An old dairy crane/ hand cranked winch finds new life helping remove a 215lb swage block from my trunk! This crane originally moved 30gal milk cans from a cooled cistern and into a wagon for transport to a cheese factory, cheese being Canada's second largest export behind lumber and wood products around the turn of the century.

i am so happy to see that you have that thing. i live in shelton, connecticut. there is a dam constructed in the 1870's for water power, making canal street the industrial capitol of the world. now, the space is being repurposed to residential. demolition of the factories is a result. during this some old turbines were discovered under the floor. i offered $1000.00 for one of these, but did not get it. this factory was a wire mill that made the wire for new haven telephone, which was the first telephone system in the world. sadly, this town is full of history, what it lacks is people who care. good luck, if i can be of help,, let it be known.

    • @castironmachines

Depends on the complexity, a proper setup should only need one pass, but if you want the backside or edges planed they need to be done separately ;)

I love the idea of restoring something like this but, while I have no doubt I could do it, it would be completely impractical for me to do so as the ones anywhere near me are much too large for my small garage. So I restored something a bit smaller...a 1950's DeWalt radial arm saw. :) Next will be a 1940's Delta drill press. The ceiling in my garage is about 6'10". I'm 6'8" and I barely fit in there unscathed myself, lol.

Very nice score, look forward to seeing it in use. The stuck taper may release more easily if the spindle is warmed up a bit by running or a bit of external heat. If the taper was installed warm and left to cool it can really stick in there.

Good to see a vintage machine being picked up by someone who loves the machine. This reminds me of a local Rough-and-Tumble organization in Kinzer, PA which has a line shaft driven machine shop which contains an F.E. Reed foot powered metal lathe. This would be a nice companion for the Hand Mill. Sad that you are in Canada. I have a GE 1/3HP 1910 - 1920 motor from perhaps a VERY old washing machine. The nameplate states "110V" which was the US voltage in the early 1900s. I am looking to find a home for this. Works well, runs quiet and smooth, just needs to be paired with a vintage machine. Dave.

Great demonstration. We'd like to see the other side in operation, where the slab is cut through also with the shingles falling off. Not OSHA approved but the shingles of cedar lasted decades, if you avoided the knots. I learned from Clay MacWhirter, who demonstrated the almost same saw (RustFest 2024 in Ottawa this weekend) the shingles with knots are used for siding only. Knots on the roof can leak water, creating rot.
