most thrilling and melodious charts for a big band ever!! Saying that remembering the great Thad and Mel, Carnegie Hall Band’s Shiny Stockings, and all of Basie of course.
I wonder how many times I have listened to and shared this track. Love the rocking piano to start things off then the sweet guitar improv followed by the incomparable virtuosity of the two stars. Love it.
That I-IV cadence at 0:22 puts a lump in my throat every time I hear it. Soooo beautiful
Same. A Rainy Day in New York brought me here.❤
They don't make 'em like this anymore... sadly.
Muito bom!!
I hope Bill was a follower of Jesus Christ.
Does anyone know Bill Watrous' favorite mouth piece?
stellar
It's Frank's maturity. He definitely got Better with Age.
Thank you!
Thom Gambino: I had the honor of performing with Bill Watrous’s Manhattan Wildlife Refuge big band from 1973-’74. I left the band to start my road gig with the Joffrey Ballet. Bill’s first album (Tiger of San Pedro) was recorded shortly afterward. Bill died a few years ago. He was a great person & musician.
One of my favorite songs ❤
tuckin awesome
Bill made it sing like no one else
I miss Bill.
An example of how not to play trombone. 😂
This is awesome. Two bone men at the top of their game. You could also hear the unmistakable lead playing of Tommy Pederson with that wide, fast slide vibrato.
Neil Peart liked singing along to this as he road his motorcycle from gig to gig. RIP Neil! 😀
Good Lord! Doesn't Frank ever get tired?? That awesome display was so physically demanding that my face is exhausted just listening to it. 😮
ONE OF THE GREATEST PIECES EVER TO COME OUT OF THE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC RADIO ERA. TRULY A CLASSIC!
Despite this having been recorded well past his prime as a player, and with the cheesy synth strings added, I'm not sure Bill or anyone else has ever taken a more beautifully melodic cut at this tune. And the same goes for the other two ballads on this album.
Reminds me a bit of the tune "Thelonious",written by Monk himself.
Wii theme but serious
I just love his sound - superb.
If only JJ had tempted Wayne into a whole album together. Nonetheless a great album that also delivers Johnson’s take on Blue Train. Beautiful recording. Imagine if Shorter had played on Blue Train! Sounds like a 60s Blue Note session. What higher praise?
Thanks
Stellar... it runs chills up my spine!
DRANK A YACK SMOKE A SACK
His phrasing was top notch!
Urbie Green and Bobby Hackett both had pitch perfect sound and played with such emotion...you couldn't help but feel it.
I've often heard his tuba skills are even more amazing. Almost hard to fathom. First met John in the mid-80s while we were both working at WDW, and I was still a teenager. Great guy. Ask him about his Conn-Bach hybrid, if you ever get the chance. He had chosen a very appropriate hybrid name. 😎
What a treat to hear this ; as a trombonist for over 50 years and still playing I can attest to such brilliant and beautiful playing. Amazing clean high register at the end. Love it.!!
Anyone know what horn Randy is playing and or preferred ?
Just incredible. A very great trombonist for sure.
I remember years ago in NYC, I was coming home from a first date with some guy I really liked, and had a 'thing' for. He just HAPPENED to say, "Yeah, I can take or leave Sinatra.." I got real quiet, composed myself, went to my door, and opened it. "Sorry you had to go so soon.." And closed it in his face, leaving him standing in the hall....no regrets whatever.
Showed my father your comment and he said you don't get women like that anymore hahahaha
Tension in the City is all over this cool piece of music . Always remember the smart dressed Mafia soldier striding out and Shaft in no way phased by where he was being led .
I've honestly never much understood the appeal of Maynard's trumpet playing, but he had so many other great players in his band over the years. It's often worth listening to his recordings just to hear everyone else.
Omg, never understood Maynard’s appeal????? He was the rock, the driving force, the ultimate performer. I feel sorry for you !
@danielweber1952 I just don't care for squeal trumpet in general, or his sound in particular. Nothing about his playing is appealing to me. He was obviously a good bandleader and showman, and his band always had lots of great players in it, so l can appreciate those things about him.
@@davidtatro7457squeal? You may have him mixed up with someone else. That’s pretty damn musical in the upper register and definitely not a squeal. It too bad you never for to hear him live. Amazing performer.
Thanks for posting this. I have the vinyl album. I like several versions of "Sidewinder," but this has got to be my favorite. I agree, sounds like 'bone solo order is Kai, Bill, then Carl. I guess Urbie didn't play one on this track (his "21 Trombones" albums from late '60's are still masterpieces). I had the pleasure of seeing Bill in concert; and also Carl (in fact, I and three other Seattle-area 'bone players had the honor and thrill of playing a 4-trombone arrangement of "Straight, No Chaser" with Carl in about 1989 or 1990 at the Seattle Opera House when Carl was the guest performer at Kent-Meridian's Collegiate Jazz Festival.
Why not? It's Bill watrous
