RV Repairs and Upgrades on a Budget!
We are modernizing our 1986 Vintage RV into the 21st century. This week we ditch the old, outdated radio and bring in an Alpine ILX W650 touch screen head unit. This new upgrade is also capable of adding up to 2 cameras! This was a huge safety and luxury upgrade for our old Toyota Motorhome.

Hello, nice build. What kind of adhesive have you used? Thank you.
Hi! Thank you, we used 3M Fastbond Contact Adheisve
@@JoeandEmmaLee Great! Thank you for such a quick response!
No problem! :)
I started at the beginning and I'm all caught up now. I'll somehow have to make the adjustment to no longer watching the distant past. Anyway, you two are terribly charming and that stuff you're using is properly called heat shrink tubing. (We certainly don't want to be improper.) Shrink wrap was the thin clear plastic found on new LP records in North America to protect the jacket. Our European brothers and sisters didn't use it. Yeah, I'm that old. Don't tell anybody. 😉
Aww thank you for supporting and going on this wild journey with us. Heat shrink! Duh! Haha that’s too funny! See you on the next one ♥️
Wait till you finish the build, the drive is going to be completely different. It will even be hard to make it up small inclines with the 4 cyl. To adjust for that, ONLY essentials and light weight build out. Vinyl peel n stick floor vs heavier faux wood planks. PVC cabinets instead of wood, just do anything to cut weight down and only essentials and she will handle better cross country.
Oh yeah, we know exactly what you mean. When we first bought it this sucker weighed much more. We have definitely been keeping weight in mind. Thanks for looking out!
6:28 91X, baby!
😂 heck yeah
I just found your channel and watched your video. What is your channel all about? What are your goals and plans for the RV when it's done?
Thanks for dropping by. Our plan is to some off grid traveling and cooking recipes in the RV. As well as some exploring.
If you like pickles, try this recipe. Bread and Butter Pickles 1 gal. sliced Cucumbers/vegetables, 5 C. sugar, 3 C. Apple Cider vinegar (not flavored or white), 2 Tbs pickling spice, 1/4 C. coarse salt, 3 galic cloves (crushed), 1 large onion (sliced), 2 large green peppers (sliced), crushed ice to cover. Place all sliced vegetables, salt, garlic, and ice in large stainless steel colander, stir to mix salt and ice through the vegetables. Let sit for 3 hours in the sink to chill. BRINE: In a large stainless kettle, mix the sugar and vinegar with pickling spices, heat until sugar is dissolved. If any ice remains in pickles, try to remove as much as possible as you transfer them to the brine. Bring mixture to a boil. Stir to make sure all pickles are submerged. Have sterilized jars ready when pickles are hot. Fill jars, top off with brine, seal jars with sterilized lids/rings, using a waterbath canner, process hot jars for 10-15 minutes, depending on your elevation. Remove jars from water, place in a draft free place to seal.
We love pickles actually! Definitely going to try this with some of our cucumbers growing!! Thanks!
@JoeandEmmaLee they keep a long time. Up to 50% of the sugar can be replaced with granulated sucralose that measures like sugar. My mother tried a batch once with all sucralose but they went bad. So she did some small batches to see how much sugar could be replaced and still have the pickles preserved.
@greggv8 that’s great! Thank you!
Office Space is my favorite movie. So your name is Michael Bolton. I can't wait for the next video
hahaha yes. Thanks for the support!!
@@JoeandEmmaLee you welcome
Congratulations on another step toward completing the RV. You both have great patience dealing with all the wiring and connections for the entertainment system and the back up camera.
Thank you Uncle Brian! That was way more tedious than we thought it would be. So glad it's done haha
We recently acquired an 87 Toyota Minnie Winnie and have been loving watching you transform your RV. Can’t wait to see more from you both. I love your energy and enthusiasm. Keep it up.
How amazing! Thank you for stopping by we appreciate the kind words!
In hindsight, would a wireless camera have been worth the extra cost? Then you don't need a signal wire but will still need power. But that can be found more local to the mounting location. Running camera from park light power is easiest, but park lights need to be on for camera work. This is a future upgrade in mine that is coming. The swivel wheel trailer is easiest in my case. Wire routing is a problem when the interior is finished.
Possibly yes lol. In the future we could always upgrade to wireless but we wanted an all in one radio/ camera system. Also, at least now we have the power and video wires ran from front to back.
@@JoeandEmmaLee You're already hardwired. No need for upgrade to wireless if that even is an upgrade at all accept for ease of instillation. You are golden. It's a very nice system. You are doing this in the right order.
Appreciate the reassurance 😄

I bought my 1981 Toyota Huntsman for $2,500. And after that I rebuilt absolutely everything in this motorhome, and in the end I had to completely change the rear axle. Several times I almost broke down mentally, realizing how much time and money I wasted! And to this day I cannot say that I have solved all the problems with this motorhome. But how many skills did I gain as a mechanic, electrician, and builder.... Only those who have taken on something like this at least once in their life can understand you guys.
Oh wow! Hoping your rig is better than ever. What you say is exactly the truth. There are so many times we wanted to quit and just were overwhelmed. But we have wayy more skills learned now. Hearing that you’ve done this is inspiring! Thanks for sharing!
The Boeing reference was priceless! hahahahah
Hahaha glad you enjoyed that too
Hey, hi from Brazil! I found your videos through Kels and Jay's channel. You guys are amazing. What's that blue contact glue? I mean, what's the product? (i never saw around here). After taking a break from watching Kels and Jay from the point where they got you guys started on the complete teardown to watch your videos from that point, I binged out on your videos getting all caught up in one day. Basically your work became a "one day build" LOL. I was very happy to see that you guys stepped up and have taken confident control of this build, now on your own. I only "met" you today, but I'm going to bed soon quite proud of you, actually. I'm going to subscribe so I can keep up with your saga, I'm sure it will be very gratifying. Much success to you!

My wife is from Italy and also has made her share of focaccia. FYI it isn't pronounced FOE-KA-SHA, but Fo-ka-cha - like Cha cha cha. So next time you make it practice dancing the Cha-Cha with Joe, Also generously poke the dough with your fingers creating a bunch of receptacles to hasten the baking and filling with extra virgin olive oil. I just recently discovered KelsAndJay CZcams channel and was in the middle of binge watching their videos when they brought you all into their narrative. I've gotten up to the point where they part ways with you for the 2nd time, but I just HAVE to see how you faired on your own, so I'm going to now binge watch you guys and put them on hold for a bit. I'm guessing you might be finished by now, but I'm going to let this Oldest - Newest playlist I created surprise me! Thanks for uploading your experience.

Back up camera ??
Glad you asked. We just received our back up camera in the mail this weekend
Did you calculate the max weight on the overhang? Wonder how strong it is...
From what we’ve tested, 4 humans were in the cabover hang with out it budging.
Why not use filon for the roof as well?
Cost is one reason, but on a horizontal surface it’s prone to cracks/ damage and leaking.
Awesome job. Gonna be interesting to see what you guys have in store for the setup in the coach area. Bet you two are big into interior design, huh? Hehe.
We’re sooo looking forward to getting that part. I mean if we’re not now, we will be by the time we’re done 😛
Nice, I've been rebuilding a 2005 Coachmen Freelander. 3 out of 4 walls so not as severe as yours. We started about the same time and I've been following. You're farther along then me though so I guess I better get outside lol. I used the same tail lights from Amazon and also used spray foam in the weird overcab area. Great minds think alike!
How awesome! That sounds like it will be so fun once it’s done. Thanks for following along :) Amazing and agreed great minds think alike! Keep at it!!
How thick are the studs you used when you rebuilt the camper body? I'm rebuilding a truck camper with 1 in thick wall studs, but store bought wood isn't 1 in thick. I may have to custom cut them with a table saw.
Your RV is turning out great!
We know exactly what you're dealing with. Ours were also 1" true thickness and we had to find that at an actual lumber yard and not Home Depot or Lowes or any chain hardware store.
@@joniportwood1974 Thank you! ☺
@@JoeandEmmaLee Thanks. Also, the plywood on the outside that you glued the filon to, was it 1/8" or 1/4" thick?
We used 1/8” but mainly for saving weight. Otherwise we would’ve used 1/4”
IT'S ALIVE! (or at least waking up) Catching up and pleasantly surprised to see you on the actual road, WoW! Love the attention to detail with the placement of the lights and getting them all level equally spaced. Using the tape to write on and all that, bravo! It will be interesting to see how you tuck in all of those wires as you put the walls up! Only question I had is when you installed the Max Fan I could see there was loose plastic on the top. What was that? Great to see your excitement and the joy of seeing the light at the end of the very, very... long tunnel!
waking up.. we love that haha! This was yet another huge milestone and so thankful we can take it around town again. Are you referring to the protective plastic wrap on top of it?
@@JoeandEmmaLee I am not sure. I just saw something loose on the top when Joe was putting the vent on.
@BrianAz oh hmm we will investigate
Been a while since I checked in and was so happy to see this video. I know exactly how you guys felt during this test drive. Now for the interior build out! Keep up the great work. PS: IF you are gonna keep the wire nuts on all of the wire connections, make sure they are tight and taped. If not, butt connectors would be a great product to use.
my gosh yes, if anyone understands you do! You quite literally did everything were trying to do 😂 Thats a good tip, we bought some different more secure connectors, will definitely get them swapped out.
CONGRATULATIONS! Never believed it would look this good after the complete teardown. And it's roadworthy. Will be interesting to see how the vehicle handles and runs after you finish out the interior.
Aw thank you Uncle Brian! Honestly, we didn't think it would turn out this good either. 🤣 From what we remember it road smoother with a bit more weight in it.
Getting closer!!! Please tell me that you're going to paint the cool racing stripe back on.
WOo! We definitely will bring back some sort of tribute to the original stripe!
were you order door from?
We ordered it online through alibaba, only downside is it took several months to get cause the size was custom
Sorry I am late to the party on this one... life and stuff getting in the way, I will save you all the sad stuff. Anyway, my gosh this is really coming along and I was impressed with the time Joe took to cut the insulation out to fit so perfectly, that is awesome. This really is going to happen, wow! I have another video to catch up on after dinner, excited to see. Keep up the great work!
